1.2. Plural of nouns

Countable nouns can be singular or plural. The plural form of most nouns is formed by adding -s or -es: table + -s tables boy + -s boys Nouns ending in -f or -fe, often change -f into -v: knife + -s knives leaf + -s leaves Nouns ending in -ch, -sh, -ss, -o and -x normally take -es: watch + -es watches dish + -es dishes kiss + -es kisses potato + -es potatoes box + -es boxes Nouns ending in a consonant and a -y change y into i: factory + -es factories BUT Kennedy + -es Kennedys Some nouns have irregular plural forms which have to be learnt by heart. deer – deer man – men child – children tooth – teeth Also, there are nouns that have kept their original Latin/Greek plural forms. phenomenon – phenomena medium – media crisis – crises fungus – fungi
