22 February February2014 2014

Although snow still covers the golf course and temperatures are below freezing, there is still outdoor activity at Meridian Hills. The platform tennis season is in full swing with increased participation this year by both women and men, enjoying a full schedule of regular play and upcoming tournaments. If outdoor vigorous exercise is not your preferred method of warming up, Ludo Aaron can arrange access for indoor tennis workouts. During the January closure weeks, normal clubhouse repairs and deep cleaning projects were completed. Also, a program of larger renovation projects began with replacing the carpeting in the Bill Smith living room with hardwood flooring to provide a warmer look in that Club President space. Next, the first major renovation of the pro shop in twentyeight years was started with complete demolition of the interior space followed by a rebuild from the bare walls. Be sure to see the completely new look of the pro shop when it reopens in March. Along with the living room and the pro shop, additional clubhouse renovation work will commence soon, which might cause minor disruption in the normal operation of our clubhouse. More windows will be replaced on Mondays when the club is closed and weather permits; however, if problems do develop, some spaces possibly could be unusable for short periods. You may be surprised at the club’s new changes, changes that update the club’s appearance while maintaining its comfortable ambience. Winter is an opportune time to invite guests to enjoy the many dining options at Meridian Hills. Chef Joe Miller and his staff are constantly adjusting the menu offerings to provide top quality food and service. Also, Jessica Bex is always ready to welcome your guests and continue discussions with potential new members. Additionally, when the weather warms, Jessica will coordinate activities with Jack Barber, our new golf ambassador, to provide information about golf at Meridian Hills. Besides Jack, Ludo Aaron is available to work with Jessica to meet and explain our club’s tennis program. The good work by our professional staff and the membership committee yielded a strong flow of new members last year; those results need to be duplicated this year to insure financial strength, and what better time to bring guests than during or after the new enhancements to our clubhouse. Contacts provided by current members continue to be the best source of new members, so please promote the club. Simply let Jessica know about interested prospective members and she will do the rest! I hope to see you at our renovated club house, your “home away from home” in February and March along with your families and friends. Sincerely, Bill Smith

Message from theGeneral Manager

During the two week closing of the club, a number of projects took place. New flooring was installed in the Living Room, a service privacy wall was built for the Hearth Room offering a more intimate setting for diners, painting and refinishing many of the doors, deep cleaning all carpet and chandeliers, and all storage areas of the club were cleaned, re-organized and outdated items were removed. The Golf Pro Shop renovation has begun and is scheduled to reopen in March. Areas to be addressed soon are re-carpeting some dining areas, updating the ladies rest room near Bogey’s, installing a separate HVAC unit for the Library, and installing new doors at the casual entrance, Bogey’s and Bogey’s Bar, as well as replacement of some Steve Roper, CCM, CCE windows. General Manager New roster books will be sent in March and the Tennis, Golf, Kids Club (Hills Handbook) mailing will be ready this month. The Father Daughter dance returns this month and will prove to be a memorable evening for our young ladies. Cinderella will be here with her helper chatting with all the girls, dancing and taking pictures. A DJ will play their favorite tunes, so this will be an evening to remember with dad or grandpa! All of the staff at the club does a terrific job providing the members with the facilities and services consistent with the Meridian Hills tradition, but the tenured staff sets the example to the others and become mentors to all. Please take time to recognize who they are. 30+ years Bob Fine - Turf Care (32) 20+ years Jan Pyritz - Accounting (29) Jack Barber - Golf Pro (28) Ruthie Smith - Kitchen (26) Cheryl Brim - Dining Room (21) Paul Ray - Horticulturist (21) Lisa Williams - Dining Room (21) Ruthie Perkins - Kitchen (20) Lee Carroll - Dining Room (20)

I hope everyone is enjoying a snowy winter season while dreaming of warmer weather to come so we may enjoy more of our wonderful club. Remember, now is the time to be thinking of friends and family who would enjoy becoming a member of Meridian Hills. With our membership process taking some time those who wish to enjoy the club in the early warmer months must begin the membership application process now. Commit yourself to bringing one new member to the club because a solid growing membership makes us a stronger club. Tom Foster

Golf News

An Update from the Pro:

Is it Spring yet? My staff and I just returned from the annual PGA Merchandise Show, the industry's showcase for all things golf! I took the opportunity to visit with other PGA professionals and friends from around the globe, attended several educational seminars, and most importantly, was able to view all the new equipment and apparel that 2014 has to offer. In men's apparel Nike and Peter Millar continue to be strong, but several new lines are standing out as well. For those who follow the PGA Tour, you may have noticed the strong presence of Under Armour worn by recent Sunday afternoon players Scott Stallings, Jordan Spieth, Gary Woodland, and Hunter Mahan. How about the explosion of Dunning Golf, worn by Matt Kuchar, Charles Howell, Nicholas Colasaerts, Jim Furyk, and Russel Knox? BOTH of these brands will hit the Meridian Hills Golf Shop this Spring and Summer. Travis Mathew's lifestyle and golf apparel line is also set to make it's golf shop debut sometime in mid-May. Other specialty brands in luxury men's wear including shoes, belts, and super 120 slacks will hit the floor as well...so many new surprises for all of you! Ladies, we're going to have something new for you too! Joining Nike and EP Pro will be Under Armour and a new line called JoFit, which is specifically designed for women to look their best, with the perfect fit in mind! It will be exciting to present an array of new colors, shoes, and stylish accessories as well. Moving to the equipment side, 2014 might be year of the Driver. All companies are pushing the limits on distance similar to the fairway woods the past couple seasons. BIG BERTHA is BACK! Callaway will release the re-born Big Bertha line on February 14th, and let me tell you... She is meaner than ever! Taylor Made continues it's SLDR momentum and has released Jetspeed, advancing the popular Rocketballz products. Titleist offers an all-new 714 AP1 and AP2 iron lineup as well as a new SM5 wedge. Ping?....the i25 line looks awesome. Putters?...Odyssey now offers 5 styles in a counterbalanced putter with interchangeable weights in the sole and butt end of the grip to perfectly fit your stroke! Stay tuned later this month, as my staff and I will present our "HotList" in equipment for the 2014 season where we will rate new products Best in Class, Golf, Silver, and Bronze. Stay warm, Michael Bembenick PGA Head Golf Professional
