Dear Members, As a participant and club leader, the week of Timberman Golf Tournament is one of my favorite weeks of the year. When I played for the first time in 2001 as a guest of Jim Creighton, I was impressed by the way the golf shop treated the members and guests. Jack Barber, Kyle Bloom and the entire staff greeted me by name each time I came into the shop. The quality of the event, the staff, and the facilities was at a higher level than I had experienced at any other club.

Jeff Cristee Club President

It remains the same today. The tournament itself has a different feel than any other member guest tournament I play. It is a socially competitive tournament with the emphasis on social. This puts guests at ease and insures a fun and memorable week for all. One guest from Virginia this year told me this is his favorite tournament because he feels like a member when he is here. That is how I felt after playing in the event in 2001. I felt so at home here, that Dana and I decided to switch our club membership to Meridian Hills the following year. It was a great decision and it is validated every year I play in this event. There are times when it is difficult to articulate the Meridian Hills difference to others. I was reminded last month that the Timberman provides a tangible example that we are a unique and special club. Congratulations and thanks to Aaron Greenlee and the entire committee who organized this year's event. Special thanks as well to the golf and clubhouse staffs who orchestrated a great weekend. Lastly, congratulations to Jack and Dan Bayt on their Timberman victory. I can attest from personal experience that they were both competitive and social over the course of the weekend. And for those who know how much fun Jack and Dan are, the emphasis is always on social. Looking forward to seeing you at the club. Jeff

Our biggest congratulations to Steve & Katie McGovern who welcomed Quinn Caroline into the world on July 9th, 2013. She weighed 7lbs, 3oz and was 19.5 inches long. Quinn joins big brothers Will (4) & Max (2).

Message from theGeneral Manager Summer is cruising right along; at the beginning activity in all areas was heavy. Tennis, pool, golf, clubhouse dining and banquets all seemed to be at peak activity at the same time on certain days. We are aware that on those days, parking was a challenge. Things have calmed down somewhat in the latter part of summer, but I wanted to urge you to not park on the front drive curbs, or near the delivery truck access areas. Emergency vehicles need to be able to respond quickly and delivery trucks must be able to get in and out. Thank you so much for your help! The Board is exploring options to enhance the parking as well as ways to improve all amenities and assets. Steve Roper, CCM, CCE General Manager Logical cash management that makes sense, and makes your club better.

Thank you for your understanding as our caregiver’s primary focus is on the care, comfort, learning and respect of all the children. Closing in on my first two years at Meridian Hills and with the recent announcement of Jack Barber’s retirement, I wanted to express my sincere thanks to him, to the membership, for how important our relationship has been to me. In my 35+ years in club management, Jack is the very best, without question! His support, encouragement, passion, professionalism, and the bar that he has set for member service will be hard to replace. He is indeed very special. Thank you Jack and thank you for wanting to still be here, in a new role, one that you deserve!

See you at the Club!

A Note from Wade Rademacher, WGA/ESF Director, MHCC Member Members and Professional Staff of Meridian Hills CC: Appreciation, acknowledgement and gratitude are forefront in writing this letter.

Appreciation for the way the membership and professional staff received and welcomed the WGA/ESF, the competitors, their parents and our guests during the Western Jr. Championship just completed. From the membership of Meridian Hills Country Club over 60 volunteers reported for duty as scorers, timers and spotters. Acknowledgement that the members gave up the exclusivity of their clubhouse and the use of their golf course for the week of June 17-21. Acknowledgement that the professional staff spent extra hours and odd hours in helping with the conduct of the tournament. For this, I extend my deepest and most sincere, "Thank you." Gratitude that our membership, golf course, club house, caddie program, food service staff and professional staff performed in a manner that resulted in one of the finest venues ever for the Western Junior Championship. The winning score was 13 under par. A competitive course record of 63 was recorded on Tuesday, June 18, 2013. The Membership, The Professional Staff and all employees of Meridian Hills Country Club should be proud of successfully hosting the 96th playing of the oldest junior golf tournament in the United States of America: The Western Junior Championship. Golf News Dear Meridian Hills Members, At the July 10th MHCC Board of Directors Meeting, I informed the Board that at the end of this year I would be stepping down from the position of PGA Head Golf Professional here at the club. This is a position I have had the pleasure, privilege, and pride in working for the past 28 years. I am so very thankful for the position you have entrusted to me, as well as all of your support and friendship over the years. When I took over the job at age 35, Becky and I had been married 14 years and had two small sons - Jason 6 and Jesse 4. We moved to Carmel to begin our new life, after having left Lexington Country Club in Lexington, KY. Now some 28 years later, we have been married 42 years with grown sons and one granddaughter. I have been so blessed with such a tremendous family - I am forever grateful to Becky for being the backbone of our family, and the incredible mother and now grandmother she is. My wife and sons have been most supportive of my job, and I sincerely thank them for their patience and understanding of the long hours during golf season. I am so proud of my family and I look forward to being able to spending much more time with them in the future. Our oldest son Jason, wife Jenny Ann, and granddaughter Addisyn (5 years old) live in GA and Jason is a sales rep for Titleist. Jason attended Carmel elementary and middle school, and graduated from Brebeuf. He returned to Lexington to attend and graduate from UK in 2001. Jesse is living here in Indianapolis and engaged to be married to Lindsay Atkins in September of 2014. He is a vice president of sales for Southern Wine & Spirits. Jesse attended Carmel schools, and played baseball for UK, graduating in 2005. It has been an honor to promote and represent MHCC, and I feel this is the ideal time to leave the position when the club is vibrant, financially strong, and has added so many new members. Every day on the job I tried to make the best decisions that were in the best interest of our club and its members. I always attempted to make everyone happy, but we all know that is an impossible task. The old saying "you are only as good as the people working for you" is so true. I give so much credit to all of my great assistant golf professionals, young people that have worked in the golf shop, in the back shop, on the range, and caring for the carts. It has been special having Michael Bembenick with me the last 4 years. I am so proud to know that he will be the final member to my "Family Tree." I am very grateful for the job he has done and the wonderful person he is. Whatever successes I have enjoyed are primarily due to these people, whom I view as my extended family members, and I will continue to help them whenever I can. I also want to thank all other MHCC employees from the various departments that I have had the pleasure to know. These hard working folks make MHCC the fine club it is, and they are all dedicated to serving the members to the best of their ability. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to all the various Board members, committee members, and past club presidents for their dedication to the club. Sometimes these are thankless jobs, and we have had tremendous participation and representation from so many tireless volunteers in these roles. A special thank you goes to Jim Hess and Steve Roper for their hard work for this club. In the past 10 years I have been a witness to Jim's ability to come in and turn our golf course around and make it better than ever. Jim and I have worked very closely together and I have tremendous respect for the job he does. I have also had the pleasure of working with Steve over the past 2 years as our General Manager. He has made many subtle changes that will continue to have a positive influence on our club in the future. Finally, I want to tell our members how grateful I am for your loyal support, encouragement, mentorship, and friendship. I have always viewed my job as working with and for family members. Members are what make a club successful. We have always had some of the best members any club could want. When I accepted the position here, I felt like I may have been viewed as a grandson, son, or brother to many of you. Now as I leave this position, I realize that I have been mentored by all of you, and I leave with a grateful heart for all of you and the experiences we have shared. I look forward to further serving the club in an ambassador role, while continuing to promote MHCC as one of the finest facilities in the Midwest. Sometimes, even in spite of myself, I have come a long way for a good old Kentucky boy! Many thanks again Sincerely, Jack Barber 8 August 2013
