Israel Nash Gripka CSCCD1058

New York Town CD

Israel Nash Gripka was born and raised amongst the sightly and unsightly scenes of the backdrop of the Midwest, where cattle outnumber people and dirt roads hug the country side. Watered daily with old school country and receiving the nutrient rays of rock 'n' roll, Gripka has developed roots strong enough to not only hol d his own as a singer songwriter, but also strong enough to grab the listener by the foot and put them on the ground. Beginning by fronting numerous band pr ojects, Gripka has now embarked on his solo endeav ors and in doing so has relocated to New York City. Gripka's solo debut, New York Town, serves up a portion of tasty Americana music that is backed up by a stellar band of swirling organs, quivering pedal steel strides, gospel infused harmonies, and well seasoned percussion. Taking lead is Gripka's commanding voice which sounds most like a rusted out steam train that is coming to either pick someone up or run them over. Although stomping feet and jovial hollers are staples of a listener's expression, Gripka's ultimate desire is for his music to provide a sanctuary for them: "I really want my music to touch people at an level that fosters personal reflection." Through the prose of real stories about real people, including personal examinations of heartbreak and longing, Gripka does exactly that. He is an up and coming artist that should reach the sight of your crosshairs very soon. Tracks: Evening / Pray For Rain / Let It Go / Bricks / You Were Right / Confess / Either Way / Let Me Down / Concrete / Don't Run / Pink Long-Stem Rose / Beautiful

Folk NEW RELEASE INFORMATION – 31/08/2009 Darwin Song Project SFFCD01

Darwin S ong Project CD

Unique songwriting collaboration and performance between eight of the most celebrated folk artists from the UK and the US; Chris Wood, Karine Polwart, Emily Smith, Jez Lowe, Mark Erelli, Krista Detor, Stu Hanna, Rachael McShane. In March 2009 eight artists gathered together in rural Shropshire for a week long songwriting retreat, to create new works that have a ‘resonance and relevance’ to Darwin – who was born in Shrewsbury in 1809. The eight artists cover a wide range of songwriting experience and styles – from the experience of Chris Wood and Jez Lowe, through to the youth of Rachael McShane and Stu Hanna. Bringing in two celebrated American singer/songwriters in Mark Erelli and Krista Detor, alongside Karine Polwart and Emily Smith who have both previously being involved in similar collaborative events, gave the perfect artistic balance for the project. The CD captures 17 of the songs performed on the night, and features all 8 artists in both lead and supporting roles, culminating in Woods’ ensemble piece. The songs cover all aspects of Darwin’s life and legacy, and as you’d expect from the pedigree of artists involved, the quality of the songs and performances is exceptional. The live CD has been beautifully mixed by Stu Hanna (who is currently producing the new Show of Hands disc), and it captures the magic of these songs on their first public performance. Many of the songs are already finding their way in the Darwin artists’ individual live repertoire. The Darwin Song Project has already been the subject of a dedicated BBC Radio 4 documentary, featured on Mike Harding’s BBC Radio 2 show with interviews and songs, as well as features on various local BBC radio stations. Jazz NEW RELEASE INFORMATION - RELEASE DATE 31/08/2009 Dinah Washington 6S 229006

Mellow Mama LP

Dinah Washi ngton (1924-1963) was at once one of the most beloved and controversial singers of the mid-20th century -- beloved to her fans, devotees, and fellow singers; controversial to critics who still accuse her of selling out her art to commerce and bad taste. Her principal sin, apparently, was to cultivate a distinctive vocal style that was at home in all kinds of music, be it R&B, blues, jazz, middle of the road pop -- and she probably would have made a fine gospel or country singer had she the time. Hers was a gritty, salty, high-pitched voice, marked by absolute clarity of diction and clipped, bluesy phrasing. Washington's personal life was turbulent, with seven marriages behind her , and her interpretations showed it, for she displayed a tough, totally unsentimental, yet still gripping hol d on the universal subject of lost love. She has had a huge influence on R&B and jazz singers who have followed in her wake, notably Nancy Wilson, Esther Phillips, and Diane Schuur. Dinah Washi ngton's first solo recordings (with the exception of a session supervised by Lionel Hampton in 1943) are included on this repackaging of her Apollo sides. Recorded in Los Angeles during a three-day period, the 12 selections feature the singer with a swinging jazz combo that has tenor-saxophonist Lucky Thompson, trumpeter Karl George, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and bassist Charles Mingus among its eight members. The 21-year-old Washington was already quite distinctive at this early stage and easily handles the blues and jive material with colour and humor. Tracks: Mellow Mama Blues / All Or Nothing Blues / Rich Man's Blues / Chewin' Mama Blues / Blues For A Day / Wise Woman Blues / My Voot Is Really Vout / Pacific Coast Blues / Beggin' Mama Blues / Walking Blues / No Voot No Boot / My Lovin' Papa

Gharnati Music

Music from Andalusia is like a mirror of a heterogeneous society and the encounters between its constituent cultures. It encapsulates the heritage of the Arabian music from the East, which had integrated Greek and Persian elements and Byzantine sounds, as well as Arabian modulations and rhythms. Berber rhythms fusing with the culture of the Iberian peninsula. In the final centuries of Al Andalus contact between the two regions on either side of the Strait of Gibraltar intensified. Large numbers of migrants settled in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, many of them from families that took pride in their colourful worldly heritage. This rich legacy, which is still being added to, appeari ng in all kinds of local flavours, is referred to as Música Andalusí. By way of tribute to the city of Granada, the last Arab stronghol d in Spain, the Tarab Gharnatí stands out as one of its leading components. The development of this style in Morocco is the result of a living oral tradition among both Andalusian and Moriscos families, as well as Jewish families originating from Al Andalus, who now lived in Fez, Rabat, Sala, Tetuán and Oujda. We cannot really speak of musica gharnatí without putting it in its proper geographic context, which even includes Algeria – a country that gave this style its brilliance and vivaciousness. Indeed, even the people of Fez used the term dziri when referring to tarab gharnati. The art of the gharnatí music runs the full gamut of delicate melodies and rhythms, as the structure of the Nuba shows. It illustrates the works of the great Al Andalus poets, with rhythmic compositions dominated by serenity, depth and nobility. This is about the very last remaining piece of musical heritage from Islamic Spain, preserved for five centuries and still very much alive along the coasts of North Africa. Until it was banned by the Spanish Inquisition, it was also the musical style of the Moriscos. Despite all bans and historical changes, these sounds, songs and rhythms have managed to survive intact within the intimacy of today’s Andalusian music, both in folk music and in flamenco.
