Jimmie Vaughan – Plays More Blues, Ballads And Favourites
*Digital download distributed by Proper*
For Jimmie Vaughan, too much of a good thing is a concept that simply doesn’t exist. The legendary Texan guitar dynamo was so pleased with the response to his 2010 album Blues, Ballads and Favorites that he decided to follow it up with a brand new collection he’s calling—what else?—More Blues, Ballads and Favorites! Packed with 16 covers of classic tunes that are close to his heart, the album—recorded, like the previous one, in his hometown of Austin, Texas—reunites Vaughan with the same cast of musicians that helped him out on the previous set. Also returning for round two, to assist with the vocals, is Lou Ann Barton, whose powerful pipes grace several tunes on the new release. “The first album was a success,” says Vaughan, “and what happened is I never really stopped. Even after I turned the first one in I was still recording. I’ve decided that, as long as I feel like it, I’m going to do that from now on.” Jimmie Vaughan—who first came to prominence as co-founder of the pioneering Texas blues-rock band the Fabulous Thunderbirds in the ’70s— has certainly earned the right to do whatever he wants whenever he wants to do it. Since he was a kid, Vaughan has dedicated his life to mastering his axe and reminding folks what American music is all about—music, he says, that need not be categorized. “When I talk about country and blues, they’re the same thing,” he says. “Muddy Waters and Hank Williams, Webb Pierce and Jimmy Reed. When I was a kid I didn’t understand the difference. Everybody was always asking me, ‘Why do you want to play blues? Why don’t you play country?’ But I would listen to the country guys and they would be doing a Jimmy Reed song. They’re playing the same lick. And Ray Charles, Little Milton, Guitar Junior, Lonnie Brooks, B.B. King—they all did country songs. Is Bob Wills country, blues or jazz? And the answer is, it’s American music. And if you don’t like it, kiss my ass! I’m tired of trying to pigeonhole everything. I want to bring it together; it comes from the same place.”

JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 25/07/2011 Sonny Clark - Sonny's Conception PROPERBOX161
*Digital download distributed by Proper* Sonny Clark’s soulful piano was a musical delight. His blues playing had a grace and weight unequalled in jazz before or since. Heroin and alcohol problems brought on a premature and tragic death at the age of 31. We follow Sonny’s path from early 1954 with early solo performances through to trio tunes from 1960. Along the way we hear Sonny collaborating with the likes of John Coltrane, Art Farmer, Donald Byrd, Max Roach and other leading lights. This 4 CD set comes with a booklet with Sonny’s story and discographical information. There is no other comparable survey of Sonny’s career in the marketplace. Full press and promotion accompanies this release. Sonny Clark was one of the leading pianists in what is commonly known as the hard bop style. Sonny Clark’s playing oozed a sense of effortless ease. Many pianists of the hard-bop era sound like they are trying hard to swing, not Sonny, as Art Farmer once commented, “A primary quality in Sonny Clark’s playing is that there is no strain in it”. Original melodies and variations on standards seemed to flow from his fingers. An essential element of Clark’s style was his use of stealthy melodic lines that could extend to several bars at the time and built through surprisingly accentuated melodic turns.

BLUES NEW RELEASE - 01/08/2011 Terry Hanck - Look Out DGPCD146
Terry Hanck was born in 1944 in Chicago, IL, but raised in the suburbs. After high school he began dividing his time between Chicago and California. A month before his 21st birthday Terry decided to take up the sax because as he puts it, “I needed another way not to make any money!” He made the permanent move to California in 1967 settling first in Orange County, but later relocated to San Francisco towards the end of ’69. His first band came together in Berkeley in 1970, the Grayson Street Houserockers, which for a brief time featured legendary Chicago blues guitarist Luther Tucker. Eventually, Terry’s soulful sax caught the incisive ears of renowned bandleader Elvin Bishop who personally asked him to join his band on two occasions – once in ‘72 and again in ’75 – before Terry finally accepted his third invitation in ‘77. Hanck toured with his band for 10 years and was even featured on Bishop’s classic album “Struttin’ My Stuff,” which included the chart-topping smash hit “Fooled Around And Fell In Love.” For his latest project “Look Out!,” Terry has assembled a tightly woven outfit featuring top tier talent from the West Coast including Ace guitarist Kid Andersen. Also highlighted is current guitarist Johnny Cat, who replaced Andersen back in 2004. Rounding out the rhythm section is drummer Butch Cousins, along with bassist Tim Wagar, replacing Terry’s longtime friend and bandmate Michael “Fly” Brooks who unfortunately passed away on September 20, 2010. At 66, Terry Hanck is singing better and playing better than he ever has. He’s delivered his strongest album yet - chock full of swinging grooves, inspired musicianship, as well as witty and insightful lyrics. It’s no wonder he’s been twice recognized in recent years with Blues Music Award nominations in 2009 and 2011. And with the muscle of a full-fledged record label now behind him for support, there’s no telling what the future may hold.

CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 25/07/2011 Alexander Balanescu & Ada Milea With The Balanescu Quartet – The Island S62610
Violinst Alexander Balanescu and singer Ada Milea both hail from Romania and are well known musicians in their own right and we are very pleased to present their new project. They transformed a surrealistic play by a Romanian author, based on the Robinson Crusoe story, into a surrealistic mini opera. The world famous Balanescu Quartet is the musical partner in this bizarre story. Is it classical music, jazz, world music or is it 'plain' avant garde? That is for the listener to judge. But if you indulge yourself in the story sung both by Alexander Balanescu (!) and Ada Milea, you will find yourself in an absurd world of pirates, grand parents and other colourful characters. Fact is this certainly isn't your everyday new release. The Balanescu Quartet and Alexander Balanescu are known worldwide for their co-operations with many artists, like David Byrne, Pet Shop Bos, Kate Bush and many others. Also their albums, including a cd with Kraftwerk covers for string quartet, received much appraisal. Ada Milea is a singer who experiments with the links between theater and music. She has released several albums in her home country.

Cathal Clohessy & Eamonn Costello – Bosca Ceoil & Fiddle COPP022
*Digital download distributed by Proper* This box and fiddle duo lay claim to regional styles stretching from north Connaught to west Limerick, but the most striking features of this fresh-faced collection are the idiosyncrasies of their musical personalities and the delicateness of their arrangements. froots magazine said; There's nothing quite like a fiddle/button accordion pairing to warm the cockles and the combination of Limerick's Cathal Clohessy and Connemara's Eamonn Costello (with occasional accompaniment from Rodney Lancashire on bouzouki and guitar) proves more than up to the task. Costello shows sensitivity lacked by many box merchants, exhibited to great effect on the reel Sean Ryan's, and in cahoots with Clohessy, an equal aficionado of the hidden note, produce music that both lifts the spirit and sets the toes tapping.
Tracks: The Strayaway Child / The Minstrel's Fancy; Claw's Hornpipe. / Sergent Early's Dream. FOLK NEW RELEASE - 01/08/2011 A. L. Lloyd – Bramble Briars & Beams Of The Sun FECD240
A handsomely packaged double CD for the price of one collection of traditional ballads sung by one of the leading exponents of the genre. A L Lloyd, along with Ewan MacColl,l was one of the architects of the UK Folk Revival in the 1950s. He was a writer, broadcaster, folk song collector, folklorist, artistic director of Topic Records and mentor to many aspiring folk musicians including Martin Carthy, The Watersons, Frankie Armstrong, Roy Harris and many others. He was also a noted performer in his own right. In the early 1950s he set about recording English versions of the great Folk Ballads to be found in Francis J Child’s five volume monumental work ‘English & Scottish Popular Ballads’. The result was a multi-LP set, but which was never released in the UK. The complete set of recordings is on the double CD collection. It is handsomely packaged with an extended booklet written by Dr Vic Gammon, former Director of the Folk Music Degree course at Newcastle University, which gives a fascinating insight to the ballads and Lloyd’s singing of them. Despite its seemingly scholarly approach Lloyd’s obvious enjoyment and the relish with which he sings these songs make it a highly listenable set. Disc 1: Scarborough Fair / The Outlandish Knight / Bold Sir Rylas / The Banks Of Green Willow / Lord Bateman / The Cherry-Tree Carol / Herod And The Cock / Dives And Lazarus / Lord Thomas And Fair Eleanor / Fair Margaret And Sweet William / The Unquiet Grave / George Collins / Long Lankin / The Prickly Bush / The Knight And She Shepherd's Daughter / Robin Hood And The Tanner / Robin Hood And The Bold Pedlar / Sir Hugh; Gypsies O / Geordie; Robin Hood And The Bishop Of Hereford / The Daemon Lover / The Lover's Ghost / Henry Martyn / The Devil And The Ploughman / The Golden Vanity / The Dover Sailor / The Bramble Briar / Six Dukes Went A-Fishing / The Shooting Of His Dear / The Bold Fisherman / The Bitter Withy / Down In Yon Forest
FOLK NEW RELEASE - 01/08/2011 Hedy West – Ballads & Songs Of The Appalachians FECD241
Cult American folk singer from the 1960s with a double CD of her three UK albums for the price of one Hedy West was among the best women singers of the American folksong revival. She came to prominence in the middle 1960s. Writers of the time hailed her as “among the most talented and accomplished of our young folk singers” and also commented “there are very few female singers in the English-speaking world who can equal Hedy West for general level of performance”. Although college educated she was in many ways the ‘real thing’ – she came from Georgia and much of her repertoire came from her family. For many she has never been equalled. She stayed in England for a few years, established herself of the European scene and recorded three LPs. All three are contained here. She sings accompanied by her 5-string banjo. From classic ‘big’ ballads like ‘Little Matty Groves’ to lightweight ditties she displays consummate skill. JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 25/07/2011 Aquarium - Aquarium BDV1195
The self-titled debut release from London Jazz ensemble Aquarium, led by pianist and composer Sam Leak. Sam Leak-piano,composer / James Allsopp-tenor sax, bass clarinet / Calum Gourlay-double bass / Joshua Blackmore-drums "Sam Leak is one of the brightest young stars in the jazz piano galaxy, a heavenly improviser and a brilliant prospect for the future." Helen Mayhew - JazzFM “Aquarium is a mature and often sumptuous statement of intent” Daniel Spicer - Jazzwise "A set of absorbing compositions from Sam Leak. Excellent playing and interaction in the band with intelligent use of space, colour and dynamics. A fine achievement." John Taylor “Like his fellow Royal Academy of Music alumni Gwilym Simcock, Ivo Neame and Kit Downes, Leak is a thoughtful and resourceful young pianist with a wonderful touch and a very sensitive ear to the overall ensemble sound. What is striking on a first listen to his new material is how he patiently develops his lines and uses space masterfully… This is another great young talent who looks more than capable of helping to keep the Brit Jazz flag proudly flying well into 2011 and beyond.” - Thomas Gray, London Jazz Blog "a commitment to lyricism and detail of inflection distinguish the playing of these musicians. Allowing melody to guide both the improvisations and compositions gives this music a nostalgic quality, yet it feels very much of our time in the breadth of its influences." Liam Noble "Sam's music brings together all that is right about not just contemporary jazz but also new music; the music feels loose and open at times and tight knitted and calculated at others. It marries an open soulfulness with the complexities of rhythm and harmony without a hint of pretension" Rory Simmons "This is a strong & melodic debut by this fine group of young musicians. Influences are apparent, but they have a real ensemble sound and the set is well paced with a feeling of intimate listening going on. A band to look out for on the live circuit!" Phil Robson "I love Sam's writing on this album - the tunes sound really unique, intricate but really memorable. The band playing together also sound like a real unit, like everyone is seeing the tunes from the same angle. I really enjoy hearing bands like this, as this is when the compositions really come to life I think - and in Sam's album this happens. Supporting Sam are three of my favourite musicians, their playing combined with great melodies and textures makes for a really enjoyable record." Kit Downes

JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 01/08/2011 G.F. Fitz-Gerald & Lol Coxhill – The Poppy Seed Affair RR0212223
Rare Private Performance Art Film featuring Ian Hinchcliffe. With funny music by Lol Coxhill, Archie Leggett & Robert Wyatt. Electric guitar radical G.F. Fitz-Gerald and soprano saxophone subversive Lol Coxhill; dual masters of spontaneous art and intuitive music, unleash The Poppy Seed Affair a three disc collection for your edification and confoundment. The Poppy Seed Affair film was produced in 1981 by London’s anarch-oholic troupe, The Matchbox Purveyors; Ian Hinchcliffe, Jeff Nuttall, Mark Long, G.F. Fitz-Gerald, Lol Coxhill & Foxy. Inimitable soundtrack by Lol Coxhill, sometimes in trio with drummer Robert Wyatt and bassist Archie Leggett. Now rescued from utter obscurity to DVD (NTSC all region), this comedic tour-de-farce juggles the insane, the inane with a twist of the profane. Complementing this complete experience are two extraordinary compact discs mastered directly from true-to-life tape recordings out of the G.F. Fitz-Gerald archive. Compact Disc One is an intimate, close-mic concert recording of Fitz-Gerald & Coxhill at Newcastle’s Spectro Arts Workshop, 1981. Here the duo’s mercurial genius for spatial Sonics is fully displayed. Compact Disc Two collects several works for tape, beginning with Listen Collage, which reconstructs, à la Faust Tapes, random room sounds of bizarre hippie domesticity, bedroom radios, tape recorders and ambient street sounds from London’s Ladbrooke Grove during the spring of 1969. Unmistakably this is a prodigious twenty minute audio adventure unique to its epoch. Following Listen Collage are two extended works for and prepared guitars and sundry effects, leading to the sampled tape loop trip Band In My Head. And lastly, a tape collage for The Matchbox Purveyors’ stage show, The Team. This entire disc transforms the magic of the creative moment into deeply experiential realms for our minds eye. Furthermore, in refusing to impose any impure digital processing whatsoever, these analogue recordings remain en vérité. Few guitarists have so audaciously scaled the sonic heights G.F. Fitz-Gerald has, no other saxophonist sounds as Lol Coxhill does, and Reel Recordings proudly presents a profusion of their unadulterated artistry throughout this rare archival collection. The Poppy Seed Affair is delivered as a numbered limited edition of 500 copies. Warning: May induce hilarity and confused thinking!

POP NEW RELEASE - 25/07/2011 Roberto Blanco & Orquesta Termidor Cuba – Du Lebst Besser Wenn Du Lachst 598912
Listen first – then form an opinion. That is how it should really be with new albums. You could say: listen first – then ask the name. But that is hardly necessary if you live in Germany: the moment you first hear the voice, you know who the singer is. Yet on Du lebst besser wenn du lachst (You live better when you laugh), this famous voice does the most unexpected things. And yet Roberto Blanco is not an artist to deny what has made him famous: he is accosted almost every day on the street about it and he is grateful for it and honest about it. But he is more than just his singing voice. “I am an entertainer,” said Roberto Blanco. “I can do much more than just sing pop songs, and I’m going to prove it with my new album.” No sooner said than done. And very impressively, too.

ROCK NEW RELEASE - 25/07/2011 Bubble Puppy - A Gathering Of Promises SNAM953CD
THE RARE 1969 PSYCH CLASSIC INCLUDING 8 BONUS TRACKS International Artists Records produced some of the most innovative records to come out of Texas’s thriving rock scene of the late Sixties. One of the most influential independent record companies of its day, it has gained cult status over the years amongst fans of prime American psychedelic and garage rock. The Bubble Puppy were International Artists' second biggest act in terms of chart action after The 13th Floor Elevators and enjoyed a degree of commercial success with their distinct highenergy, hippy rock-pop sound and look. Formed in San Antonio in 1967, their first 45 waxing, the brilliant Hendrix-inspired ‘Hot Smoke & Sassafras’, combined hard rock with fresh vocal harmonies and reached #14 in the U.S. charts in March 1969. The resultant album from that year, ‘A Gathering Of Promises’, featured more of the same raw, garage-psych sound and was equally strong. Somewhat removed from the deep acid psych of the Elevator’s Easter Everywhere or The Golden Dawn’s ‘Power Plant IA albums’, it is highly enjoyable album and stands as one of the label’s most refined rock efforts. This edition of the album includes both sides of the group’s four singles as bonus tracks, four of which were not on the original album, whilst two of the other sides were different mixes to the album versions. The accompanying 16-page illustrated booklet features unique quotes about the band, the music and the times from original band member David Fore, who was specially interviewed for this release.

Various Artists - Luso Noir CDPIR2441
“On Luso Noir, eleven major voices from Angola, Cape Verde and Mozambique sing praises to various forms of the Saudade, a poignant musical expression of weltschmerz inherited from the Portugese conquistadors. Sadness, longing, gentle melancholy – none of these translations can quite capture the full depth of Saudade's emotional pull.” The Portugese empire ruled its African possessions for 500 years, dissolving in 1975 after a series of bloody revolutions. The Saudade remained, not only as a musical genre but as as an approach to life, a unifying cultural legacy which has not only survived, but thrived. Even the word itself: “Saudade” was selected by a German jury to be one of the ten most beautiful words in the world. The fall of Portugal's once great realm is rendered literarily comprehensible through the transcendental novels of Portuguese author António Lobo Antunes. The post-independence, African perspective is presented musically by the singers on this compilation. Luso Noir's curator is the acclaimed Berlin-based, Bahian-born Djane Grace Kelly www.djgracekelly.com
