San Francisco’s agit-prop nomads Rupa & the April Fishes are back with a second album crossing borders with a blend of French alternative chansons, rousing Latin groov es and energetic Gypsy swing. With their second album, este mundo (this world), Rupa & the April Fishes hold up a carnival mirror to life and present a warped, humorous and occasionally disquieting reflection. Sequestered beneath Rupa’s infectious and captivating melodies are thought-provoking themes that address life, love, art, death and the real and artificial divisions that keep us apart. The San Francisco-based musical agitators are specialists in crossing borders and building bridges, and on este mundo, due out on Cumbancha on Oct. 27, they effortlessly blur the boundaries of genre and geography to create a sound Time Out has called global agit-pop. Este mundo was recorded at Prairie Sun Studios by engi neer and sound wizard Oz Fritz, who is best known for his work with Tom Waits (Mule Variations). Guests include rapper Boots Riley of The Coup, along with some of the Bay Area’s best musical talents including Tin Hat’s trumpeter Ara Anderon and Serbian slap bassist Djordje Stijepovic. Rupa & the April Fishes blend an alternative pop attitude with international spices, mixing in elements of Gypsy swing, Colombian cumbia, Frenc h chanson and Indian ragas. According to lead singer Rupa Marya, “este mundo is a collection of sounds and songs highlighting life’s accidental beauty and surging joy as well as their inexorable partner: human suffering.”

Studio album by one of Europe's most successful international line-ups. Memo Gonzalez from Texas & The Bluescasters play deep blues, swing, rock, soul & funk. New studio album, featuring one of Europe's most successful international line-ups. Since joining efforts in the mid-nineteen- nineties, front man Memo Gonzalez from Texas and the Bluescasters have been performing their unique blend of deep bl ues, swing, a little rock, plus soul and funk to an enthusiastic audience in Europe and the U.S.A. With 'Live In The UK' the band debuted on the CrossCut label in 2006. 'Dynomite', the Bluescasters new studio album, is focusing more on the songs. Mostly originals, the majority of tunes were collectively written by Memo and guitar player Kai Strauss. Right from the opening tune, you'll hear the band's new mix of funky soul and bluesy grooves. Empow ered by Kai Strauss' (Germany) supreme guitar riffs and licks, supported by Erkan Özedemir's (Turkey) pulsating bass lines and Henk Punter's (The Netherlands) steady beats, Memo Gonzalez (U.S.A.) continues to tell his stories of life. He's yearning and suffering, he's fighting and he's furious. Then again he sings and plays the harmonica with passion and irrepressible energy. Beyond doubt, Kai must be regarded one of the best blues guitar players, worldwide. His playing is intense and powerful. He covers a wide range of stylistic refinement, and he never overplays. Plus he puts his heart and soul into his playing. With Henk and Erkan the Bluescasters are featuring one of the strongest European blues rhythm sections. "We wanted to show the people that we were capable of broadeni ng our musical horizons. We wanted to show that we weren't just another 'shuffle, swing and slow band'", Memo says. "In the near future we will be coming out with some more songs that walk the fine edge of the blues, experimenting with funk and more soul." We are excited! And we are highly recommending one of the band's stirring live shows, nearby. With best regards from the Bluescasters, and Memo Gonzalez, "keep on bluez'n." BLUES

Formed in 2000, The Aces have attitude and a different idea of how to play Blues. They reduce the Blues to pounding riffs and a distorted wall of sound topped by wailing harp. They were among the first to absorb and recast the drone riff-based Hill Country Blues style, and The Aces do that their own way. In March 2009, The Aces signed with El Toro Records. Hailing from California (USA), their debut album “ No One Rides For Free ” is a collection of 10 original songs which fans of the band call punk trance blues or poundi ng riffs and a distorted wall of sound topped by wailing har p. The bands goal was to capture that raw primitive sound which is present at their live shows. The record was recorded live in the studio with no overdubs utilizing old fender tweed tube amps pushed to the brink of exploding captured with 1940’s and 1950’s microphones. What makes the band unique is that there is no bass player. Instead The Aces opt for a lead and rhythm guitar combination which has a fresh “old reminiscent” sound. Listen to the lyrics and you will hear streams of poetic consciousness sung from real life experiences. The songwriting of the band shows that they are not trying to sound like anyone, but are moving tradition forward. The Aces are Sky O’Banion on Harp/V ocals, Derek Irving lead guitar, Mike Gutsch on drums and special quests on rhythm guitar. Neither the Broadway nor the London White Horse Inn was recorded commercially but what surv iv es on rare transcription discs is a 1935 radio broadcast with the Broadway cast starring Kitty Carlisle, which we hav e restored for this CD issue. British and German period recordings which best illustrate the bouncy melodic charms of this zany musical extrav aganza hav e also been found to complement this release. Im weissen Rössl – its original German title – premiered at Berlin’s Grosses Schauspielhaus on 8 Nov ember, 1930 for 416 performances. THE POOZIES began their career in 1990 after Patsy Seddon and Mary Macmaster (aka Scottish harp duo, Sileas) had worked with singer Sally Barker on her second solo album. The Poozies have undergone lineup changes from time to time but in 2009 The Poozies world turned full circle when the original band member Sally Barker, after an absence, rejoined the band. Seventeen years down the line The Poozies seem to have found the secret of eternal youth. Still with three original members, Sally, Patsy and Mary, they have been energised by the perfectly compatible addition of Eilidh and Mairearad, and remain as fresh and delightful as ever. The Poozies recipe is a fragrant casserole of inventive interpretations, creative collaborations and melodic mastery, saturated by the spice of open-mindedness with which they happily explore the musical universe. In this inspirational band of women, the passion of Sally Barker’s vivid voice is reinforced by the percussive power of her rock solid guitar; irresistible energy bursts from Eilidh Shaw’s faultless fiddle; the perfect precision of Patsy Seddon’s shimmering harp intertwines with the magical melodies of Mairearad Green’s delicately dextrous accordion, all grounded by the growing groove of Mary Macmaster’s capacious Camac electro harp and rounded off by the blending of five different yet sympathetic voices in heart-wrenching harmony. The band has enjoyed great success wherever they have travelled. This is largely due to the spirit of joy in their music, which is at their core whatever changes are on the surface. The success of The Poozies is evidenced by their continued popularity with audiences throughout the world. They play to packed houses wherever they go and are constantly in demand at festivals throughout the summer months. “Under the Rug” is Broom Bezzums’ hotly awaited second album. 12 tracks of honest traditional music loaded with ener gy, genuine emotion and inevitable humour . “Under the Rug” is Broom Bezzums’ hotly awaited second album, emerging 15 months after their critically acclaimed debut CD “Arise you sons of freedom…” Retaining the political stance set out in its predecessor, “Under the Rug” features tracks such as the traditional Black Country song Collier’s March, delivered with Mark Bloomer’s trademark vocal passion and sturdy guitar, augmented with Andrew Cadie’s rousing harmonies and rapi d Northumbrian pipes flourishes. Fiddle-singing features strongly as both singers unfold the ballad of “Binnorie” on the openi ng track, over a fiddle and guitar groove which builds up over time with mandola and bowed double bass. This line-up is revisited in “Banks of the Dee”, a pitman’s lament set to a swaggering accompaniment. Instrumental sets punctuate the track list, with numbers such as the raucous “Disco Reels” and the quirky title-track “Under the Rug”. Original songs from Andrew Cadie this time include “This Happy Marriage”, an ode to Anglo-Scots relations over several centuries; “Miner’s Ghost”, which charts changes in Northum berland through a real life ghost story and “Clipboard Lassies”, a ‘come all ye’ warning about the woes of easy credit. Startling debut album captures this head on assault on your senses perfectly - trapped in their studio while the worst storms for several decades raged outside, the band’s marathon recording sessions were fuelled with a diet of caffeine and shouting. With a sound much bigger than the sum of their parts, Chris Sharkey plays guitar and bass at the same time, Christophe de Bézenac uses the saxophone, effects and the voice to create a multi-layered sound while Chris Bussey’s ferocious polyrhythmic drumming style would put at least two drummers to the test. Formed in 2006, trio VD collectively have worked with an astonishingly diverse range of musicians including Jack De Johnette, Marc R ibot, Ken Vandermark, Henry Rollin s, David Murray, Marc Ducret and the London Sinfonietta to name but a few. Most recently Sharkey has joined Acoustic Ladyland and features on their new album as well as tearing it up on the live circuit with death metallers Bilbao Syndrome. “Earth-shattering, taking a sledgehammer to preconceived limitations of jazz." Legendary American trumpet player in a superb ‘live’ session from the 1960s with one of the UK’s finest bands. Wild Bill Davidson was one of the legendary trumpeters of American Jazz. He was part of the famous ‘Condon Gang’ from the 1930s onwards pioneering the Chicago Sc hool of Jazz. His hard driving trumpet and hard-living served to confirm his legendary status. The Alex Welsh band was the first choice of all the visiting American stars (Earl Hines, Red Allen, Bud Freeman, Peanuts Hucko, Pee Wee Russell, Eddie Miller, etc.) being, arguably , the best band of its style in the UK. Wild Bill toured the UK with the band in the mid 1960s. This session recorded ‘live’ at the Manchester Sports Guild in 1966 sees the band and Wild Bill on particularly fine form. The wonderful rhythm section anchored by one of our best drummers, Lennie Hastings, provides the bedrock for the front line of class players: Alex Welsh, Roy Williams and John Barnes. Despite his wild man image, Bill’s feature Blue & Broken Hearted and Blue Again reveal him to be a sensitive and innovative player of real class. Launch of a new duo with a most uncommon instrumentation, acoustic guitar and trumpe t – but it’s a highly attractive combination. Ralph Towner, guitarist extraordinaire, an ECM artist since 1972, is joined by Italian trumpet star Paolo Fresu, making his label de but for ECM. Bright melodies and subtle colours prev ail in a programme of old and new Ralph Towner compositions, plus improv isations, and a fav ourite from “Kind of Blue” era Miles Dav is. The choice of “Blue In Green” as the sole cov er v ersion here say s something about the aesthetic priorities of both musicians. These are play ers who understand the power of silence and melodic clarity . Fresu’s trumpet play ing, with his clear v ibratoless sound, has often been compared with that of Miles Dav is. Towner first encountered Fresu 15 y ears ago, at a festiv al in Sardinia where the guitarist had been commissioned to write music for an ensemble. Paolo was the trumpet play er. “From the first phrase he play ed I thought: wow, this guy really understands melodies!” The piece play ed that day , “Punta Giara”, is rev isited here. “Sacred Place” and “Doubled Up” are the first recordings to feature Ralph’s new baritone guitar, tuned a fifth below standard guitar tuning. The instrument, reaching down for the deep notes, wonderfully balances Fresu’s flugelhorn. Elsewhere Ralph’s classical guitar sings in its unique way . Perfect moments, lik e a flaring of firework s. Chiaroscuro is Ralph Towner’s 22nd album as a leader for ECM, in a discography with well ov er 30 titles. Alongside the landmark recordings lik e Diary , Solstice and Batik , this one has all the hallmarks of a classic. Christmas music has bee n an enthusiasm of the great A merican pianist and composer Carla Bley’s for decades – and here at last is a Carla Bley Christmas album! A n ideal seasonal gift. Not surprisingly, the traditional and non-traditional pieces are subjected to her offbeat wit and idiosyncratic arranging skills. The originality of the approach brings to mind Charles Iv es’s “Old Songs Deranged”, but the pieces are play ed with lov e. The pleasure that the musicians – Carla, bassist Stev e Swallow and the Partyk a Brass Quintet – find in the material is unmistak able and, particularly after a glass or two of mulled wine, contagious. Selections include “O Tannenbaum”, “Away In A Manger”, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, “Jingle Bells”, “O Holy Night” and “Joy To the World”, plus Mel Tormé’s “The Christmas Song” and a brace of Carla’s own pieces – “Jesus Maria” (first recorded by Jimmy Giuffre back in 1961), and, giv ing the dev il his due, “Hell’s Bells”. The album is issued in a period when Carla is much in the news internationally . REGGAE

Cedric Im Brooks is an old boy of the Alpha School in Kingston, Jamaica, alongside alumni like Don Drummond, Johnny Moore and Tommy McCook of The Skatalites, jazzmen Joe Harriott and Harold McNair, and too many other musical giants to mention. He was a member of The Vagabonds, before Jimmy James moved the group to England, and during the sixties toured Caribbean hotels and clubs with various big bands and combos. His own musical horizons — especially the new jazz music — were increasingly distant from these constrained commercial contexts; and he eagerly accepted an invitation to visit a friend in the U.S. In Philadel phia, Cedric was awe-struck by the music and vibes of the Sun Ra Arkestra. He was on the point of joining the commune when the birth of his second daughter necessitated his return to Jamaica. Amazingly, though rocksteady was in full swing on the island, Cedric took up Ra’s challenge by starting The Mystics, to experiment with free jazz and poetry, African robes and dancers. During this period, Cedric’s long association with Studio One produced the hit single ‘Money Maker’; and his musical direction of Count Ossie’s Mystic Revelation of Rastafari was commemorated by the classic Grounation triple-LP set, before his frustrations with purely rasta patterns encouraged him to set up The Light of Saba, to go into other aspects of African drumming. Taking leads from Hugh Masekela and Fela Kuti, the recordings of Cedric Im Brooks and The Light of Saba delineate ‘world music’ way ahead of its time. They offer a blend of African and US, Cuban and other West Indian influences — calypso and funk, rumba and bebop, nyabinghi and disco — magnificently expressed as classic reggae. This compilation is drawn from extremely rare singles and LPs. Tracks: Lambs Bread Collie / Sabasi / Free Up Black Man / Outcry / Salt Lane Rock / Sabebe / Nobody's Business / Rasta Lead On Version / Sabayindah / Rebirth / Satta Massa Gana / Africa / Sound / Sly Mongoose / Words of Wisdom / Jah Light It Right / Ethiopia Tikdem / Song For My Father / Collie Version ALSO AVAILABLE: Double LP vinyl (HJRLP4)

HONEST JON'S RECORDS

WO RLD

'The best soul album — in the real sense of the word — you'll hear this year... classic, blistering afrobeat' (Daily Telegraph); 'as tight as a pressure cooker... fierce and fun' (The Wire); 'son meilleur album... monumentale, triomphante, orgasmique' (Les Inrockuptibles); '**** utterly infectious... a triumphant return' (The Observer). Tony Allen is the co-creator of Afrobeat, and one of the most distinctive and in-demand drummers on the planet. No one swings like this Nigerian rhythm man — with that amazing, loose-limbed, polyrhythmic technique that has powered some of the funkiest and most challenging dance music ever created. And Lagos No Shaking is his most powerful and personal album to date: a return to core values; a testament to the fact that afrobeat is best served straight — hot, hard and percussionheavy. Tony Allen grew up surrounded by rhythm: the local palm-wine and juju sounds loved by his motor mechanic father, and the pan-African, big-band hi ghlife then sweeping the clubs of Africa — exemplified by the great Ghanaian bandl eader E. T. Mensah. The young Tony dev eloped an obsession with drums. But opportunities to get near a kit were few and far between in 1950s Lagos. He made his professional debut at the age of 18, while working as a radio technician, playing claves with Sir Victor Olaiya and his Cool Cats. When the regular drummer left, Tony was handed the sticks. He went on honing his technique with Negu Morris And The Heatwaves, the Nigerian Messengers and the Western Toppers Highlife Band. His role models were Art Blakey and the Ghanaian drummer Koffi Ghanaba, aka Guy Warren. Then, in 1964, Tony was invited to audition for a band called Koola Lobitos, led by a young Nigerian — just returned from music studies in London — named Fela Kuti. Fela’s influence on the young drummer was incalculable. But then so was Tony’s on Fela. Here was exactly the musician Fela had been looki ng for: capable of fusing jazz and highlife sensibilities and sounding, as Kuti put it, ‘like five drummers at once’. If Fela was afrobeat’s mind and mouth, Tony Allen was its arms and legs, his webs of cascading off-beats endlessly powering the music forward. Allen split with Fela in 1978 — citing the bandleader’s lack of care for his musicians. He relocated to Paris in 1980, involving himself in an amazing diversity of collaborative projects over the succeeding decades. Now, finally, Tony Allen himself is back. Recorded over ten all-night sessions in the Ikeja district, Lagos No Shaking is the first Lagos-recorded album on which Tony has had complete artistic freedom. But it is also a truly collaborative work, which draws on the city’s diverse musical traditions and brings together several generations of Lagosian musical talent. Key among the veterans is the extraordinary 76 year-old palm-wine singer Fatai Rolling Dollar, who adds his throatily commanding tones and throbbi ng agidi gbo thumb piano to four tracks. From Fela’s classic Afrika 70 and Egy pt 80 line-ups, saxmen Baba Ani and Show Boy add that essential deep-blasting horn undertow. There are the r&b sensibilities of Yinka Davies and Omololu Ogunleye; and Muritala Adisa adds touches of ewe, a form of spoken praise-singing rooted in ancent Yoruba tradition. But the key element is, of course, Tony Allen’s powerful, yet magnicently relaxed drumming, which keeps everything in perpetual rocking motion, tempering the har d funk edges of classic afrobeat with earthier Lagosian flavours. Indeed, while the album’s observations on Lagos life are aptly tough and sardonic, this is a warmer, more down-home, perhaps a more humane album than anythi ng Fela ever produced. Lagos No Shaking means Lagos is on form, Lagos is solid; and on Awa Na Re Fatai Rolling Dollar sings the praises of a city that has been much reviled – not least by its own inhabitants. ‘Lagos is a fantastic place,’ he sings over rolling traditional percussion. ‘In Lagos you can get whatever you want.’ Ise Nla maintains the mood with talk of a ‘dream ticket, a fantastic job’. In Moyege Lolu thanks his parents for good upbringi ng and the freedom he feels when he stays with them. Ole ('Lazy') and Ogogoro — an ode to the local gin, complete with drunken marital discussion — warn of the dangers of hanging around in bars. Morose bemoans the grim expressions of the people of Lagos; and Losun alleges and lambasts the inexpressiveness of Nigerian men with true afrobeat frankness. Lagos No Shaking is a spectacular homecoming for Tony Allen, an acerbic, unflinching love letter to the city that gave him life in rhythm. ALSO AVAILABLE: Vinyl LP (H JRLP 20)

HONEST JON'S RECORDS

African musicians seem to have an unquenc hable fascination for the music of Latin America, especially Cuba. And why not? Much of what makes modern Latin music so irresistible came from Africa in the first place. When the first waves of African rhythms, reconstituted in the Caribbean, retur ned home on radios and records, Africans—especially in West and central Africa—received them with great enthusiasm. Staid dance bands that replicated European music soon began to swing as Caribbean accents settled in their rhythm sections. By the 1950s Africa had produced its own Calypsonians, and more than one African musician changed his name to give it a Latin flavour. Sierra Leone's Gerald Pine, for example, became Geraldo Pino, and Congo-Brazzaville's Jean Serge Essous called himself Jerry Lopez for a time. Some even composed songs in Spanish, while others wrote nonsense lyrics that only sounded like the real thing. There is no better evidence of this push-me-pull-you, back-andforthing than the Afro-Latin compilation we have here. As the heady, post-independence sixties yielded to seventies' realism, no band mixed local and Latin styles more successfully than Orchestre Baobab and its leader Balla Sidibe. The mesmerizing On Verra Ca finds Baobab leaning in the direction of the stuttering Mbalax sound that Youssou N'Dour carried to great popularity. Other Senegalese bands followed the trend, like the Rio Band and Orchestre N'Guewel, whose version of the Cuban standard Mi Guajiro is drawn from the LP Xadim (a presentation of 'Salsa Musique', according to its cover — although most of the album is devoted to Mbalax). Senegal's Laba Sosseh — born in Gambia like his compatriot Amara Toure — embraced AfroCuban sounds wholeheartedly, styling himself as a salsa singer after his hero Johnny Pacheco. Sosseh went on to record in New York with Monguito (for Sacodis), and for Roberto Torres' SAR label alongside other Afro-Cuban legends like Alfredo Valdes and Alfredo 'Chocolate' Armenteros. Here his Guantanamo offers an upbeat take from long before that wretched corner of Cuba became synonymous with US mistreatment of war prisoners. Moving south and east along the coast, we eventually reach the sliver of West Africa known as Benin. Sandwiched between the musical powerhouses Ghana and Nigeria, Benin's artists often struggle to be heard. Still, that didn't keep the singer Gnonnas Pedro from trying. Leading a group called the Panchos throughout the sixties, Pedro sang in nearly every pop style imaginable, but he seems especially at home in an Afro-Cuban embrace, as you will hear on the 1977 recording Adigbedoto. Our closing track also comes from Benin, a 1976 recording by the celebrated Orchestre Poly Rythmo — though the singer, Pierre Tchana, hails from Cameroun. Quiero Wapacha features another Camerounian singer, Charles Lembe. Across the Congo River in Leopoldville (today's Kinshasa) the legendary OK Jazz — which, incidentally, Essous helped to start — recorded any number of Afro-Cuban inspired sides: Micorrason — Mi Corazon, my heart, my love — is one of the band's earliest songs, recorded soon after its formation in 1956. All three of the group's songs on this album feature the work of founding member and lead guitarist Luambo 'Franco', who led the band to preeminence for over thirty years. Another of this compilation's Latin enthusiasts from the two Congos, Joseph Kabasele is often considered the father of Congo music itself. A terrific singer, he formed the genre's first great band, African Jazz, in the early fifties. When the group broke up a decade later, Kabasele eventually made his way to Paris. Back in 1961 he had introduced the fledgling saxophonist Manu Dibango of Cameroun into African Jazz, and so once in Paris he looked up the now very accomplished multiinstrumentalist. Many years later, Dibango recalled to me that in Paris 'there was a Cuban flutist, fantastic Don Gonzalo, fantastic arranger... arrangi ng charanga with strings. Beautiful!... And the idea came to ask him to do some arrangements with African music... And that was one of my thrills in music, this writing with Cuban music and African music here in Paris. It's a pity that we didn't continue this type of experimentation.' The three, with Essous occasionally sitting in, recorded a number of songs in 1966 and '67, including Africa Boogaloo, under the name African Team. All the recordings presented here flow from an unparalleled period of exuberance and creativity. World War II had ended. Independence from colonial rulers had been, or was about to be, won. The blight of homegrown tyranny had yet to descend on the land. It was Africa's moment, optimistic and free! You can hear it in the music. -Gary Stewart, author of Rumba On The River ALSO AVAILABLE: Double vinyl LP (H JRLP 41) - 404717921731

F0039 5060159430399 CD FOLKWIT RECORDS STUNNING DEBUT MINI-ALBUM BY LOUISE LE MAY – HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL SONGS PRODUCED AND ARRANGED BY LOUIS PHILLIPE London-based singer-songwriter Louise Le May has released one of the most genuinely original and deeply moving debuts of recent years. Recorded in collaboration with the widely revered songwriter, performer and arranger Louis Philippe, Tell Me One Thing That Is New heralds the arrival of an extraordinary new talent. Louise possesses a voice that is at once haunting, intimate and achingly powerful. But just as importantly, she composes sensuous, serpentine melodies that never take the familiar path when there’s the possibility of discovering a fresh new perspective, at the same time incorporating thrilling vocal harmonies that swoop and soar. Factor in the magical arrangements of Louis Philippe and the super b musicianship of pianist Danny Manners, and you have something very special indeed. "A triumph. The arrangements are top-flight" - Van Dyke Parks, composer/arranger/Brian Wilson collaborator "I have been playi ng Louise's absolutely beautiful and haunting songs incessantly. The arrangements are magnificent " - Jonathan Coe, author of What A Carve-Up! and The Rotters Club "This is English music, honest and open. Louise’s songs are strange without being quirky and delivered with a settled assurance. She has the steady delivery of Judee Sill, but the harmonic flavour of Kate Bush or Robert Wyatt." - Sean O'Hagan, the High Llamas Tracks; Be My Guru / Photographic / The Only Fish / Coal-Marble-Stone / War With Love / The Only Fish Ii / Be My Guru Ii
