nited Churches Credit Union of Taylor has no shortage of services, which include savings, checking, and IRA accounts along with certificates of deposit. “We have a full array of loan products including auto loans, boat loans, recreational vehicles, and motorcycles,” says CEO Susan Smith. “We offer fixed rate and variable rate home equity loans, home improvement loans, and personal loans.” This year United Churches Credit Union introduced a new loan product called the “payday bridge” loan. “It is a much more affordable alternative to other payday lending products out in the market,” explains Smith. And the services don’t stop there. Smith says her credit union offers a Visa credit card with no annual fee. “Members can

purchase Visa gift cards and Visa TravelMoney reloadable cards here at the credit union,” she says. “We also sell postage stamps, accept water bills, and offer notary service to our members for a small fee.” United Churches Credit Union was chartered in March 1957 and is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Smith has been with the credit union for 30 years, and her assistant manager has worked there for over 20 years. Smith adds, “This credit union is unique in that we are a faith-based financial institution. Our field of membership consists of 26 area churches representing various denominations. We serve the parishioners and family members of these congregations. I believe that is what sets us apart from any other financial institution.” n

ownriver Community Federal Credit Union brings simplicity to the financial world. “We make money simple,” says Mark W. Tremper, Vice-President of Marketing & Community Development. “Our mission is to provide simple access to the resources our members need to accomplish great things in every stage of their lives.” Besides simple access to resources, Downriver Community Federal Credit Union, a full-service member-owned financial institution, offers deposit products including savings, checking, and certificates as well as loan options including auto, mortgage, credit cards, business loans, and commercial mortgages. “Our most popular services include checking account, auto loans, and commercial mortgages,” Tremper says. In addition, Downriver Community Federal Credit Union launched a monthly “Grow Your Business Workshop” series in February 2008 as a way to “help people grow their business in the face of a challenging economic environment,” according to Tremper. The series features a variety of topics, presented by local, national, and international personal and business growth experts. Tremper notes that his credit union members “have easy access to our entire staff, from our president/CEO, management team, member services representatives, and tellers. We are committed to doing what is best for our members and not just what the guidelines dictate.”

He adds, “We are a locally-based financial institution serving the Downriver area for 75 years. We provide a variety of ways to build up our community, from financial literacy and bully prevention programs in the schools, to workshops that help people grow their business and involvement in a variety of business and chamber organizations.” And in the spirit of the holidays, Downriver Community Federal Credit Union invited children to visit for a picture and chat with Santa. n

inancial education is important for the entire banking community, and Advantage One Credit Union of Brownstown is taking strides to make financial information available to its customers. Recently the credit union has focused on cultivating the services it can offer local businesses. In 2015 Advantage One added business development to its list of services. “Our goal was to establish long-lasting relationships with both current and new ‘preferred partners’ across the Downriver area,” says Jennifer Workman, who serves as the credit union’s business development director. “The foundation of the program centers on products and services already available at the credit union, such as our credit score analysis program and referral program,” she continues. “From there we added financial education to the mix and the convenience of delivering our services to a preferred partner’s place of business. This allows local employers, regardless of their asset size or employee count, a completely free benefit for their staff.” Workman adds that the credit union’s most utilized program is its financial edu-

cation services. “We are finding that companies really enjoy the ability to help their employees at no cost,” Workman says. “Through these financial seminars, we are helping to improve the quality of life of employees around the Downriver area.” While the business development function has only existed at the credit union since 2015, Advantage One has served the community since 1952. “Our credit union continues to reach unprecedented levels in net worth, overall earnings, and deposit growth,” Workman notes. “In a very competitive market, we continue to achieve record growth in all areas, including a 4% membership growth this year.” n

dvia Credit Union has a simple and successful mission: to provide financial advantages. The financial institution, which has local branches in Brownstown and Southgate, designed its personal and business-related financial solutions to allow clients easy access to both making more money on deposits held and to borrowing money when needed. According to Nancy Loftis, VP of Marketing & Public Relations, “Advia is working to make financial access simple with 24 hour online and mobile banking, online applications and area locations.” Likewise, the credit union helps its members generate more from their accounts. “Advia provides top rates on checking, money market savings, and certificates of deposit,” Loftis says. “Our financial advisors help with both short- and long-term goals by helping members navigate insurance and investment options.” She continues, “We offer a variety of low rate mortgage loans, vehicle and RV loans, and other personal loans and lines of credit.” The most popular service members choose to utilize includes a checking with debit card to make everyday purchases. Most members choose the credit union’s Advantage Points Visa Credit Card, which offers rewards for every purchase along with low interest rates. “Advia is working to make sure that members truly experience financial advantages by offering easy access to financial solutions that help them save time and money,” Loftis adds. Branch staff and managers in Southgate and Brownstown are committed to helping members by playing active roles in their communities, including its current volunteer event, the Salvation Army’s Toy Shop in Wyandotte to support local children. n

eal Credit Union has a simple philosophy: provide complete financial products and services for hardworking Americans. According to Lisa Fawcett, Zeal’s Vice President of Marketing, “Sure we have the typical savings and checking accounts, but ours are designed specifically for hard working people and come complete with online banking, a mobile app, and mobile deposit to make banking easy.” Zeal also offers low rate loans for anything people need, such as cars, homes, home improvement, vacations, and personal expenses. Fawcett says that Zeal’s recently launched a service that is quickly becoming very popular. “Our online account opening makes it easy for people to open

a brand new account at Zeal Credit Union or add another account to their existing membership,” she explains. “This works well for busy people who don’t have time to come into a branch.” So why would a person shopping for financial services choose Zeal? “We share our members’ good character, strong work ethic and passion,” says Fawcett. “When members bank with us, we promise to always put their interests first.” The credit union was founded over 60 years ago but only changed its name to Zeal just over two years ago. “We wanted to find a name that better fit who we are and who we serve,” Fawcett adds. “The definition of zeal is ‘a passionate devotion to a cause.’ Well, our cause is our members.” n
