What should I do with my old 401K plan? We’ll help you explore your suitable options

Ask yourself a few questions if you are changing jobs or retiring: Would you benefit from professional advice? Does your 401K plan have adequate investment options to meet your needs? Are you paying attention to notices from your 401K provider? Do you have a risk management process in place for your needs and goals?

Call us today for your complimentary consultation In addition to the significant tax penalties cashing out your 401(k) can result in a serious setback to your retirement savings. Diverting that money away from your retirement savings means that you’ll miss out on the power of compounding. You may need to save a lot more in the future to make up for the compound earnings you might have received if you’d stayed invested. Nicholas J. E

ver since he was young, Chris Paquette had a passion for “working on the water,” as he puts it. Above all else, he grew up with an aspiration to work for himself rather than having a boss tell him what to do for the rest of his life. It was out of these passions and aspirations that he, initially, worked for “a competitor” before deciding to ‘go on his own’ launching a new company in 1997. He continued his growth in 2015 - founding Grosse Ile Marine Works. Grosse Ile Marine Works specializes in everything associated with marine construction. Which includes, but isn’t limited to - dock building, sea walls, boat hoists, dredging, consulting for permits, mobile welding, and salvage. For nonGrosse Ile residents reading this and may

need this kind of work done, Paquette’s business doesn’t work exclusively on the island - they travel out as far as Monroe and Detroit. In Marine Works’ first six years, he and his team have become renowned for being one of the best dock building teams in the Grosse Ile area. Also in those six years, Paquette and co. have continued to embrace and improve modern innovations in their field. “We get better every day… we learn new stuff every day,” he explains. “After you do things so many times, you get better [and] find better ways to do them. Technology is always changing, and there are new designs coming out - different types of sea walls. Technology changes too, so when it does we embrace it and change for the better.” The Grosse Ile native opted to start his business on the island because, “I just wanted to stay and work in my home-

town, make a name for myself here.” Even though he realized his ambition to work on and around the Grosse Ile area - the biggest reason he loves it is because of the local community. “All of the people who live here, the families, how they all come together,” Paquette says. “The people make it special. There’s a lot of ‘word of mouth’ advertisement for us. It’s a small community - everybody seems to know everybody. And it’s just a great place to raise a family.” The biggest takeaway for readers should be that both Chris Paquette and Marine Works represent the hard working, core values, that Grosse Ile was built on. “We’re honest, reliable, and communicate well with customers - that’s what keeps us thriving - because we do excellent work,” says Paquette. “We stand by all the work we do. And we do from scratch - making all of our own parts, our own brackets.” So while you’re imagining summer days with a new pier or dock for your boat(s), among many other services, make sure to contact Grosse Ile Marine Works with any questions or for consultation.

John and Rob’s fathers were best friends, so naturally, the two met around the ages of four or five. Like their parents before them, Rob and John became lifelong friends, even going so far as to join the same industry, with Rob working engaging heavy equipment. Tragically, Rob was killed in a boating accident last August, not long after his wife, Christine, had passed away in September of 2019. In their wake, many people - friends and family to the Chiles’ - have gone out of their way to help the children

recover and ensure that they can continue to live comfortable lives to the best of their ability. Among those friends are John and Joan Hennessey, who, in hopes of giving Christine and Rob’s three children at least a moment’s worth of happiness, treated them to every child’s dream come true: Disney World. “The children mean everything to Joan and I,” explains John. “Joan and I are there, along with a lot of other people, to really make sure that these kids - although they’ve endured a tragedy like no other that I’m familiar with - we’re there to make sure that these kids grow up and achieve the potential that they deserve to achieve. I can tell you, Joan and I both have the same goals, so that the next time we see Rob and Christine, we can say that we did the best that we could.” In highlighting that helping the children is much more of a group effort than just a two-person job between him and Joan, John sends a special shout out to the Grosse Ile community for how they’ve collectively continued to carry Rob’s memory in their actions and when it comes to helping the children. “The Downriver community has shown what they’re really about in the wake of the tragedy of losing Rob, someone who was larger than life for Downriver, and I can tell you that’s what makes it a special place to live. [ Joan and I] are both grateful we’re part of this community.” John adds, “The greatest thing about the Downriver community is the sense of being a true community. When you have tough times in life, the community is there to pick you up, and it’s a true village. It’s really a remarkable attribute that you don’t see in other communities throughout the Metropolitan Detroit area. It’s a really special place.” When it comes to lending a helping hand, John’s goals towards business entwine with the goals he and his team share outside of the workplace. “Our goal is to improve the quality of life for the communities we work in.”

fter coming under new ownership, Lloyd’s Bar and Grill’s frequent diners will be happy to note that everything they loved about the Grosse Ile staple has remained the same with some additional changes they won’t be able to get enough of. For over 30 years, Lloyd’s was owned and run by Steve Doulos and became well-loved by islanders for generations. From its casual bar atmosphere to traditional pub fare, Lloyds is something of an institution on the island, a place everyone knows and can be relied on to satisfy.

When Doulos decided to sell the business, Jeremy Syrocki, along with partners Chris Laura and Francis Brooks, saw a great opportunity, purchasing Lloyd’s in early 2020. Jeremy, who owns two other restaurants Downriver, including Truago in Trenton and Major Biddle’s in Wyandotte, says that his plan for Lloyd’s is very much “restaurant first, bar second.” By this, the Grosse Ile resident says he wants Lloyd’s to be a place for families to come after sports games and school events, as well as for patrons to enjoy watching a game on any of the four big-screen TVs. Following a complete remodel, the eatery now enjoys a brand new interior and features a pizza oven in the restaurant’s center. This allows for a wider range of food choices, including fresh pizza and other Italian options alongside current favorites such as burgers and Cuingan’s shrimp. With the bar being included in the remodel, customers can enjoy various draft beers, wines, and specialty cocktails. Syrocki also introduced online ordering to Lloyd’s website, ensuring that customers can conveniently order without having to pick up a phone. Upon the announcement of this transition in ownership, many patrons took to social media to express their pleasure. “I think people are just excited for a change, and we’re just happy to be a part of it,” says Syrocki. One of the best parts to be sure is that this location will continue to be a place where folks can gather and enjoy a meal together.

Looking forward, Syrocki adds that he hopes to update the outdoor patio soon with décor and half enclosure that will make the space more enjoyable. As COVID restrictions ease, Lloyds will also feature specials, live sports, themed days, and other entertainment.

Lloyd’s Bar and Grill is located at 8961 Macomb St. on Grosse Ile. Hours are 3 p.m. till 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and noon DRINK till 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. For more info, MENU call 734-675-3117 or Enjoy various draft beers, visit www.lloydsgi.com |wines, and specialty cocktails

Meet realtor

Kim Draper Kim Draper has achieved the honor of top producing agent at Island Realty Inc., for the second year in a row. Her career is on the rise as a result of her passion to build her business and desire to help her clients. “Selling real estate is work achieved by determined effort,” Kim said. “The days and hours can be long and tiring, but the payoff of a happy and satisfied client is so very rewarding.” It was Kim’s mindset that helped launch her career into real estate; believing she could do anything as long as there was passion, drive, focus and support. “It was this mentality that motivated me when I first changed my career,” Kim said. “I continue to stay focused on my goals and I have a great team of supporters within my family, my office, and even within other agents. It makes a huge difference in business success when there is support around you.” The two things Kim is most passionate about right now is helping her clients and continuously learning. “It’s the people that I meet and the life stories they share with me,” Kim said. “I love, love, love that about my job! I also love that I’m always learning. Every day I wake up with hustle in my blood and I’m habitually in competition with myself to strive for greatness.”

The difference is in the details

s of this writing, the Michigan Read by Grade Three law is in effect for the 20202021 school year. Families were given a reprieve last year due to Covid-19 but currently the plan is to move forward with the law. So, what does that mean for our current third graders? For the current school year, all components are in full effect which includes but is not limited to the retention of students reading significantly below grade level. Which means, grade three students reading more than a grade level below the benchmark by the end of third grade are at risk for the mandatory retention rule. A quick re-cap of the RBG3 law. The law requires Districts to have at least one initial and one extensive assessment from the MDE approved list. The purpose is to identify students in grades K-3 who need an Individual Reading Improvement Plan or IRIP. The first, initial, screening must be given within the first 30 academic days, under Return to Learn it must be given within the first nine weeks of school. Under that Return to Learn, a student exhibiting a reading deficiency and requiring an IRIP requires Districts notify parents or legal guardians no later than 30 days of the assessment. At this point in the school year, these students should have already received a notification from the school and the have had implementation of a Read at Home plan in coordination with additional support during the school day in place.

expert Advice

Families of students identified for retention will be notified by June 1st however there are Good Cause Exemptions that can be requested to prevent the mandatory retention. Parents who aren’t in agreement with retention should request a meeting with their child’s school to file for the Exemption within 30 days of receiving a notice regarding the potential retention. To support your child’s reading and writing at home, have books throughout the home and in a special place. Have fun with reading and writing – write letters to friends and family, especially those we’ve been unable to see in person due to Covid-19, and let your child see you reading! Provide a place to write, a table or a desk. Talk about why writing is important as you do things, like making a grocery list. zines, newspapers or online. Identify and focus on new words whenever possible. Based on the context clues, the words around the new word, what do they think it means? Most importantly, remember to be patient. For children, sounding out words can be a lengthy and often frustrating process, give them the time to do so. You can help by identifying or pointing out “chunks” they may know or helping them by breaking the word into smaller pieces, especially chunks they know. Lastly, make connections to the reading. If the children in the story did this, what do you think you could do? Find what your child is interested in and provide books about those topics.

Down River Pest Control PEST CONTROL FOR COMMERCIAL,

I

RESIDENTIAL, INDUSTRIAL CLIENTS

t’s around this time each year that a common pest returns to plague Michigan and especially Downriver homes. Carpenter ants may seem like a small nuisance, but left untreated can become incredibly disruptive. “Generally in the fall people will have ants. They might try a home remedy and think they’ve gotten rid of them, but ants can go dormant for 6-10 week, then they come back and generally they come back stronger and in larger numbers,” explaines Down River Pest Control Owner, Kim Bingham. Kim, along with co-owner and expert technician, Kenny Bingham, have over three decades pest control experience,

and technician Hernan Mendoza has six, ensuring that no matter how prevalent a bug problem is, they’ll get the job done right, saving you time, money, and a headache down the road when those homemade solutions don’t work out. As a preventative, Down River Pest Control encourages an exterior perimeter treatment that’s effective against a variety of ants and other common insects, “but treating the exterior is not going to fix any established indoor infestation,” says Kim. That’s when it’s time for indoor treatments, guaranteed to rid the home or business of pests. Down River Pest Control is a local, family-owned business offering quick and reliable service at a competitive price since 1970. They service residential, commercial, and industrial clients across all of Wayne and parts of Monroe and Oakland Counties. If you suspect you have a pest problem, call Kim for a free estimate.

study recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the use of physical therapy as an alternative to corticosteroid injectionfor treatment of knee osteoarthritis resulted in substantially greater benefitat 1 year. The results of this study could be an important discussion point with your medical provider when deciding best treatment options. “Physical therapy is superior to glucocorticoid (steroid) injections for stiff and aching knees,” says Dr. Gail Deyle, senior author of the study. The research directly compared physical therapy with glucocorticoid injections to determine which was better primarily at one year but also in the short term. Deyle, who is a professor with Baylor University Graduate School, states “ Our results leave no doubt that physical therapy should be strongly considered for patients with knee osteoarthritis. They will clearly benefit from a physical therapist’s handson treatment and decision making for exercise and activity selection.” Osteoarthritis of the knee is common world-wide and is a leading cause of disability, accounting for substantial health-

care costs. While osteoarthritis of the knee is primarily a chronic disorder associated with aching and stiffness of the joint, it can clinically present with acute episodes leading patients to visit primary care and emergency department physicians for timely relief, which then often lead to advanced imaging to determine “what is wrong inside their knee.” Providers commonly use glucocorticoid injections to help patients through this acute phase. “This is an important point to guide patients to a physical therapist,”

says Deyle. These injections may provide short-term relief, but they also increase the risk of infection and accelerated aging of the joint, including fractures of the joint surfaces. Throughout this process, most patients are not sent for consultation with a physical therapist. In fact, as little as 10 percent of patients with knee osteoarthritis receive treatment from a physical therapist for their knee osteoarthritis in the 5 years prior to total knee replacement surgery. Physical therapy is simply not offered as

Dedicated to making your time with us extraordinary often as glucocorticoid injections for knee osteoarthritis despite study findings over the past 20 years that physical therapy treatment strategies reduce pain, improve function, reduce medication use including opioids, and reduce the incidence of surgery. In this study, the researchers found that physical therapy provided short-term benefit that was equal to the higher risk steroid injection at 4 and 8 weeks, but then substantially greater benefit from physical therapy at 6 months and one year. Patients receiving physical therapy had overall less pain and stiffness and performed better on functional tests. The physical therapy strategy used in this study consisted of manual physical therapy with reinforcing exercise including ongoing guidance to help patients find appropriate types and amounts of physical activity. The hands-on manual treatment facilitated painless performance of reinforcing exercises, translating quickly to less pain with daily activity and home exercise. Patients typically left the initial physical therapy treatment session feeling less pain and stiffness in their knee, while injection patients needed several days of rest and strategies for pain control from the injection. When physical therapy offers better outcomes with less risk, it is comparable to an investment strategy that provides higher return with less risk. “The question becomes ‘why not’ rather than ‘why’,” says Deyle.
