Merry Christmas Please remember Pro-Life Wisconsin, new and expectant parents and post-abortive moms and dads in your prayers this Christmas season.

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. Luke 2:6-7 Banner_winter_2016_TEST.indd 1

WINTER 2016-2017

The day your prayers saved six babies Six children were saved on one day at this fall’s 40 Days for Life Campaign. Pro-Life Wisconsin State Director Dan Miller was present to witness three of these saves at Affiliated Medical Services on Farwell Avenue in Milwaukee. Here he shares the story from that day: During the day, I was staffing a Pro-Life Wisconsin booth at the Catholic Educators Convention. A good friend stopped, and we talked about 40 Days for Life. My friend, Joe, said he was having trouble convincing his students to attend a

40 Days for Life Vigil, and he was having trouble making it to the sidewalks himself. Joe is a teacher, a coach and a father – that’s three full-time jobs. We talked about how important good leadership is in all three of those roles. I shared some stories of my favorite coaches – who showed us how to play by playing the game with us. I told him that I try to lead by example, too. I don’t tell others to do something I wouldn’t do. Essentially, I told Joe that he had to get to the sidewalks himself if he wanted his students to show up.

After we talked and I left the convention, I learned that three babies had already been saved at the abortion facility on Farwell Avenue. That really got my attention. I decided my time was better spent on the sidewalks with 40 Days for Life than at my desk in the state office. When I got to Farwell Avenue, I immediately saw Joe. He’d taken my words to heart. He said that he didn’t have to be home that afternoon, so he wanted to spend his time praying on the sidewalks. Joe was engaged in a conversation with a pro-abortion activist, who quickly got angry at Joe’s calm demeanor. The activist was literally foaming at the mouth. One of the other sidewalk counselors asked me to step in and end the conversation, but I felt that the Holy Spirit was guiding Joe that day. During Joe’s engagement with the activist, two moms chose life for their preborn children. I was able to witness to one of the moms in Spanish.

After Joe left, a mom came back to Farwell Avenue to tell us she’d changed her mind and chose life after a morning appointment at the facility. She said an “old guy” had convinced her of the reality of her decision. It dawned on me that “old guy” was another friend, Tony, who works with Missionaries to the Preborn. Joe and I talked about the impact he had while on the sidewalks. He thought his conversation with the pro-choice activist was a waste of time. “What we do know is that two of (the moms) chose life while you both were having the conversation. That’s what we’re here for – to save lives. I wouldn’t second guess what played out. Pray about it, and cherish it as God’s gift to you for coming down here today.” Thank you, Lord, for the gift you have given us – the gift of our very lives. Teach us how to become better witnesses to your holy and inspired word. Amen.

Merry Christmas!

As always, we turn outward at Christmas time, rejoicing at what God did for us. He lowered himself to become flesh, to feel our pain as one of us, only to defeat death and allow us to join him in the resurrection. We hope you have the most blessed Christmas.

From the desk of the state director How would you respond if someone said to you, “I am he – the time is at hand”? I think the best way to test any spirit is to give it a healthy dose of the word of God. Jesus foretold of many signs that would shake the people and their nations. Jesus warns us of the end times in the Gospel of St. Luke 21:5-19. I’ve lived on earth 50 years and there were many times I thought for sure that we were going to see Jesus arrive on a cloud – but it hasn’t happened. One thing was missing. “But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you.” Each time I thought the end of times was near, I was nowhere near any sort of persecution. I haven’t experienced any persecution for my faith. I’ve fed the hungry, visited the sick, worked with the homeless, clothed the naked, and buried the dead. They were inherently good things to do, but I wasn’t challenged, admonished or belittled for doing those things. Then I got involved in pro-life work, and it was as if someone turned on a switch. The persecutions began. They were small at first

– friends and fellow churchgoers distanced themselves, sometimes subtly but sometimes overtly. I didn’t understand it. When you go out to the abortion centers, you are literally trying to save a life. Isn’t that a greater good than all those other things? I couldn’t believe anyone in my church would be against what I was doing. Oh – but they were. To add insult to injury – we have politics. As Christians, we should never vote for political candidates who are proabortion, but there are many who do. It makes my soul cry. “Is it my will that a sinner should die, saith the Lord God, and not that he should be converted from his ways, and live?” Ezekiel 18:23 I was mad at God for reminding me of the existence of this passage –

but I know it’s right. My complaining self might say to God, “Do I really have to worship with these people?” Instead, I should be thanking God for the opportunity to have the conversation – to educate on the life issue as only ProLife Wisconsin can. I don’t believe that this form of persecution is a signal that we are in the end of days. To me, any suffering we endure is nowhere close to the suffering of those who shed blood because of their faith in Christ. But, we must always be ready to answer God’s question, “What have you done for the least of my children?” I think many of us could answer that question by saying, “I have done much, Lord” – but I wouldn’t let it rest there. Make sure God knows you! Thanks for supporting Pro-Life Wisconsin with your donations and prayers. We couldn’t do it without you – and wouldn’t ever be able to thank you enough, but we’ll begin by saying it today. Thank you! Through Christ,

Still reasons to hope We have a long way to go in the spiritual and cultural battle against the culture of death. Abortion, euthanasia and discrimination against the disabled and other vulnerable persons are entrenched in our society. But we have a promise from our God. We know we are on the side of justice, victory and truth. “Lo, the day is coming, blazing like an oven, when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire, leaving them neither root nor branch, says the Lord of hosts. But for you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays.” Malachi 3:19-20 In the meantime I want to share three reasons why I am filled with hope, joy and gratitude this Christmas season, even amidst the continued attacks upon the sanctity of human life and dignity. • On Oct. 26, preborn twins were saved from abortion by sidewalk counselors in Milwaukee at the abortion facility on Jackson Street. Praise God! As of my writing this, a total of 76 babies have been saved through sidewalk counselors in Milwaukee this year. This ministry truly saves lives! • A security guard at the Madison Planned Parenthood, an

Banner_winter_2016_TEST.indd 4

Development Director Matt Von Rueden

abortion-only facility, quit his job because he experienced the effects of abortion on women and their children firsthand. He could no longer cooperate with an organization that ends lives. • Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin is so scared about being defunded of taxpayer money that they are sending fundraising letters to entire area codes. State Director Dan Miller got a fundraising letter from them at his home address! They’re lashing out because they realize they’re losing ground to the culture of life. We all know that God works miracles through those who are considered “weakest” or “least” in society, and it’s no exception in the pro-life movement. Strong Christian families displaying the truth of love and marriage, prayer warriors on the sidewalks in front of abortion facilities, those educating youth,

and you who pray at home or in church, contribute to this movement. No matter how small the contribution, God will take it and work miracles. One mind changed, one life saved, is a victory. We don’t know how, when, or if our nation’s leaders will take action, but you can and do take action. You save lives and bring hope through your involvement with Pro-Life Wisconsin. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This Christmas, a very generous family is so committed to cultivating grassroots victories that they want to match, dollar for dollar, all yearend contributions up to $25,000. That means your year-end gift will be doubled instantly! This is a huge opportunity to impact thousands of hearts and lives in 2017. Won’t you please be generous in this season of giving and help us take advantage of this opportunity? Mail in your contribution with the enclosed envelope, go online to ProLifeWI.org, or call Matt Von Rueden at 262-796-1111, ex. 15, to make your best investment today. Be sure to give by Dec. 31 to have your contribution doubled! God bless you and your family this Christmas and in the new year!

innocent human life

Wisconsin needs to stop family planning fraud Wisconsin’s budget is tighter than ever and resources must be allocated prudently and fairly – to the elderly, the impoverished, schools, health care providers, local communities and the list goes on. The governor and state legislators engage in an incredibly painstaking process every two years in their biennial budget deliberations. Hopefully, everyone can agree that there is simply no room for any organization, public or private, to abuse state funding – the people’s money. As reported by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a growing number of federal and state audits have documented that waste, fraud and abuse by state family planning agencies have resulted in losses to the American taxpayer of more than $115 million. Forty-four audits in 9 states found overpayments of over $8 million to Planned Parenthood affiliates alone. Pro-Life Wisconsin, working with ADF attorneys, recently conducted an open records request of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (PPWI). The findings revealed 26 Wisconsin Department of Health Services audits uncovering $43,000 in Medicaid overbilling by PPWI from 2006 to 2012. In August, the DHS

Banner_winter_2016_TEST.indd 5

Legislative Director Matt Sande

released another audit finding that five Planned Parenthood facilities overbilled Wisconsin’s Medicaid program $52,193 collectively in 2014. The audited Planned Parenthood facilities are located in Appleton, Green Bay, Madison and Milwaukee. Three non-PPWI family planning facilities overbilled Medicaid by a total of $11,619. The overpayments are nearly 50 percent of Medicaid payments to the eight audited clinics. Wow! All of the audits described above were limited in scope in terms of location, time frame and type of claims. With this sampling, we can reasonably suspect widespread fraud across Wisconsin’s Medicaid family planning program. Accordingly, Pro-Life Wisconsin is calling for a full audit of all Planned Parenthood

family planning facilities to uncover the actual extent of overpayments. Specifically, we are urging the Joint Legislative Audit Committee to direct the Legislative Audit Bureau to conduct a comprehensive, independent audit of Wisconsin’s Medicaid family planning providers, including Planned Parenthood. The Legislative Audit Bureau is the appropriate agency to conduct the audit. Widely respected by both political parties as an independent, diligent and forthright state agency immune from partisan pressure, the bureau leaves no stone unturned and they “let the chips fall where they may.” All Wisconsin family planning providers, not just Planned Parenthood, must be held accountable for their expenditure of taxpayer dollars through comprehensive audits of their entire facility networks. It is bad enough that family planning funds fuel surgical and chemical abortions in our state. It is intolerable that Wisconsin taxpayers are ripped off in the process.
