You have done some interesting research that has gotten some international interest. My research is about oral sex. I got interested in it because there has been so much press coverage on, what has been called, the “adolescent sex epidemic”. The tag line that is being used is: “oral sex has become as inconsequential as a goodnight kiss!” A line inferring sexual promiscuity among females. Is this a subject that research has dealt with in the past at all? There is not much research on oral sex and there is certainly very little about their attitudes towards it. That is what I did my study on. What did you find of interest in your research? I found a couple of things that really interested me. In my sample, of 1825 year old females, a full quarter of them had not engaged in oral sex or vaginal intercourse. I think that is very important to highlight as it hasn’t exactly been highlighted in the media coverage of my study. What’s the main thing that you are hoping people understand from your research thus far? The main point is the same safe sex message that we have been pushing for years with regard to vaginal intercourse, has not been promoted with respect to oral sex. That’s something that as sex educators, we need to begin talking about seriously. What has been some of the feedback outside of academia regarding your research? Well, my husband likes to talk about how I research oral sex and he tells people I am a “blow job expert”, needless to say, there is a little bit of a shock value to it. It is important to take it seriously but at the same time still be able to poke fun at it when need be and have real conversations about it.
