SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS

November 2022

Welcome to the November issue of Benchmark Magazine

Aquestion I've heard a few times this week is: Are we near the end of the year already? I don't know about you, but 2022 has definitely gone very fast for me.

I was thrilled to see the number of votes for the Benchmark Innovation Awards 2022 (BIA22) more than triple this year. We appreciate your input and support and want to connect with you even more.

You voted for the winners of the Benchmark Innovation awards 2022 (BIA22). You, our reader, are the pulse of the industry. We want to hear more from you.

Have you connected with us on social media lately?

Here is where to find us:

• Facebook: @benchmarkmagazineonline

• Twitter: @benchmarkmag

• Instagram: @benchmarksmartsolutions

• LinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/benchmark-magazine

Every organization needs to make informed decisions about improvements, enhancements, and changes. Therefore, they need as much relevant information as possible to evaluate and discuss these opportunities. This is why we want to share your stories, news, and advancements at Benchmark Magazine.

One of the innovation awards highlighted by the BIA22, is that voters value products and solutions that resolve their security needs. For example, IPS Securiton's IPS NextGen VideoAnalytics V.13 now offers a streamlined licencing system and combines video analytics for fixed cameras. The fact that IPS NextGen V.13 is the winner of the BIA22 Analytics and Software innovation category demonstrates that the solution solves a need in the market. The same goes for COSMO, runner-up in the same category. COSMO PSIM+ provides an alternative to traditional command and control centres by allowing companies to manage data from

dispersed security devices and information systems agnostically.

Another winner of the BIA2022, in the Alarm/Detection category, is John Cotrols's Qolsys IQ Panel, which is now in version four. With the IQ Panel 4, you can control wireless legacy devices, long-distance encrypted PowerG sensors, Z-Wave locks, thermostats, and even Z-Wave locks remotely powered by Alarm.com.

Finding the right solution for your security needs can be achieved if you are clear about your focus. For example, is your goal to improve security in your organization or your client's organization? Is safety the priority? Do you need to enhance your customer's experience?

Inner Range won the Innovation Company of the Year Award at the BIA22. One of the company's USPs is its ability to offer flexibility, including integration with 3rd party products. Inner Range systems have standard integrated intruder alarms that meet Grade 3 requirements.

At Benchmark Magazine, we strive to bring you some of the answers to your security needs. The winners of the BIA22 have demonstrated that innovation is the way forward. Read more here.

The security industry needs to continue having visionary leaders ready to dare. An example is Clive Mason, Webeye's founder and CEO. Clive Mason has built his company Webeye Limited from the ground up. He had an insight into crime after working as a police officer for 27 years and later on as a police detective.

The company went from being a distributor to developing software, its main solution being the scalable and flexible webeyeCMS. Now Webeye is venturing into manufacturing with the soon-to-come Vigileyez.

Winners of the Benchmark Innovation Awards 2022 are announced!

Benchmark Innovation

Awards are focused on innovation in the areas of technologies, solutions, services and products that provide solutions in the security sector.

In today’s security solutions market, technology innovation is the driving force behind the success of products and services.

We have had a significant number of votes from our readers for this year’s awards; as a result, we have included the winners in each category and the companies that came in second place.

The voting for the Benchmark Innovation awards is officially closed, and we are ready to celebrate the 2022 winners and the companies that came in second place.

Since the end of the lockdown, businesses have not entirely gone back to being ‘as usual.’ As a result, security industry leaders have had to come up with strategies, new services and products to achieve businesses’ resilience in the long term. Now more than ever, security businesses need to consider the macro trends driving growth when they plan for the future.

Along with staff shortages, a lack of new trainees entering the industry, and financial uncertainty, 2021 and 2022 have been years of supply chain disruption. Ninety-four per cent of Fortune 1000 companies have experienced supply chain disruptions as a result of Covid19, according to Accenture.

Today we live in a world where change has been the name of the game, and adaptation has happened more often than not through innovation. The use of technology in the workplace and at home has forced businesses and individuals to rethink their relationship with technology.

Many businesses have adapted to a more flexible way of working, thus resulting in an

Smart Access Solution for Collaborative Workspaces with Paxton10

Chiswick Works is a collaborative community workspace based in Southwest London, UK. It is managed by X+Why, which offers flexible daily passes for collaborative workspaces and short or long-term memberships for dedicated offices. Chiswick Works is part of a larger group of similar flexible offices nationally.

This flexible office building is part of a larger network of similar office facilities across the country.

X+Why’s management team needed to upgrade the outdated and varied access control systems across their UK sites. They aimed to create a centralised system that could be remotely managed from anywhere in the country. As a result, their customers will have greater convenience and flexibility, while their site managers will have greater ease in granting access.

They currently have 50 doors at Chiswick Works, and 117 active members need varying levels of access, depending on their X+Why membership.

Trey Nelson-Campbell, Community Manager for X+Why, oversees the implementation of a Paxton10, a combined access control and video management system. It is being installed over time across all the company’s sites.

Trey explained: “The most important thing we wanted with the new system was for our clients to have the best possible service and

Redaction is the name of the game to stay compliant

Companies holding personal information about individuals, whether it’s images or other data not meant for public consumption, are mandated to comply with data protection laws. Facit Data Systems’ business protects people’s privacy and helps companies meet compliance standards.

Serious consideration should be given to the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The new regulation imposing strict rules over sharing personal data took effect on 25 May 2018 – replacing the 1995 data protection directive.

Companies that breach data protection laws in the UK are fined up to £17.5 million or 4% of their global turnover. As a result, businesses must invest in smarter data security solutions to protect their employees, customers, and reputations.

To be compliant, companies need to be able to redact information. Redacting means hiding or removing sensitive data so that footage or documents can be shared without risking a data breach. Video redaction, in particular, is the process of altering a video clip to mask the identity of specific and usually sensitive objects within the video frame. This could include

How to be a visionary in the security industry

Webeye was founded in 2011 by Clive Mason, a well-known security professional, the company’s CEO and still very much involved in the company’s development, strategy and vision. We interviewed Clive to learn more about the company’s evolution to what it is today. He also gives us an exclusive insight into the company’s new product, Vigileyez.

Withsafety and security as the focus of its business, Webeye provides hardware and software security solutions that include CCTV, intruder alarms, and visual verification systems. This company is primarily involved in the rapid deployment and temporary security markets.

There is a cloud-based alarm and monitoring platform at the heart of Webeye’s security solution, webeyeCMS, that can integrate thirdparty applications to suit individual business needs as part of Webeye’s security solution. Soon, webeye will also become a manufacturer of a next-generation battery-operated, 4G enabled video alarm transmission system that uses radio technology that will be fully batteryoperated, 4G connected, and fully wireless.

As part of our support for its customers, Webeye has several specialist teams not only in the area of software development but also in the area of training and customer service and support.

Whether it is a DIY security system or a professionally monitored security system centred around a rapid deployment project, Webeye offers a one-stop shop that includes visual verification, alarms, and all of the software that receives it to improve the effectiveness of security.

Benchmark Magazine: Can you describe your company in three words?

Clive Mason: Innovating the future

BM: How many people do you employ today?

CM: We currently have 23 employees.

BM: How have your methods for doing

12 PROFILE

business, or the product(s) or service line(s) you market, changed since the inception of your business?

CM: Our company started as a distribution company and has developed into a software house that integrates the products we distribute with the software we produce. Our company evolved into a turnkey solution provider, manufacturing, developing, integrating, hosting, supplying, and providing all the products and services needed to install a rapidly deployable security solution confidently.

BM: What are the company’s flagship products?

1. The webeyeCMS video alarm receiving handling management platform.

2. In the works is the Vigileyez solution, a fully battery-operated, wireless radio, video alarm transmission system. This camera features a battery-powered 4G and Wi-Fi alarm panel that can connect to 32 devices. This includes a 5MP outdoor camera, two indoor badge readers, smoke detectors, door contacts, and sirens; indoors and outdoors control 32 devices with one central alarm panel.

3. The webeyeGO box and security tower, complete with solar, allowing 24/7, 365-day coverage of live CCTV with alarms, without the need for the main power source.

BM: What is the company’s greatest strength?

CM: Having a full complement of manufacturing, development, and supply is one of the greatest assets in our market, as this allows us to compete with our competitors on a level playing field.

BM: What is its most significant problem or weakness, and what’s the solution?

CM: The products are next-generation and futuristic, so educating prospects and clients have been challenging. This could be considered our biggest weakness. To enhance the way we portray our vision, we have focused on a clear outgoing message, using a combination of different media channels, trade shows and training to reach the broadest audience possible.

BM: What is the company’s long-term strategy?

CM: Our long-term strategy is to become the leading provider of cloud-based video alarmreceiving software and to continue to develop integrations between hardware we may create and third-party hardware that may be developed in the future.

BM: What is your biggest complaint about the industry, and how does your company address this problem?

CM: Our clients complain that their clients want

to pay as little as possible for security, so to put it bluntly, it’s a grudge purchase. Webeye offers a low-cost, no upfront payment, pay-as-you-go alarm platform, which has to be one of the most cost-effective worldwide. In addition, it integrates cost-effective hardware without compromising quality.

BM: What will be the most significant security trends by 2023?

CM: There is no doubt that the move to video will be the most significant trend for this year and many years to come, and it will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. In addition, the use of the cloud is becoming ever more frequent, and the move to this environment will dominate the next decade.

About Clive Mason

Clive Mason has genuine insight into security and safety. He was a police officer for 27 years, carrying out several roles, including the first response. Later he became a police detective working on more serious crimes and then on a proactive undercover burglary squad. In his last role before becoming an entrepreneur, Clive was seconded to the information network services department. As a project manager, he procured and implemented the role of the forces’ criminal intelligence system.

Clive says. “I’ve always been interested in technology, particularly those involving security and the use of CCTV to identify criminals at the point of committing the crime rather than after the event,” and adds, “I don’t have much time for hobbies, but I do like travel, and I am fortunate to have a vacation home in Florida USA.”

Clive’s day-to-day involvement within the company consists of engaging/assisting in writing legal contracts, strategic and financial meetings, and monitoring activities. In addition, he helps and advises the Managing Director of the business, Duncan Weir.

The surveillance system also needed to be flexible enough to scale as the airport grows.

Mubin Cakmak, CEO of system integrator Bes Teknoloji, explains, “The safety of passengers and staff is vital to the airport experience.

Recognising this, the Rize–Artvin Airport security team wanted to install a comprehensive and reliable video surveillance solution that also worked seamlessly with access control, perimeter protection, and the announcements system.”

Why was Wisenet chosen?

Hybrid Wireless Fire Detection could save lives

June 14th marked the fifth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire disaster in West London. The fire broke out at the 24-storey block of flats in North Kensington, started on the fourth floor and rapidly spread across the building. It burned for 60 hours before it was extinguished. It killed 72 people and injured 70 others. Of the rest of the residents, 223 managed to scrape physically unharmed but mentally scarred.

The tragedy, and subsequent reviews, demonstrated that the UK’s existing fire safety programme for high-rise properties was ‘not fit for purpose.’

It’s been reported that over 400 high-rise blocks were identified as having unsafe aluminium composite material (ACM), a type of external cladding similar to that which Grenfell Tower had and caused the cataclysm.

Waking Watch schemes have been implemented in any buildings identified as fire risks due to cladding. The schemes must, at present, remain in place until the cladding is removed.

These Waking Watch schemes involve trained staff continually patrolling the floors and exterior perimeter of a building to maintain the safety of its occupants from fire. The high operational costs and pressures of

Seeing the unseen with Hikvision HeatPro thermal cameras

Environmental conditions are not always ideal for traditional security cameras, especially in case of scenarios where perimeter protection and fire detection are needed. What do you do when your images are affected by factors like darkness, foliage, snow or fog, which can obscure objects or people that should trigger a legitimate alarm. One very effective solution is the use of thermal signals.

Hikvision’s HeatPro thermal cameras is the winner of the Benchmark Innovation Awards 2022 in the Surveillance Innovation (CCTV) category. Now on its third generation, the updated cameras include added-value features and a low installation cost.

Azena’s open platform for smart cameras keeps growing. It currently offers more than 100 video analytic applications in its Application Store. The ready-to-use apps offer video analytic solutions for retail, manufacturing and logistics, healthcare, parking, stadium, and oil and gas environments.

Given its versatility and reach, it’s not surprising that the Azena platform is a finalist in the Benchmark Innovation Awards 2022 for the Analytics and software innovation category.

Apps are created by third-party developers and are available in the Azena Application Store, where users can download and install the apps onto their cameras with just a few clicks. This enables users to create video analytics solutions as individual as in their organisation. It allows them to react to changes quickly or gradually pivot and extend their camera system to ensure they are getting the most out of it.

The platform allows multiple apps to be run in tandem on the same camera or different sets of apps on different cameras. Camera functionally can also be changed or extended
