18 original recordings presenting a unique collaboration between Berlin's reknown electro artists Gebrüder Teichmann, Modeselektor, Jahcooziand Nairobi's finest musicians. Presenting some of Kenya's most wanted rappers and Kenyan bands: Ukoo F Welcome to the madhouse! In early 2009, three bands from the world-reknown Berlin electronic music scene set out to a journey, their destination:Nairobi, Kenya, in East Africa. The idea 'Berlin meets Nairobi', brainchild of Goethe-Institut Nairobi and electronic music duo Gebrüder Teichmann, was as simple as it was complex at the same time. Berlin musicians would come to this vibrant East African metropolis and meet, mix and mingle with artists from the local music scene. The name of the project became NRBLN-BLNRB, a fusion of the colloquial abbreviations of the two cities involved. From Berlin, there were Modeselektor, the hyperactive breakbeat-duo, curious electronic producers Gebrüder Teichmann and Jahcoozi, the multicultural star trio composed of Dubstep, Grime Rave and hyper-sonic Electronica. From Kenya, rappers like Mister Abbas, Kimya and Lon´Jon or the first lady of Kenyan rap, Nazizi, became part of the joint collaboration. The electropop band Just A Band and blind singer/guitarist Michel Ongaru also contributed their flavors. In addition, six members of the HipHop collective Ukoo Flani from the coastal city of Mombasa were a key part of the body of MCs who would turn up every day and night. Two studios were established in a townhouse in Nairobi, where everyone in the project worked, performed and lived together. The above-mentioned bands were invited but word spread like fire within Nairobi's music scene. Quickly there was a frenzy of artists coming and going, the now infamous Madhouse was born. After a first concert in Nairobi in 2009, the Berliners went back to Kenya in spring 2010 for a few weeks, and it was during this period, that the first recordings of the presented tracks were made. In December 2010, the musicians from Nairobi came to Berlin for a concert night that celebrated the collaboration. The release concert for a BLNRB EP was held during Worldtronics Festival in Berlin with great success. "BLNRB – Welcome to the Madhouse" features 18 original recordings – as diverse as the more than 20 artists involved. The international Electro clubmusic scene has become all about the latest styles and sounds treated with the newest digital technology, ingredients that are still hard to find in Africa. This album bridges this gap and opens a path into a new global clubsound. BLNRB is about digging deep into the local Berlin and Nairobi music scenes and building a new urban sound together with some amazing talents from the next generation of African musicians. "I remember listening to these beats for the first time, liking them, I could listen, but I didn't think I could ever rap to it. Now I'm proud of it. I love what Teichmann brothers did and the amazing experience working with Modeselektor and Jahcoozi. Soon we will have our own BLNRB sound. I think it's gonna be the beginning of greater things, we gonna start a revolution!" After getting rave reviews for his debut album New York Town, Israel Nash Grikpa's sophomore album Barn Doors and Concrete Floors set the Americana scene in Europe on fire. But not nearly as much as his exciting live shows with New York punk rockers the Fieros by his side would heat up European stages. Both at festivals and smaller venues his energetic shows evoked comparisons to the likes of John Fogerty, Neil Young or even 70's Rolling Stones. This set captures Israel and his band at their best on tour in Holland early 2011. Playing and singing songs mostly from Barn Doors and Concrete Floors but sending the crowd home with an almost devastating version of Neil Young's Revolution Blues. BLUES

“I don‘t play a lot of fancy guitar, because I don‘t want to play it“, John Lee Hooker once said in an interview. „The kind of guitar I want to play is mean, mean licks“. The man they eventually nicknamed “The Hook” was born near Clarksdale, Mississippi, on August 22nd 1917. He sang Gospel as a kid, as his father was not only a sharecropper but also a Baptist preacher. When his parents separated in the early Twenties, he eventually learned to play the guitar and sing the Blues from his stepfather, the blues-player William Moore who often had friends over to play. And what friends they were: well-traveled, experienced and supremely talented musicians like Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, or Blind Blake. When he was fifteen years old John Lee left Clarksdale for Memphis, and later tried his luck on the Blues-scene in Cincinnati for a while, before settling in the motor-city of Detroit in the late Forties. At this point, he had been playing his mean, gritty guitar licks, singing with that deep, thunderous rumble of a voice and stomping his foot in rhythm a good while already. But he was thirty-one years old when finally somebody brought him to a recording studio to record originals like “Sally Mae” and “Boogie Chillen”. Hooker instantly became known as the “Boogie Man” from coast to coast, scoring in 1949 with “Crawlin’ King Snake”, for instance, and in 1951 with the multi-tracked “I’m In The Mood”. It was songs like these, with their simple, yet contagious Boogie-grooves and their talking blues vocals, which influenced British-Blues-Rockers like The Animals or the Yardbirds in the Sixties. As soon as John Lee Hooker became known, his legacy just kept on growing – through a cameo-role in “The Blues Brothers” and his comeback-album “The Healer” in 1989, which featured guest appearances by Carlos Santana, Robert Cray and Bonnie Raitt. But even when playing in front of a Pop-audience (or with some of his more popular admirers), John Lee Hooker stayed true to his mumblin’ vocals and his eerie guitar-sounds. “The Hook” was as real as can be, all the way up to his death in June 2001.

BLUES

Growing up in Alabama, Indiana and Texas, Billy C. Farlow drew his inspiration from both black and white musicians. In his early teens he learned the guitar and harmonica. He wasn't satisfied with simply mastering renditions of the classics. His musical ear and attraction to poetry combined to form original blues, gospel, and rock 'n' roll tunes. Regardless of where Billy C. Farlow's travels take him, the rhythm and blues of his deep Southern roots stay firmly imbedded in his soul. On "Alabama Swamp Stomp", his CrossCut Records debut, he's joined by his friends from Mercy, a blues/roots trio from the South of France. The band's mastermind, J.P. Avellaneda, has produced the album, co-written a couple of tunes, and recorded the studio session. With its tight ensemble play, a steady groove and beat, the band's supplying the perfect, greasy soil for Billy C.'s swamp-drenched blues and r&b.

BLUES

Josh Smith was born in 1979 in Middletown, Connecticut, and raised in Florida. As a teenager he released two self-produced blues CDs and was sitting in with blues greats at established professional blues jams in South Florida. After graduation from high school in 1997 he went on his first national tour ensued with his newly formed power trio, Josh Smith and the Frost. Later that year, Jim Gaines, whose credits include Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Luther Allison, and many others, produced his third album. In 2011, Josh will support his internationally distributed CD, "I'm Gonna Be Ready" with his first European tour under his own name. "I'm Gonna Be Ready", a more traditional blues CD, is not just a showcase for Josh Smith, the 31-year-old guitar master. Smith, a sophisticated stylist, leaves plenty of room for piano and organ. But he's not a traditionalist, or revivalist. He loves to play, and it shows. You may hear nods to the Vaughan Brothers, Stevie Ray and Jimmy, and their special Texas blues brew. There are soulful moments of deep intensity, slow blues, tastefully arranged with horns in the background. Stax-tinged soul comes with "You And Me", or "Already Found". "Dead Wrong" shows his deep sense for funky blues. You may hear Albert Collins, and B.B. King in his playing, too. In 1998, Josh was asked to support B.B. King on a number of theatre dates. Josh Smith wrote all the songs for "I'm Gonna Be Ready". No fillers. On his latest release, Josh is supported by some of the finest players in Los Angeles. Kirk Fletcher, his buddy, has worked with Kim Wilson in the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Jeff Young on organ has worked with Jackson Browne, and Steely Dan, to name a few. And drummer James Gadson is one of the best in the country Includes 4 track bonus CD

This historic complete recording of Verdi’s opera La forza del destino was made in 1955 and boasts an outstanding ensemble of singers; the central figure in Verdi’s“sung drama” is Leonora, performed on this recording by the superb Renata Tebaldi. Giulietta Simionato is equally flawless in the role of Preziosilla – she was at the height of her fame and vocal powers when this recording was made. Ettore Bastiani is just as convincing in the role of Don Carlo and del Monaco’s Alvaro is considered one of his most differentiated role creations. Cesare Siepi produces a brilliant performance of Padre Guardiano and Fernando Corena’s Melitone is one of his best performances to be captured on vinyl. Verdi’s work is performed by the Orchestra e Coro dell‘Accademia di Santa Cecilia (Rome) and conducted by Francesco Molinari-Pradelli. The title says it all: each and every song on this FabFour boxed set was a success story in its own right and has remained so to this very day. Although René Kollo went on to enjoy world fame as a Wagner tenor he still remained faithful to the traditional pathtrodden by his father Willi and grandfather Walter before him – and he embraced the world of light entertainment with open arms, singing everything from operettas and folk songs to popular hits. Which explains why the compositions featured on this compilation – almost eighty in number – are written by a wide variety of composers, ranging from Udo Jürgens to Johann Strauss. *Digital download distributed by Proper* This album of Brigitte’s songs was co-produced by Brigitte and Brady Blade (Emmylou’s Spyboy) with the help of musicians Will Kimbrough and Doug Lancio on guitar, Sam Bush on mandolin and fiddle and Mike Farris helping on vocals. Artists live for those rare moments when everything lines up; when they gather the right songs and the right people in the right place at the right time, and find themselves and their music truly coming alive. Brigitte DeMeyer is experiencing just such a moment. Rose of Jericho is proof. Although this is album number five for DeMeyer, it also marks a trio of significant firsts: her first time taking the reigns as co-producer; her first time recording in Nashville since she made it her home; and her first time telling her stories of balancing motherhood and music. She’d built a solid foundation with her first four albums, collaborating with giants of the Americana world—worldclass drummer and producer Brady Blade especially—and showing herself to have a wonderfully natural feel for country-steeped, blues-infused roots-pop, right down to her supple, peppery singing. On the new album, DeMeyer expanded her impressive stable of collaborators with contributions from full-throated force of nature Mike Farris, guitar gurus Will Kimbrough and Doug Lancio and virtuoso Sam Bush. DeMeyer is planning a fall European tour following the summer release of Rose of Jericho. She’ll be accompanied by her all star band with Blade on drums, Kimbrough on guitar and Chris Donohue on bass. Boston based Girls Guns and Glory explores a variety of sonic directions under the guise of Americana and Roots Rock. The band gained notoriety with a 2007 Boston Music Award for "Outstanding Americana Act of The Year", a national television commercial for Radio Shack, nationwide radio play and numerous press articles. 2008 kicked off reaching the top 10 on the Americana chart. GGG wrapped up the year by winning 2 of their 3 Boston Music Award nominations. Since then the band has showcased twice at the national Americana Music Conference and SXSW Music Festival where Country Standard Time labeled them the buzz band of the conference. Paul Q. Koldarie (Radiohead, Uncle Tupelo, Lemonheads) and Adam Taylor (Sarah Borges, Portugal the Man) produced 'Sweet Nothings' as a rebirth of sorts. For Ward, it is a reconnection to the roots of rock 'n' roll for which he exhumed influences of the past including Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly and Little Richard. The album, which has songs both quick and catchy about the simple pleasures of life and slow and sentimental about.. what else?... getting your heart ripped out, chewed up, spit out and put back together is a masterful follow-up to the bands earlier efforts. According to front man Ward Haydon, the band has just begun to scratch the surface of what they can do with their 4th full length release 'Sweet Nothings'. Chris Hersch stretches out on baritone guitar and fender six, Michael Calabrese contributes harmony vocals and a myriad of percussive instrumentation, and Paul Dilley rocks the mellotron. CONTINENTAL SONG CITY

COUNTRY

Barn Doors and Concrete Floors was recorded in an old hay barn in the Catskill Mountains. The record features Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), Joey McClellan (Midlake/The Fieros), Eric Swanson, Aaron McClellan (The Fieros), Brendon Anthony, Jason Crosby, and Rich Hinman. The album was humbly engineered by the one and only Ted Young (Gaslight Anthem/Kurt Vile). The new album is a real story about music and friends that went through transformations and trials throughout. It was October 2009 and I had just gotten back from a European tour for New York Town. The engineer on Barn Doors, Mr. Ted Young, came over to my house for a couple of drinks and to listen to some vinyl records I had just bought. It was then that I verbalized the idea I had about recording in some old barn in the middle of the Catskills. I don’t know if it was the beer or the vision itself, but either way, Ted agreed that it was indeed a good idea. Oh, and we also knew that we wanted Steve on the project. I really liked his work on some other records and thought he would be a great addition. Ted and I were going to split the last beer of the evening, but when I tried to open it the tab broke off, preventing it from touching our lips. We decided that was some auspicious sign so I placed the unopened Budweiser in a cabinet and told Ted we would save it as a celebratory drink when we finished tracking the record. The next day, I realized that there was no backing out on this and that we had made a commitment to do this thing. We got into contact with Steve and he agreed to be a part of the record. We also tracked down the barn from an ad on Craigslist. It really was the first and only property we were interested in. We spent months drawing diagrams and trying to call in any favors to get appropriate gear to transform this barn into a working studio. We had some definite road blocks along the way, but got to Harvard Farm in the Catskill Mountains on June 23rd, 2010. Everything worked. We recorded with the barn doors wide open every day. We recorded tracks outside. We went swimming in the river. We built bonfires. And we made a record. Tracks: Fool's Gold / Drown / Sunset, Regret / Goodbeye Ghost / Four Winds / Louisana / Baltimore / Red Dress / Black And Blue / Bellwether Ballad / Antebellum

*Digital download distributed by Proper* Be prepared to be enchanted by rich harmonies and sumptuous clashes as Lady Maisery emerge as one of the most original new groups on the UK folk scene this year. Lady Maisery is a new vocal trio from Hannah James (Kerfuffle, Hannah James and Sam Sweeney, Demon Barbers), Hazel Askew (The Askew Sisters) and Rowan Rheingans (Fidola.) Inspired by folk singing traditions of the UK and northern Europe, Lady Maisery sing songs and ballads both unaccompanied, and with backing from their combined instrumental talents on accordion, harp and fiddle. Their debut album, Weave and Spin, was recorded one frosty week in February and introduces these three musicians; three voices woven together in a timeless combination, which they push to new levels. It features a captivating collection of songs, carefully chosen and arranged to showcase the vocal quality of the group. Expect spellbinding harmonies on unaccompanied tracks such as the plaintive Kipling/Bellamy classic My Boy Jack, the music-hall charms of Mary Ann, and the beautiful simplicity of three voices on Sleep on Beloved. Lady Maisery also explore new ground as one of the first UK groups to revive the tradition of diddling or singing tunes, which has nearly died out in England, but is still prevalent in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. The combined influence of these traditions can be seen in sets such as the toe-tapping European dance tunes Labajalg/Polska, as well as a fun rendition of the classic Primrose and Bluebell Polkas. While still in the Navy in 1957, Cyril performed on an Alan Lomax radio show broadcast on Christmas Day, "Sing Christmas and the Turn of the Year." Shortly thereafter on Easter Sunday, he appeared on television. It went well, and soon he had a weekly television spot and a networked show "Watch Aboard." He left the Navy early in 1959 to become a full-time professional musician and broadcaster and earned his living in this way for 44 years, making him Britain's longeststanding professional folksinger. 'Childrenr019s Songs From Devon and Cornwal'l was recorded in July 1969 and released later that year. On this record he tried to give a selection of songs, as they were originally sung in Devon and Cornwall. Very little has been made available on CD except for the odd compilation here and there. An ensemble of Highland pipes established with one thing in mind – to play in a rhythmic, communicative and exciting way. The music is alive and vital, communicating the whole gamut of emotions. The dance music is closely related to its old natural percussive rhythms and the piobaireachd follows the forms of the original song versions from which they originated. Seudan is pronounced Shaytan, which is Gaelic for jewels or treasures. The pipes played are matched copies of a very important museum set made in 1785 and housed in The Inverness Museum. They have been meticulously measured and reproduced and play in concert pitch A 440 Hz. They are made in ebony and mounted in solid silver, by Hamish and Fin Moore. The pipers are Calum MacCrimmon, Angus MacKenzie, Fin Moore and Angus Nicolson, with Allan MacDonald (vocals and small pipes). They are joined on the album by Mac Morin (piano and steps), Donald Hay (percussion), Ross Martin (guitar) and Kathleen MacInnes (vocals). You only have to take a look at the calibre of musicians collaborating together in this Seudan album to know that you will be enthralled, entertained and moved by the music. Seudan take a free spirited approach to their music, harnessing the best of Hebridean and Cape Breton influences and the outcome as you would expect is as fresh as a gust of wind on a Uist croft! This first ever recorded collaboration between saxophonist Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band) and percussionist Jeff Sipe (Aquarium Rescue Unit) brings together to long-time veterans of the Jazz / Jamband world. 'Duet', from Dave Matthews Band/Bela Fleck and the Flecktones saxophonist Jeff Coffin, and Leftover Salmon/Aquarium Rescue Unit drummer Jeff Sipe, is an extension of these stories and conversations. “Sipe and I have been playing music and touring together for many years in various incarnations of my group and his trio, playing in jam sessions at festivals, as well as talking about music, swapping stories, hanging out at each others homes, and becoming lifelong friends along the way. We share similar views about music and creating, and of allowing the spirit of what we do overtake us and be led by it. For this project, we decided to ‘just play’, record everything, and see what came out the other side of the rabbit hole. No expectations.” The duo recorded in Brevard, NC at the Brevard Music Center, for nearly three days. They brought in horns, drums, gongs, bells, flutes and whistles, and though they had a few sketches of tunes they worked from, the goal was not to let those ideas be the focus, but rather to have the tunes spring forth from the improvisations.

JAZZ

“It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing”, may be one of Duke Ellington’s most popular mottos in song, but the man born on April 29, 1899, in Washington, D.C., surpassed this dictum. “In the century since his birth, there has been no greater composer, American or otherwise, than Edward Kennedy Ellington,” wrote the journalist Bob Blumenthal, encompassing “Duke’s” over a thousand compositions worth of Blues, popular songs, religious and classical suites, film-scores, ballet-music, and Jazz tunes, of course, but still omitting his seminal accomplishments as a pianist and band-leader. Duke Ellington was an American icon, if ever there was one, a charismatic and charming, hip and sophisticated human being, who preferred the name “American music” to jazz, and confessed in the title of his autobiography: “Music is my mistress.” Having been called Duke by his friends even before teen-age on account of his elegant, graceful and noble manner, his main interests as a youngster were baseball and art. Still, as the son of piano-playing parents, he learned to play the instrument from age 7, and began studying stridepianists, even writing his first composition at the age of 15. He was just 18 years old, when heturned down an art scholarship and left school just three months short of graduating, in order to begin his musical career. When a member of his successful band left for a more prestigious engagement, Duke fatefully decided to move from D.C. to Harlem, in the Twenties, where he soon became an active and important part of the “Harlem Renaissance.” From the moment Duke and his orchestra debuted at the Cotton Club in 1927 all through the 40s, where he befriended his “writing and arranging companion” Billy Strayhorn, on to his “comeback” at Newport in the mid50s, even in the differently swingin’ 60s, and all the way up until his death on May 24, 1974, Duke Ellington continued to invent and inspire, surprise and surpass everything musically imaginable. Perfecting his ingenious way of composing with individual band-members in mind – always the best musicians available, from Johnny Hodges or Ben Webster to Paul Gonsalves – and branching out stylistically and globally, the Duke elevated the popular perception of Jazz to a respected and “serious” art form. He truly was musical royalty.

Born on March 27th 1924 in Newark, New Jersey, and christened Sarah Lois Vaughan, the woman eventually known as “Sassy” or “The Divine One” began taking piano lessons at seven. Her parents were deeply religious, and encouraged their only daughter to sing and play at their local New Mount Zion Church. Fortunately for the jazz-world, little Sarah developed a fondness for popular music and eventually dropped out of High School during her junior year to concentrate on her music. After winning the Amateur Night at the Apollo Theatre at the age of eighteen she had an engagement with Earl Hines’ band, as well as a host of club-engagements and recordings, always with the brightest and best players around. Finally, in 1947, Sarah Vaughan won the New Star Award of Esquire magazine, as well as Downbeat magazine’s critic’s poll as “best singer” Witnessing her effortless and playful vocal ways with the new music called bebop, it is obvious why most critics and listeners praised and adored “Sassy”. After leaving Columbia in 1953, Vaughan signed with Mercury Records – recording the more jazzy sides for their subsidiary EmArcy in the mid to late Fifties. During this time she arguably made some of the most beautiful and important recordings of her career, mostly in her loose, relaxed, and supremely sensual style. By now firmly established as a Jazz-icon, her personal- and businesssituation were far from perfect, with the “mercurially temperamental” Vaughan getting divorced three times, running into trouble with the IRS, and often changing record labels. She did however keep making wonderful music for all these different companies, recording everything from Jazz to Pop, from Brazilian music via the poems of Pope John Paul II to the Beatles’ songbook until well into the Eighties. With her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and after her induction into the American Jazz Hall of Fame, Sarah Vaughan died of lung cancer at her home in California on April 3rd 1990, just a week after her 66th birthday.

Even though Jimmy Smith used both hands and even his feet when playing his mighty Hammond B3 organ, he single-handedly put the instrument on the Jazz-map. Born on December 8th 1925 (or 1928, as he later claimed) in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and christened James Oscar Smith, he took what little influence there was to get on the organ from Fats Waller or Wild Bill Davis and transformed the unwieldy “monster” into a swinging attraction. With a solid background in boogie-woogie piano, which even won him a radio-contest at the age of nine, and a sophisticated music education courtesy of the Royal Hamilton College of Music and the Leo Ornstein School of Music in Philadelphia, Jimmy purchased his first Hammond-organ in 1953 and rented a warehouse to practice in. A year or so later, he emerged onto the scene as “The Incredible”: a new musical phenomenon, which everyone wanted to hear and see. When Alfred Lion of Blue Note records witnessed Smith at a club in Philadelphia in 1956, the legendary producer immediately signed him – a business relationship that lasted for a mere eight years, but produced some forty albums under Smith’s name. “The Champ”, as Jimmy Smith was also known, mostly recorded in trio-formats with a guitarist and a drummer, but also liked to play with other “funky” Jazz-stars of the time such as Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, Grant Green, or Stanley Turrentine. His worldwide popularity and the incredible album-sales allowed him to open up his own club in California in the Seventies, where he regularly appeared in his preferred trio-setting. After a triumphant “comeback” onto the recording-scene in the Eighties, Jimmy Smith was often asked to record with other stars like Quincy Jones and Frank Sinatra, B.B. King, Etta James, and even Michael Jackson. His influence on other organ-players is immeasurable – there was and is not a single organ-player who did not learn a thing or two from Jimmy Smith. Having been named a “NEA Jazz Master”, the highest honor available to a Jazz-musician in the US, he died on February 8th 2005.

JAZZ

“The best thing to happen to the guitar since Charlie Christian”, as the critic Ralph J. Gleason lauded him, John Leslie “Wes” Montgomery was born Indianapolis, Indiana, on March 6th 1923. Coming from a musical family, he was given a 4-string guitar by his older (bass-playing) brother Monk at the age of twelve. Even though he picked up the basic skills on the instrument and developed a great ear early on, it was not until Wes was 19 years old that he started playing the instrument in earnest. Inspired by Charlie Christian, he began copying the solos and licks of the great Swing-guitarist on a 6-string, soon developing such a versatile and virtuoso technique, that the great band-leader Lionel Hampton hired him in 1948 – at first, simply to play those copied Christian-solos. Because of the stress and the insecure financial situations of life on the road, Wes quit this band after a few years and went home to Indianapolis, where he worked in a factory during the day and played music at night, in order to support his family of eight. On the side, he often supported his brothers in the band “The Mastersounds”, occasionally even recording with Monk on bass and Buddy on vibes and/or piano. After Cannonball Adderley heard Wes in a local club in Indiana, he was so impressed by Wes’ highly original, yet soulful and swinging style, the chords that come straight from Christian and Django Reinhardt and the fiery single notes on top, that he immediately contacted producer Orrin Keepnews, who signed Wes Montgomery to a recording contract. After the first Trio recording with Melvin Rhyne and Paul Parker (and after turning down an invitation to join John Coltrane’s band), came a steady stream of albums as a leader, as well as recordings with the bands of Cannonball Adderley, Jimmy Smith and Harold Land. Wes Montgomery recorded prolifically during the Sixties, all the way up to his early death from a heart attack at the age of 45. He remains one of the most significant guitarists to this day, with everyone from Jimi Hendrix or George Benson to Pat Metheny acknowledging his influence on their playing.

CELILO

ROCK

*Digital download distributed by Proper* Celilo, the acclaimed Indie/Psych/Atmospheric Folk band from Portland, Oregon will release their new full-length Buoy Bell in August, 2011, the follow-up to 2009's Bending Mirrors (which Uncut Magazine proclaimed "evokes the sleepy languor and unhurried warmth of Harvest era Neil Young"). Buoy Bell is dedicated to the memory of their late drummer and brother in music Kipp Crawford. They began recording the album in the summer of 2009 starting with the song "Axis" (which features the incomparable Crawford on drums.) Following his death the band took a break to regroup. Two months later they reemerged with Matt Cadenelli on drums and continued work on Buoy Bell. Though half the record was written before Crawford passed, the entire album is infused with his spirit. Straddling the boundaries between indie rock, disco surf, psychedelia, and atmospheric folk, on Buoy Bell Celilo moves beyond the rain soaked boot gazing of Bending Mirrors. Although their sound shows flashes of British psychedelia and at times evokes the burgeoning “New Folk” of the Pacific Northwest, Celilo have developed something unique: mud splattered alchemy, a hushed radiator glow with Steinbeckian lyrical observation, and burnt molasses vocals set to the beautiful and tragic sleeplessness of indie city skylines. A direct result of front man Martin's newfound comfort level as a songwriter and a front man, his voice has come full circle and instantly defines the band's songs. Full of laments, heartache, optimism, and reverberance, Buoy Bell delivers sweeping imagery and soul-searching fragility, and counterbalanced by vibrant, lush, and oft-daunting musical composition that challenges both the band and the listener to pick up every nuance. As diverse as it is cohesive, the album plays through like a late-night soundtrack to a never to be forgotten conversation with a friend. Buoy Bell was recorded with producers Jordan Leff at Secret Society, Gregg Williams (Blitzen Trapper, Dandy Warhols, Snow Patrol) at the Trench, and Dylan Magierek (Starfucker, Builders and Butchers, Mark Kozelek) at Type Foundry. Additional tracking was done at Martin’s home studio - and as in the case with "Old Loves," around one mike and a bottle of wine at the dining room table. Confirmed reviews in Uncut and R2 Advertising in and Word Tracks: Sunken Ships / All Day Long / Baroque Blues / Street Sweeper Suite / Axis / Coho / Four Fields Up / Eerie Languor/American Wasteland / Old Loves / Buoy Bell

ANGEL AIR

ROCK

Greenslade are much loved (and missed) progressive band who in 2012 will celebrate their 40 year formation with possibly a return to live performances. The band made its live debut at The Marquee, London in late 1972. Dave Greenslade and Tony Reeves had been original members of Colosseum. They were joined by Dave Lawson who had been in the Alan Brown Set and Andrew McCulloch from King Crimson. To remind us what a great live band they were we release the only available live performances from the classic years of 1973 to 1975. The first 4 tracks of this live album were recorded just after the release of “Greenslade” and the 1975 tracks were recorded after the band’s 3rd album “Spyglass Guest” and the two versions of “Sundance” bear witness to the changes as the band had gained experience and strength touring (the first version contains the original concept however). ANGEL AIR

ROCK

Rococo were one of the most exciting rock bands performing in London in the 70’s and were usually categorised-as everything had to be in those days-as a progressive rock group, a genre well represented on “The Firestorm And Other Love Songs”, the second album from Angel Air Records which was recorded in the period 1973 to 1978. Released a year after their debut album, the critically acclaimed “Run For The Wildfire” (SJPCD337), the second collection also features the band’s lighter side, further revealing the diversity and range of styles and the ability to switch from one to another with ease, that made it difficult for record labels to figure them out. The band, featuring Roy Shipston, Ian Raines, Rod Halling, Clive Edwards and John “Rhino” Edwards, had three singles released in that era but no LPs, although they recorded more than enough material for two albums. They had singles “Wildfire” and “Ultrastar” out on Decca’s “progressive” Deram label and “Follow That Car” on Mountain Records, but both declined to take up options because the follow-up “45s” the band presented were too much of a contrast to the original songs. Even before their second single release in 1976, Rococo were frequently referred to as “the best unsigned band in London”. Now, with today’s de-classifications and mish-mash of music styles, at least one record company understands what Rococo were about. Fans of rock and pop music that saw them then-and those who have heard the band since-always did. Old Songs, New Songs was originally released in 1971 to promote an American tour (which was actually cancelled). The release collected singles and b-sides alongside re-mixed or re-recorded versions of tracks from previous albums that the band hadn't been happy with originally. All the tracks have been re-mastered for this reissue, which also comes packaged in a slipcase. Tracks: Hung Up Down / Today / Observations From A Hill / Good Friend Of Mine / Drowned In Wine / Peace Of Mind / Hometown / The Cat & The Rat / No Mules Fool / See Through Windows / The Weavers Answer

Some people are going to refer to this as Americana but it's something else isn't it -we prefer to think of it as Australiana. What's that bit in the middle of that last song where all that glass and crystal shatters on the rocks? Like waltzing with a river in a flood, or like that feeling you get before a storm when it all goes dark and wrong. This is fierce fire and Big Low have done it again. A must hear for lovers of Woven Hand, Tom Waits or Calexico but particularly for those looking for something that doesnt sound quite like anything else you've ever heard.

Tracks: I Won't Let You Down / Brother Joe / Hang On To That Last Ray Of Hope / Yesterday Is Finished With You / Dark As A Dungeon / Deliberately Free / Kingdom Land / Sweet Rain / My Name Is Jimmy Governor / You'll Never Find Another Me / One Kind Favour / The Junction Of The Two Rivers

This is a beautiful album of instrumental compositions for UD written by Kamal Hors, a highly regarded composer and player. The atmosphere of the album is distinctly Arabic yet sparse in its approach. The rich and varied tones of the instruments of Kamals heart ring like night sounds in the Moroccan desert. Rhythmic and textural accompaniment is provided by two other expert Ud players and the whole thing is given an exquisite Indian twist with the presence of Sandip Bhattacharya on tabla’s.

A music journalist recently described Parne Gadje's sound as a meeting place for wandering souls looking to escape the everyday madness of the world. We like that. On Kefi Kefi there is a substantial shift away from the bands idiosyncratic Balkan influences towards floating Arabic style grooves. But of course, in typical Parne Gadje style, they leave you guessing again. We have tried to think of a music category that adequately describes their sound - we can assure you that there isn't one. Kefi Kefi magic.

WORLD

Equal parts Tom Zé and Thom Yorke, Brazil’s Lucas Santtana is one of the most interesting, dynamic and experimental singer-songwriter-producers from the ‘new generation’ of South American electro-acoustic musicians. Using only guitars, voices and ambient sound processed via samplers, pedals, filters and nonconventional recording techniques, on ‘Sem Nostalgia’ Santtana has re-imagined the sonic possibilities of these instruments to create a haunting, disorientating and forward thinking modern electro-acoustic masterpiece that introduces a brave new talent. ‘Sem Nostalgia’, is a 21st century masterpiece inspired by João Gilberto’s ‘Chega De Saudade’. ‘Chega De Saudade’ was released in 1959 and featuring only voice and guitars it changed the face of music forever by introducing the world to bossa nova. Since then, with artists so in awe of what this work achieved, the style has been frozen in time – until Lucas Santtana tore up the rulebook and brought this tradition slap bang into the 21st century. Lucas’s work sits alongside that of the Gotan Project, Juana Molina, CéU and El Guincho. He is an artist re-imagining the music of his home country within an international framework to create a new dynamic sound that with global appeal extends way beyond the world music clichés. In April this year The Wire magazine profiled Santtana in their feature on Sao Paulo’s music scene describing him as an artist characterised by his “restless cosmopolitanism”. He was also featured three times on Mais Um Discos’ critically acclaimed ‘Oi! A Nova Musica Brasileira!’ compilation of new Brazilian music – once as artist-songwriter and twice as songwriter, and his forthcoming digital download/7” has already picked up plays across three national BBC radio stations a month before release (Radio 1, 3 & 6).

• Singer-songwriter Jim Croce’s untimely death in a aeroplane crash (in September 1973, aged just 30) came at a point in his career when he seemed set for a lengthy and rewarding career. To the millions of fans he had made through his music, his death was almost like losing a close friend. Jim Croce’s emergence to global prominence came in the early 1970’s, an era dominated by the confessional singer-songwriter – albums such as Carole King’s ‘Tapestry’, James Taylor’s ‘Sweet Baby James’ and Neil Young’s ‘Harvest’ sold in their multi-millions. • After travelling the folk circuit and a couple of false starts, Croce released “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim” in July 1972. The title track reached # 8 and “Operator” reached # 17 in the US when issued as singles, and the album eventually got to # 1. “Life And Times” was issued in February 1973, a # 7 album which featured the # 1 hit “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown”. • The title track of “I Got A Name” had been issued as a single, but the album wasn’t issued until after Croce’s tragic death. The album subsequently sold millions, as did single issues of two of his best-known songs, “Time In A Bottle” and “I’ll Have To Say I Love You In A Song”. • The 50 songs on this two CD set represent his three albums as well as sixteen recordings issued on posthumous compilations. The 32 page booklet includes the lyrics to every song along with the full musician credits, and a 2000 word note by Alan Robinson.
