Contents Double Vision A few years ago I had my eyes lasered, so I have a clean bill of health on this front. No tunnel vision, no myopia, no double vision. And, although I didn’t do so fabulously at school maths, I do understand the rudimentaries of counting. With both of these abilities intact, I am hard-pressed to understand the attendance figures quoted by some exhibition companies. I’m often at the keynote address which usually enjoys the largest attendance. Call it 80 percent! Then both myself and a staff member or two will be at the exhibition proper for the duration. We do rough calculations as we walk around and arrive at a figure of around 400 delegates, for example. Here we exclude anyone who is not strictly a delegate, such as the organiser’s staff. A few weeks later, we’ll receive a press release, post publicity, quoting a figure of 700 delegates? There’s fudging the numbers, and there’s truly creative. As the economy tightens and companies cannot afford to send a multitude of staff to these events, in terms of time or money, a better yardstick may be visitor quality. A number is just that a number unless the decision-making men and women turn up. But getting the balance right between ‘big picture’ exhibition stands and those showcasing ‘on-the-ground’ materials handling equipment is a factor too if each is to attract visitor traffic. Various attachements

Various kinds of Meclift attachments increase opportunities for using one machine for multiple purposes. For example, a Meclift fitted with a coil ram or coil clamp, can efficiently and safely handle steel coils or rolls of wire. Another important lifting attachment is the double fork system that enhances the flexibility and performance of goods handling. The double fork attachment offers many benefits when loading and unloading containers or trailers. For example, four pallets or a similar load can be easily handled at the same time and it is possible to fully load a 20ft container with only two lifts.

Truck Sales Rocket The South African commercial vehicle market got off to a flying start this year, showing a 7.3% increase to 1 653 sales.

T

his is according to the latest results released for January 2019 by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), Associated Motor Holdings (AMH) and Amalgamated Automobile Distributors (AAD).

Looking at the year-on-year comparison, medium commercial vehicle sales grew by 24.6% to 552 units. Sales in the heavy commercial vehicle segment increased by 6.5% to 327 units, while the extra heavy commercial vehicle showed a slight decline of 1.8% to conclude the month on 719 sales. Bus sales were down by 6.8% to 55 units.

In order to have a healthy and safe vehicle population, trucks need to be replaced every eight to ten years or so “We are very encouraged by the good start to the year,” says Gert Swanepoel, managing director of UD Trucks Southern Africa. “We foresee that certain macroeconomic influencers like the upcoming national elections and lower business confidence might dampen sales up to July.”

Challenging economic conditions

Gert says that 2018’s positive results proved that the truck market is resilient, even amid challenging economic conditions, and that businesses still choose to invest in new vehicles for their fleets. “One concern is that the average age of the local commercial vehicle is too high, at around 12 years currently. In order to have a healthy and safe vehicle population, trucks need to be replaced every eight to ten years or so,” he continues. Gert believes that more and more businesses are turning to modern smart logistics to ensure efficiency, productivity and profitability. Just Right For The Job Milwaukee power tools and Stabila laser measurers have played an integral role in assisting sub-contractor FE Shelv & Rack complete a storage-extension project at the Heineken brewery in the Kliprivier Business Park.

D

istributed exclusively in Southern Africa by Upat, the shelving-and-racking specialist is dependent on the Milwaukee and Stabila products to ensure its solutions are installed accurately and quickly, according to site supervisor, Rocco Potgieter. The project involved the erection of about 150 frames for the expanded shelving-and-racking section.

Built to last

Milwaukee’s tools are built to last, owing to features like compact brushless motors, in addition to gearboxes made from magnesium and durable and heat-resistant material that extends the lifespan of the motor. The tools used by FE Shelv & Rack run the gamut from impact wrenches to drills, screw guns and grinders.

The Powerstate brushless motors are supported by Milwaukee’s Red-Link Plus Intelligence system, an onboard electronic system incorporated in every tool to optimise performance and decrease overheating of the motor and batteries.

This smart system allows for full-cycle communication between the battery, charger and motor and optimises performance by monitoring the internal workings of the tool. In addition, Milwaukee’s Red Lithium battery technology optimises motor performance while under load. This all ensures that the battery can give users a better lifespan, which is on average five times greater than that of other power tools. Maintenance is minimal and mainly preventative, such as checking that all tools are dustfree and that batteries are fully charged. Other features designed to make work both safer and more productive include built-in shock absorbers and anti-kickback or safety clutches. Particular attention has been paid to safety, like dead-man switches, while all battery-operated tools have built-in LED lights to illuminate the work area.

Array of Informative, Inspiring Speakers for Sapics 2019 From the supply chain challenges of United Nations peacekeepers in Somalia, to those faced by the producers of reality TV show “Survivor”, from robotics to risk management, and from Coca-Cola to life-saving medicines, the 2019 SAPICS Conference for supply chain professionals will offer a diverse array of informative and inspiring presentations.

ow in its 41st successful year, the annual SAPICS Conference is Africa’s leading knowledge sharing and networking event for supply chain professionals. Hosted by SAPICS, The Professional Body for Supply Chain Management, it takes place in Cape Town from 9 to 12 June 2019.

The challenges of navigating the last mile in extreme environments will be examined in a presentation by Joseph Roussel, director and private sector engagement group lead at VillageReach Speaker Herbert Pechek, who is the supply chain management principal at the United Nations’ support office in Somalia, was the main architect of the transformation of the organisation’s complex, multidimensional peacekeeping operations into an efficient horizontal supply chain. He will explain to SAPICS Conference delegates how an often seemingly chaotic cluster of tasks has been assessed, analysed, and moulded into a new framework aligned to standardised supply chain processes and practices over the past few years. “My presentation outlines the journey that the United Nations has taken so far and the chal-

lenges it has encountered along the way,” says Herbert, whose career has been spent optimising operations and supply chains in challenging regions like Somalia, Haiti, East Timor and Kosovo.

Impressive logistics Presenter Antoinette Tebbutt is known to the South African public as “Toni from Survivor”. She was the outspoken castaway on Season 6 Survivor South Africa, which was filmed in the Philippines and aired in 2018. Antoinette has worked in logistics for over 15 years and says that as a contestant on Survivor South Africa, she was fascinated by the logistics of it all - from moving contestants and crew around, to transporting and building challenges on different islands, to building a set on the sea for the tribal councils. “All of that was then sent back to South Africa to recreate the set for the live finale show. It is incredible,” she enthuses. One memorable moment saw the show bringing Steers to the contestants in the Philippines as a reward meal. “The Steers team brought all their own equipment (including an ice cream machine), food and even their chef to set up a Steers station in a cove on a stunning uninhabited island for us to enjoy. This really made me realise how vital the supply chain is,” says Antoinette, who will share her experiences and insights at the conference. Supply Chain Today

BAROMETER Professor Lauri Ojala of the Turku University in Finland and an author of the 2018 global Logistics Performance Index (LPI), published biannually by the World Bank, says South Africa’s logistics performance scores in the top fifth in the world. This is right up there with the likes of North America and most of Europe. “South Africa is the only country on the African continent that has reached the top performance levels,” says Prof Ojala. “It has consistently improved over the past few years and does very well when compared internationally.” First published in 2007 the LPI report scores 160 countries on how efficiently their supply chains connect firms to domestic and international opportunities. “The LPI offers two perspectives on a country’s performance,” explains Prof Ojala.

Evaluations

“The domestic LPI offers quantitative and qualitative assessments of a country’s services from logistics professionals working inside the country. This component offers detailed information on a country’s infrastructure, quality of service providers, border procedures, and supply chain reliability. “The international LPI provides evaluations of a country’s services by logistics professionals located outside the country. BAROMETER red tape, but about the reliability of the supply chain and service delivery.” What was quite concerning this time round, was the low number of responses received from African countries which was significantly lower than two years ago which, naturally has an effect on the research. South Africa is the only country that continues to reach the top quintile in this research and Prof emphasizes that it’s not all down to the highest GDP. Germany comes in top even though it does not have the highest GDP but the gap between developed and less developed countries persists. It has not widened or narrowed but there is a gap. “South Africa is an example of a country doing better logistics than expected from its level of GDP per capita. South Africa has consistently performed well as have countries such as Rwanda, Malawi, India, Vietnam and China.”

Developed/undeveloped

China, for the first time, surpassed South Africa in logistics performance. Here, skills remains one of the biggest challenges but this is true for many countries. One of the key findings of this year’s report is that there is currently a labour shortage of logistics professionals in both developed and developing countries. Developed countries, says Prof Ojala, need more blue-collar workers, such as truck drivers, while developing countries are looking for more managerial-level Professor Lauri Ojala, author of the global Logistics Performance Index (LPI) addresses the Transport Forum workers. Although South Africa scored slightly lower than previously, for all intents and purposes it retained its rankings and position as one of the top logistics performers in the world.

Slight regression

Also speaking at the Transport Forum, from the Stellenbosch University’s logistics department, Professor Jan Havenga emphasized that this research is welcome as it is generated internationally rather than locally. “We do measure our logistics costs in South Africa which have been rising over the past few years

and I feel we have regressed ever so slightly in recent years,” adds Prof Havenga. “We are not growing at the same pace as other countries which might not be a problem as yet, but there are some warning lights that we need to take notice of. The lack of a modal shift in the country remains a concern. We have too much cargo on road and we need to address this sooner rather than later,” he concludes. Thanks to its modular design, the Shuttle XP can be adapted to the requisite height both before and after it has been installed and the number of access openings can also be modified. Depending on the height of the room, this means that the size of the footprint can be reduced by at least 85% compared with conventional systems.

Capacity and height

Each tray is automatically scanned with the help of Optiflex technology, which scans the height of the goods stored on top of the tray, and then proceeds to store the tray in the most dynamic location within the unit. Storage of trays is carried out in 25mm increments. The modular design of the system provides virtually unlimited flexibility while making the best use of various room heights. Demetris says, “The unit height can be chosen in 100-millimetre steps so that the Shuttle XP always perfectly meets capacity and height requirements in each case. Even when there is a change of location, it can quickly be adapted to the new environment by adding or removing modules.” Installation is carried out in modular stages and the installation process of a single unit can be done within a few days, using minimal resources. According to Demetris, integrating dynamic storage solutions into manufacturing processes has positive, quick and direct impact on an organisation’s bottom-line.

Procuring these systems is easily justified through improved productivity, recovered floor space and increased pick accuracy gains alone. “Implementing an automated storage system can increase productivity by up to two-thirds,” he states. “Often, facilities implement these systems but maintain current labour levels which results in even higher picking capacities.” It is, however, in the security of the system that even more value lies. Passwordcontrolled and operated by one person, the machine records who used the system and when. This has led to a major reduction in pilferaging in operations where the system has been installed. Dry-liners help out with point-to-point delivery Serco has supplied eight dry-liner bodies for Durbanbased City Logistics to add to its fleet. The line haul division consists of a fleet of more than 500 vehicles operating on a 24-hour basis, providing an inter-depot service for distribution and point-topoint delivery. Serco’s key account manager, Colin Atkinson, says City Logistics required 54 cubic metres of loading space in each of the new bodies. Serco offered the dry-liner body built using Protec steel facings and an injected foam core to provide a durable and lightweight panel construction. “We were thus able to accommodate the customer’s requirements with the 8.25m bodies which were constructed at Serco’s Durban factory and handed over to City Logistics in October,” concludes Colin.
