ROCK/POP NEW RELEASE - 24/2/2014 John Harle & Marc Almond The Tyburn Tree - Dark London SOSTT100114 SOSPIRO NOIR

5052442004714 £8.49

CD ROCK/POP

Two legends from different worlds collide in what promises to be a seminal album of songs about London. Composer/saxophonist John Harle and singer Marc Almond collaborate on ‘The Tyburn Tree - Dark London’ - an album of contemporary songs about the darkest sides of London’s history - from the Tyburn gallows to Jack the Ripper, and from settings of the words of William Blake to a unique take on the nursery rhyme ‘London Bridge is Falling Down’. Following Marc’s much lauded guest appearance on Harle’s ‘Art Music’, this is an album full of driving rhythms, emotional impact and theatrical story telling of the highest order. Along for the ride are noted soprano Sarah Leonard and great London poet and author Iain Sinclair who reads from his own texts. But it is the voice of Marc Almond that is the spiritual medium from which appears the ghosts of ‘Dark London’. “Marc is a true artist and true performer - showing total openness and vulnerability alongside an experimental, non-judgmental view of Art, and in ‘The Tyburn Tree’, London has found its Anti-Hero”. - John Harle “We all know that Marc Almond can sing but it still comes as a shock to hear his thrillingly drawn-out climax to Harle’s “The Arrival of Spring”, emoting words adapted from William Blake with operatic oomph.” - The Independent ‘The Tyburn Tree’ has been in gestation for two years - Almond is the primary lyricist, having researched the subject matter and gradually formed his own take on ‘Dark London’, creating lyrics that have both historical relevance and an ear-catching quirkiness. Alongside this John Harle has been writing music that proves him to be at the height of his powers - after a canon of work that includes his “O Mistress Mine” for Elvis Costello, and as composer of the theme to BBC1’s Silent Witness, he has matched Almond’s lyrics with some punchy, compact and bitter-sweet songs full of emotion, percussive shock and humour. ‘The Tyburn Tree’ promises to be a concept album of cult-status. Personnel: Marc Almond (voice) John Harle (voice, keyboards, saxophones), Sarah Leonard (voice), Neill MacColl, John Paricelli (guitars) Steve Lodder (keyboards), Dudley Phillips (bass), Martyn Barker (drums), Iain Sinclair (voice), Daniel Eisner Harle (sound design) Tracks: 1. WORLD NEW RELEASE - 24/2/2014 Boris Kovac & La Campanella Eastern Moon Rising TUGCD1076 RIVERBOAT

605633007626 £6.70

CD WORLD

The first international release in nine years from Serbian composer-bandleadersaxophonist Boris Kovac. His music is post-futuristic - it eschews genre and plays on clichéd expectations with its overblown drama and melancholy. As we kneel to worship at Boris’ ‘Eastern Moon Rising’, the ultimate Balkan entertainer blazes on high once again. ‘Eastern Moon Rising’ opens with a steamy sustained chord across the ensemble before launching into strutting first track “Fly By...’. Other tracks include the striking “My Eastern Heart’ and “On An Eastern Path”, which take direct inspiration from Boris’ Serbian roots, drawing on the wellspring of folk music from his homeland. “Simple, Simple...Life” is a carefree lilting tune that features distant yodels and shouts that decorate the closing sequence. “Sini Vals” (or ‘Grey Waltz’) opens with a sombre instrumental passage that sounds almost funeral-istic, before switching first into a peppy jazz waltz that first calls to mind French chanson and then snowballs into a brilliantly bizarre prog-rock tango feel. “Caravan” pays homage to Middle Eastern tradition with ululating string textures, a softly hummed voice part and woody clarinet lines. Tracks: 1. Fly By... 2. Play Odd 3. Pearl 4. On Eastern Path 5. Caravan 6. Sini Vals 7. My Eastern Heart 8. Pannonian Blues 9. Entertain You 10. Kazan 11. The acclaimed Scottish National Jazz Orchestra creates a power surge at Avatar Studios with electrifying performances, featuring some very special American guests. These include Kurt Elling, Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, David Liebman and Joe Locke, alongside SNJO director Tommy Smith. In June 2013, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra fulfilled a long-held ambition to cross the Atlantic and tour in the USA and Canada. How better to fill two free days than by inviting some friends over to record some tunes? The sessions at Avatar Studios brought together the brightest young minds in Scottish Jazz and some of the wisest heads in America today. The end result is power-packed contemporary jazz with fabulous featured artists feeding into the grid. Kurt Elling provides a smouldering vocal on “The Sound of Love” while SNJO director Tommy Smith is iridescent on 16-bars of lyrical tenor. CD JAZZ

Saxophonist Scott Hamilton and his quartet recorded in London on 4th January, 2012. The repertoire performed that night was the perfect showcase for the saxophonist’s melodic approach and included such evergreens as “Sweet and Lovely” and “Jitterbug Waltz”, together with an earthy dedication to another tenorman, Zoot Sims on “Zoot’s Blues”. Scott Hamilton first performed in the United Kingdom in 1978 and immediately became a favourite with British audiences. His association with Pizza Express’ Dean Street Jazz Club in London spans a period of some thirty five years and, from the mid -1980’s, he’s performed in a quartet format for several residencies each year, delighting the audiences on every occasion. Jacques Schwarz-Bart Jazz Racine Haiti 233811

MOTEMA

£7.99

JAZZ

Tenor saxophonist and composer Jacques Schwarz-Bart presents ‘Jazz Racine Haiti’, an innovative album at the crossroads of sacred Haitian voodoo music and jazz. On recordings and in concerts, Jacques Schwarz-Bart has been a collaborator of such diverse artists as Roy Hargrove, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, David Gilmore, Chucho Valdes, Danilo Perez, Ari Hoenig and Meshell N’Degeocello. In his efforts as a bandleader, however, he has followed a clear path, deeper and deeper into the music of his French Caribbean antecedents, which he has continued to blend with modern jazz. ‘Jazz Racine Haiti’, is a culmination of this work: alongside an international cast of musicians including two voodoo priests, Schwarz-Bart has created new arrangements of traditional Haitian voodoo ritual music and composed music inspired by his rigorous engagement with the genre. The resulting recording is at once an achievement of ethnomusicology and artistic innovation. And in spite of its faithful commitment to a centuries-old - and, to some, esoteric - musical and spiritual tradition, ‘Jazz Racine Haiti’ is a fresh and remarkably accessible work. Personnel: Jacques Schwarz-Bart (tenor saxophone), Erol Josué, Rozna Zila, Stephanie McKay (chants and vocals), Etienne Charles (trumpet), Alex Tassel (flugelhorn), Milan Milanović, Gregory Privat (piano), Ben Williams (double bass), Reggie Washington (electric bass), Obed Calvaire, Arnaud Dolmen (drums), Gaston “Bonga” Jean-Baptiste, Claude Saturne (percussion) Tracks: Kouzin / Banda / Blues Jon Jon / Bade Zile / Night / Kontredans / Sept Fe / Vaudou Zepole / Je Vous Aime Kongo / Legba Nan Baye

JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 17/2/2014 Hammond Eggs Back in the Pan IORCD771182 IN & OUT

798747711821 £8.49

CD JAZZ

Jermaine Landsberger, Paulo Morello and Christoph Huber’s mission is to revitalise the distinctive group sound of B3 organ, guitar and drums. They’re joined on their second recording for In & Out, ‘Hammond Eggs’, by two American “greats” - trumpeter Randy Brecker of Brecker Brothers fame and saxophonist Bob Mintzer, longtime member of the Yellowjackets. Whilst still incorporating the blues, boogaloo and the “dusty groove” approach of their first CD, this outing departs from the format by the judicious use of jazz-rock and funk elements. Brecker and Mintzer’s presence is entirely appropriate, then, and their passionate playing energises the tracks they feature on. Also on board are top European saxophonists Tony Lakatos and Kim Barth plus percussionist Dudu Penz. The core of the group remains the three leaders, however, with Landsberger’s resourceful keyboard playing being a primary component. Morello’s fluid fret work also stands out, and together with Huber’s drumming in straightforward and unusual meters, it makes for a wholly successful programme of music. Personnel: Jermaine Landsberger (organ, Fender Rhodes), Paulo Morello (guitars), Christoph Huber (drums) Guests: Randy Brecker (trumpet), Bob Mintzer, Tony Lakatos (tenor saxophone), Kim Barth (alto saxophone), Dudu Penz (bass) Tracks: Back In The Pan / Let‘s Vamos / For Django / Speed / Too Late Now / Be Three / Smooth Colors / Kostalogy / Hey Charly / Funkyhuber / Spektrolines

After their extraordinary 2010 debut album, ‘The Way We Talk’, guitarist Ratko Zjaca and accordionist Simone Zanchini return to the studio to write another chapter in the history of cross-genre music. Their second In & Out CD, ‘Beyond The Lines’, is another engaging mix of jazz, folk and world music and also features fellow members of the ZZ quartet, bassist Martin Gjakonovski and renowned American drummer Adam Nussbaum. Born in Croatia, Ratko Zjaca went on to study at the New York University School of Music. It was this move to the United States that led to him performing with the likes of Randy Brecker, John Patitucci and Steve Gadd - who all performed on his earlier ‘Continental Talk’ album. Simone Zanchini is considered one of the most innovative accordion players in Europe and his highly personal take on improvisation involves blending acoustic and electronic sound in a unique way. This open approach to music making is mirrored by the whole group in the eleven tracks that make up this distinctive album. 716043177622 £8.49

CD JAZZ

Rich Perry’s album ‘Nocturne’ marks the twenty-first release in his twenty-one year tenure with SteepleChase and for the first time Rich employs guitar (by Nat Radley) instead of piano for his quartet. They perform a selection of eight jazz standards from composers such as Charlie Parker, Kenny Dorham, Cole Porter and others. Rich Perry is arguably one of the best-kept-secret of today’s modern jazz scene in spite of all the talks of admiration by the critics and the fellow musicians such as tenor player David Valdez. To quote Valdez from his blog, “Rich never plays down to the audience, never compromising his advanced harmonic and rhythmic concepts in favour of wide accessibility...Even though he stays on the cutting edge Rich’s sound is always musical and melodic.” Personnel: Rich Perry (tenor saxophone), Nate Radley (guitar), John Hebert (bass), Jeff Hirshfield (drums) Tracks: Autumn Nocturne / Cherokee / Never Let Me Go / Old Folks / I've Never Been in Love Before / My Little Suede Shoes / You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To / Lotus Blossom

WORLD/BLUES/JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 24/2/2014 Stein Urheim HUBROCD2529 HUBRO

Stein Urheim

7033662025299 £7.99

CD WORLD/BLUES/JAZZ

The Bergen-based guitarist Stein Urheim made a profound impression with his album ‘Kosmolodi’, which was released in an extremely limited edition on vinyl in 2012. ‘Stein Urheim’ is a playful and cohesive eponymous album where he takes his very idiosyncratic instrumental music to new and subtle heights. On this album, in addition to guitars Urheim plays a wide variety of stringed instruments from different corners of the world. Urheim’s music is permeated by a kind of exoticism. It is thoughtful without losing its sense of humour. The influences of jazz, North American and West African blues, and folk music from all over the world are obvious. Urheim himself says that among his sources of inspiration are the American composers Lou Harrison and Steve Reich, Chinese gu qin music, langeleik (Norwegian zither) music from Valdres, and Ornette Coleman. Stein Urheim has already released two critically acclaimed albums on Bugge Wesseltoft's Jazzland label together with singer and musician Mari Kvien Brunvoll. He has been a member of Gabriel Fliflet's band Aresong and HP Gundersen's highly respected drone band The Last Hurrah. Personnel: Stein Urheim (guitars, flutes, harmonica, slide tamboura, fretless bouzouki, gu qin, mandolin, langeleik, charango, banjo, analog synths and effects), Jørgen Traeen (modular synth and effects) Tracks: Kosmoloda / After the Festival / Watch the View / Beijing Blues / Great Distances

CD2 EASY LISTENING

Faces and fads come and go, but nothing lasts like a classic love song! Sit back, relax and revel in the impeccable artistry of Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Doris Day and many more, as they bring you the sweetest, smoothest and most heartfelt songs ever written. Remember how tunes like “That’s Amore”, “Unchained Melody” and “The Twelfth of Never” captured the thrill of first love - and how, in melancholy times, just the first heart-tugging notes of The Four Aces’ “Three Coins in the Fountain” or Shirley Bassey's soaring “As Long As He Needs Me” could change your mood in a moment? Gathered here are tunes that speak the language of love exquisitely and sincerely - all matched to the class and style of Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Billy Eckstine and Dickie Valentine, in hard-to-get recordings you very rarely hear on the radio today. So take a trip back to a more innocent time - to the heyday of heart-throbs and mighty movie tunes like True Love and Mona Lisa, to an era when melody was king and lyrics had meaning.
