GRAZING VARIETIES

FODDER BEET

Fodder beet is potentially the highest yielding forage crop that can be grown in the UK, in terms of energy yield per hectare, and the cheapest forage crop in terms of cost per unit of energy produced. Higher stocking rates can be achieved compared to any other forage crop (subject to site suitability).

Fodder beet has multiple uses. It can be grazed in situ for cattle finishing or outwintering in-lamb ewes; or lifted as a replacement for cereals in rations or for anaerobic digestion.

The varieties in ProCam’s fodder beet portfolio are carefully selected from a range of breeders to ensure optimum performance and reliability for our customers. Varieties are assessed for several years before they become commercially available through both breeder trials and our own in-house trials.

Lactimo is a low dry matter variety (13–14%) that’s highly palatable. Its softer root and high percentage of root above ground make it ideal for sheep grazing or young cattle.

Geronimo is a higher yielding medium dry matter variety (15–16%). It sits out of the ground more, making it ideal for grazing cattle for high intakes. Geronimo can be lifted and fed whole, but won’t store as well as higher dry matter types. Using a beet bucket is best in this feeding regime as it allows lifting on a hand-to-mouth basis.

LIFTING VARIETIES

Summo is a high yielding medium-high dry matter variety (19%). It has very uniform roots and strong foliar growth. Summo can be fed whole or chopped and stores well.

Gahan is a very high dry matter (22%) dual purpose variety, suited to both forage and AD. It has very high yields with relatively clean roots. Large tops help protect the crown when harvested later. Gahan is also rhizomania tolerant.

If we put a value on the 14t at £35/t ex farm = +£490/Ha Output

“Active Boost” primed seed produces more uniform stands with a more consistent beet size, making overall management of the crop easier. Variability of yields is reduced and average yields are higher. Yield results in our annual trials have been impressive, with Active Boost increasing root yield by circa 2t DM/ha. This yield increase results from faster and more uniform germination and in-field establishment, leading to higher plant populations and earlier canopy closure.

Five years data from Field Options trials near Hereford show the value of using Active Boosted seed as opposed to standard seed.

Over the four years, the variability of yield is reduced, stands are

Lactimo and Geronimo are both available with “Active Boost” seed technology.
