Upside-Down Continium Requalification of mono-functional mobility infrastructures in support of urbanity

Upside-Down Continium

Upside-Down Continium

UPSIDE-DOWN CONTINUUM is an urban design project that focuses on transitoriented development, aiming to reconnect Toronto’s Old City to the lakefront. This was achieved by erasing gaps created by mono-functional infrastructure and giving them new functions, as well as using them to prepare the city core for it’s future doubling of its population. Using three strategies, which consider three axises: longitudinal, transversal, and vertical; the project focuses on the urban, neighbourhood, and architectural scales, to explore new uses for existing infrastructure.

THE GREEN GRID HOUSING - LA ROBERTSAU

Undergraduate 2 - Instructor: Markus Hastenteufel collective housing - 32 units Partners: Ballet Marie - Boos Pauline

THE GREEN GRID is a housing project that utilizes a block typology to generate a porous design that allows us to play with inbetween spaces, limits, and thresholds. Each block contains shared amenities for inhabitants, aiming to build a community that benefits the neighbourhood with spaces for local associations and social events.

COUPER A TRAVERS CHAMPS URBAN STUDIO - ILLZACH 2030

Master 1 - instructor: Jaureguiberry Anne partners: Foissotte Thomas - Vergobbio Robin

This project aims to preserve agricultural fields in an urban context by diversifying the monocultural production and make them beneficial for inhabitants. It takes into account the field transition process, the three zones to densify, and the periphery of the agricultural park. The areas between the farmlands and urbanized areas are transformed in public promenades, sports fields, shared gardens, and housing, to avoid sprawl on the preserved land. The overall goal is to invite local communities to recognize the value of the agricultural area as a place for nourishment and leisure.

As a connector between the Ginza Financial District and a residential area, this mixedused building proposes a leisure and cultural break in everyday life, proposing programs for a population of all ages, that could be used day and night.

This project led us to ask a question about the organizational principle of the programs: what if the program became more relaxing as you ascended the building, leaving the more frenetic experiences close to the ground level?
