POWER BRIEF BY SCOTT MARSHALL ALL PHOTOS BY JAMES DEMITRI

6 PULP pulpmagazine.biz

Sydney designer Michal Nicolas is the creative mastermind behind the men’s sportswear label, teamm8. Launched four years ago, teamm8’s philosophy is inspired by Aussie sporting values of team spirit, determination, strength and masculinity for everyday champions. It’s available locally in retails shops and online at LaJock.com. If Nicolas looks familiar to you, it may be because before launching his fashion empire, he was a popular club performer known for his heartfelt ballads and infectious dance beats. His debut single, a cover of Billie Ray Martin’s “Your Loving Arms,” was remixed by DJ Wayne G and enjoyed global dancefloor success. While developing the album, Nicolas paid the bills working for retail clothing labels. It was on a showroom floor that his life’s dream changed from creating music to starting his own fashion label.

PULP: Now that you’re a successful underwear designer, have you given up your music dreams? MICHAL NICOLAS: I’m a real believer in following your heart and four years ago I made the decision to take a break from my music and follow another one of my dreams, and that was to have my own mens sportswear label. Who knows? Maybe one day I’ll want to do both, but right now I’m putting all my energy into teamm8. Most guys refer to the brand as team-8, but the correct pronunciation is team-mate, correct? A lot of people get confused, but the name is in fact pronounced team-mate, as in a member of a team. Also ‘mate’ in Australia is used to describe a male buddy or a friend. Our name embodies everything about the brand: Australia, the sporting values, the masculinity and the unity. Is it true you started teamm8 from your living room? Yes! In the beginning, I operated and managed every facet singlehandedly. I had a website and two styles of underwear, that’s it. How did you grow so quickly? I was lucky to gain an international market almost instantly. Then, over the next few years, I introduced more underwear styles and then a basic swimwear line. When the swimwear line proved successful, I introduced a test athletic wear line. That’s when teamm8 began shaping into the lifestyle sportswear brand it is today. Do think the success of the Australian brand Aussiebum has helped your brand too? Aussiebum is an absolutely incredible success story and I have a lot of respect for them. What they are doing is fantastic and they have definitely put Australia on the world map as far as mens underwear and swimwear is concerned. I think Australia as a whole benefits from that, including us. Still, I think we do very different things when it comes to our products. What is teamm8 doing to distinguish itself from the rest of the athletic wear collections on the market today? We’re unleashing fashion forward and stylish athletic wear that takes guys from the gym to a lunch date or to just hanging around all day. The videos also get a lot of attention. I’d like to take all the credit for that myself but I can’t! I’m very fortunate to work with a lot of incredible photographers and filmmakers but most of the time I work with James Demitri who is just phenomenal. I love the way his brain works and his eye for sexy, yet tasteful imagery is brilliant.

Where do you find all the sexy models? We’re fortunate that due to our reputation, a lot of models want to work with us. Most of the time I don’t use professional models though because I like that rawness that comes with guys who don’t do it for a living. So our models come from all walks of life. For example our new model Matt, in the Power campaign, was an ex-French Foreign Legion recruit. I met him when he was shopping in our Sydney Studio and I thought he would be perfect for the campaign. Where did you shoot the images? We shot in a dingy, dilapidated basement and asked Matt to channel his days in the Legion to show us the power and strength he holds within. Is ‘Power’ the theme of your summer line? Yes, power is something all men want. June 22 - July 5, 2012 9

COVER teamm8 Are teamm8’s underwear rises lower than most briefs? We do keep a low rise to all our briefs, but not ridiculously low. Comfort is our number one design rule, and if the rise is too low then the brief is just not comfortable to wear all day. What kind of man is teamm8 catering to? The savvy, style conscious guy who has an interest in body image and fashion, but is not obsessed by it. He just wants to feel and look good in his own skin. I always say, ‘At teamm8, you are the star player, and we are your support team.’ How would describe the 2012 summer collection? Definitely our best yet. It’s bold, it’s wearable, and it’s versatile – we’re all very excited about it. The new underwear line is super sexy. We’ve gotten a little darker this season. We certainly noticed that. While most designers went for brighter summer colors, you chose darker, sinister shades.

10 PULP pulpmagazine.biz

I love to play with color. I spend a lot of time trying combinations that feel, and look, fresh and exciting. For this season, I wanted colors that conveyed an even mix of strength and masculine vulnerability. What advantages does a smaller company like teamm8 have over the bigger brands? How is teamm8 using the advantages to its power? Smaller boutique companies like teamm8 enjoy the luxury of dancing to the beat of their own drum. Decisions are made and acted upon quickly. We’re not dragged down by big corporate influences and strategies. We also take big risks. teamm8 was founded on a huge risk. I believe you achieve nothing without playing life that way, and that’s exactly how we approach everything here at teamm8. You work hard, you enjoy the benefits.

Olympic Underwear Sport Some Briefs by teamm8 Designed To Celebrate the Competing Nations of 2012

teamm8 pays tribute to the 2012 Olympic games with it’s new Nations collection of swim and underwear. Produced in striking colors that match the flags of some of the leading countries going for gold – including the USA, Australia and Great Britain – Nations takes the spirit of the summer games into the locker and bedrooms of everyday champions. “We first introduced Nations in 2008 as an underwear to celebrate the Olympic games in Beijing,” explains Michal Nicolas, teamm8’s founder and head designer. “For 2012, we’ve added swimwear. The entire range has become a staple of our brand and is now an important part of our story.” That story began in the living room of Nicolas’ home where with a simple website and two styles of underwear, he launched one of the fastest growing athletic wear collections on the market today. In addition to undies, teamm8 competes in swim, tees and fitness wear. They consistently come out on top by simply putting “play” back in the game. Michael Nicolas explains.

Most men call the brand “Team 8”, but isn’t the correct pronunciation Team Mate?

Michael Nicolas: A lot of people get confused but the name is in fact ‘team mate’, as in a fellow member of a team. In Australia, mate is the iconic word used to describe a male buddy or a friend. Everybody here uses it, even when addressing people they just met. I abbreviated it to ‘m8’. To me, the name embodied everything about the brand: Australian, the sporting values, the masculinity and the unity. What is the ideology of the brand?

We are for everyday champions; for active achievers who tackle life head on. I always say, ‘at teamm8, you are the star player and we are your support team’.

I did! I launched with a website and two styles of underwear, that’s it. That was in 2008 and back then I operated and managed every facet singlehandedly. The brand grew almost instantaneously and over the next few years, I introduced more underwear styles and then a basic swim line. Now you have sweats and tees too.

I was hesitant to go into sportswear because I thought it was an overcrowded market, but I was floored by the reaction of our first athletic wear collection. We learned guys wanted stylish fitness wear that didn’t make them look like they were going to a club or running a marathon. What separates teamm8 from its competitors?

Quality and style. Our athletic wear is great for the gym, a lunch date, or for just hanging around in all day. Is there an advantage to being a smaller company?

Boutique brands enjoy the luxury of dancing to the beat of their own drum. Decisions are made and acted on quickly. We’re not dragged down by corporate influences and strategies. How would you describe the 2012 collection?

Our best yet. This collection remains true to our core design values yet with a little more fun and excitement, especially in the athletic and swimwear. The athletic collection has a slimmer cut than most gear out there.

A slimmer cut is more flattering on most guys. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of skin tight fits. There are very few guys who can or should wear them. But at the same time, I don’t think drowning in your clothes is flattering either.

Was unterscheidet teamm8 von seinen Mitbewerbern? Q

TEAMM8 ZAHLT SEINEN TRIBUT AN DIE OLYMPISCHEN SPIELE 2010 MIT SEINER NEUEN KOLLEKTION “NATIONS COLLECTIONâ€? VON UNTER- UND BADEMODEN. “We first introduced Nations in 2008 as an underwear to celebrate the Olympic games in Beijing,” explains Michal Nicolas, the founder and head designer at teamm8. “The range quickly became a staple and is today an important part of the teamm8 story. For 2012, we’re introducing swimwear to the Nations line, with a brand new cut and design inspired by the London games.” Michal Nicolas launched teamm8 from his living room in 2008 with a simple website and two styles of underwear. At the

time, he operated and managed every facet of the business on his own. That quickly changed as his designs acquired a nearly instantaneous following, especially in the USA. Today, the line has grown to include a wide range of underwear styles and a basic swimwear line. Most recently, the company introduced athletic wear. “Our customer wants stylish gear that makes them stand out from the crowd but doesn’t look like they’re going to a club or running a marathon,” says Nicolas. “Teamm8 offers fashion

forward clothing that guys can take from the gym to a lunch date, or just hang around in all day.” The company adheres to strict team rules. All gear must be timeless, stylish, of top-‐ quality, versatile, sexy, athletic, masculine, and must project confidence. According to Nicolas, teamm8 produces ‘clothes guys wear, not clothes that wear guys.’ “The spring 2012 collection is our best yet,” he continues. “It remains true to the teamm8 core design values but with a little more fun and excitement.” In addition to its Nations line, teamm8 is introducing a new jock strap for Spring 2012, as well as new designs to its swim short line. “Many guys don’t feel comfortable in a swim brief but at the same time don’t want to be bogged down in long and shapeless trunks. Our solution is a fitted shorter-‐

length trunk we call the swim short,” says Nicolas. For the daring, the company is also unveiling the teamm8 swim brief, a flattering square cut, in several new fantastic and vibrant colors. All include teamm8’s infamous detailing on the waistband. “We take big risks at teamm8, but that was how I founded the label, taking a huge risk,” concludes Michal Nicolas. “That and extremely hard work and dedication. I believe you achieve nothing without playing life that way, and that’s exactly how we approach everything here at teamm8. teamm8 pays tribute to the 2012 Olympic games with it’s new Nations collection of swim and underwear. March 30, 2012

player and we are your support team’. Is it true you started from your living room? I did! I launched with a website and two styles of underwear, that’s it. That was in 2008 and back then I operated and managed every facet singlehandedly. The brand grew almost instantaneously and over the next few years, I introduced more underwear styles and then a basic swim line. Now you have sweats and tees too. I was hesitant to go into sportswear because I thought it was an overcrowded market but I was floored by the reaction of our first athletic wear collection. We learned guys wanted stylish fitness wear that didn’t make them look like they were going to a club or running a marathon. What separates teamm8 from its competitors? Quality and style. Our athletic wear is great for the gym, a lunch date, or for just hanging around in all day. Michal Nicolas, teamm8’s founder and head designer. Most men call the brand “Team 8”, but isn’t the correct pronunciation Team Mate? Michal Nicolas: A lot of people get confused but the name is in fact ‘team mate’, as in a fellow member of a team. I always say, ‘at teamm8, you are the star Pg. 22

Is there an advantage to being a smaller company? Boutique brands enjoy the luxury of dancing to the beat of their own drum. Decisions are made and acted on quickly. We’re not dragged down by corporate influences and strategies. How would describe the 2012 collection? Our best yet. This collection remains true to our core design values yet with a little more fun and excitement, especially in the athletic and swimwear. The athletic collection has a slimmer cut than most gear out there. A slimmer cut is more flattering on most guys. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of skin tight fits. There are very few guys who can or should wear them. But at the same time, I don’t think drowning in your clothes is flattering either.

PINK Pink Underwear Not Just for Ladies Anymore

P

ink briefs, for decades the butt of jokes and the joke of butts, has, in the last year, turned into a serious business. Jockey was the first to report that sales of their colored Y-front briefs rocketed by an average of 60% last year – with the baby pink pairs selling more than any other. In all their goofy glory, briefs in bright colors including pink, are undermining the classic white brief’s long-held domination below-the-belt. In fact, while sales of traditional briefs have been down for the last few years, non traditional styles in boxer briefs, bikinis and thong styles have all been way up. It’s not just gay men buying them either. Straight men (and the girlfriend and wives who buy for their men) are buying them at higher rates than ever. However, it is gay men (and celebs like Justin Beiber and Ashton Kutcher) who are the more-daring consumers of new styles – willing to experiment with the newest styles before they become trends. Pink’s popularity makes sense. Pink brightens and warms up pale skin tones. It also contrasts nicely with darker skin. But Nir Zilberman, founder of the online underwear retailer, LAJock.com, thinks the recession may be a factor. 'When the economy’s gloomy, shoppers tend to make small, often unconscious, decisions in their consumer habits and buying fun pink briefs helps lighten their mood and brighten their day.' Here are some of the hot new styles that are tickling men pink this season.

RICKY GERBINO

PINK SWEET BRIEFS TO SAVOR THIS VALENTINE’S DAY

There’s nothing less sexy than a pair of overstretched tighty whities on a dude. But if you check below the belts of most fellas, you’ll ďŹ nd briefs well past their expiration date.

That’s because the average guy alternates between the same ten pairs of drawers. That’s ďŹ ve weeks worth of sweating, stretching and being sat on each year. Factor in about sixty wash cycles, and it’s a miracle they’re still in one piece. Except in many cases, they’re not. Holes, stains and droopy elastic abound beneath most guys’ jeans. They not only look awful, they rob guys of comfort and oftentimes something worse – action! Because who knows when Cupid’s arrow may strike? One brief encounter may just lead to another. So for all you fellas who’ve been hanging onto some roughed up skivvies, do yourself a favor and trade those drab drawers in for something a little fresher – and pinker - this Valentine’s Day. Here are some of our favorites, available now at LaJock.com.

THINK

! K PIN Romantic and intimate, underwear is the ideal Valentine gift. If you’re buying underwear for that special man in your life, here are tips to keep in mind.

THINK COMFORTABLE: When it comes to men’s underwear, it’s all about comfort. Find out what kind of underwear your man likes to wear, whether it is boxer shorts, briefs or boxer briefs. Once you know what kind of underwear he ďŹ nds comfortable, you can start shopping for something special to give him as a Valentine’s Day gift. THINK INDULGENT: Men’s underwear used to only come in basic cotton. Not anymore! Briefs comes in a wide variety of luxury fabrics, including bamboo, lycra, and the combination favored by most, cotton/ elastane. THINK NOVELTY: One of the best ways to buy men’s underwear as a romantic Valentine gift is to look for novelty undergarments for men. A pair of fun briefs printed with hearts, kisses or roses is perfect for Valentine’s Day, and designer underwear in shades of pink or red make great romantic gifts.
