Uniform Philosophy

Why do we wear uniforms at Prism? Uniforms Builds our Culture & Creates a Sense of School Identity. A common uniform creates a sense of common school identity and limits the role that external definers can have on our school culture. Uniforms Remove Distraction. Uniforms diminish the focus on self and diminish the need to define one’s self by external clothing, hair, jewelry and thus allow students and teachers to focus on internal qualities. Uniforms Are Convenient. Uniforms limit the decisions that parents and students must make, thus limiting unnecessary arguments and decisions related to clothing. 5

Priorities for Uniforms Professional, Clean, Comfortable We are training the next generation of leaders and one very significant aspect of leadership is personal presentation. Toward the end of last year we began to increase our focus on ”professional presentation”. That emphasis will continue this year and some uniform changes are related to this focus. Simplicity In our efforts to provide options, our students informed us last year that our uniforms were too “complex”. It was suggested that instead of telling students what could not be worn, we create a simple list of items that could be worn for clarity. Cost & Convenience It’s our hope to provide a uniform that is sensitive to the many expenses families already face and to ensure our uniforms are not too expensive. 6

Changes this Year Introduction of a “Dress Outfit” • As part of a continued focus on professional presentation, all students in grades 7 th-12 th will be required to wear a defined, common professional dress once per week.

Introduction of an Online Prism Uniform Store • To help keep cost down, provide additional convenience, and to ensure students are actually dressed in Prism appropriate uniforms, we have introduced an online store from which families can order & purchase approved uniforms.

Limitations on Outerwear (Hoodies, Cardigans, Sweaters) • To ensure a common uniform is worn by all students and to remove the any lack of clarity regarding cardigans, hoodies, sweatshirts, only those purchased at Prism’s store can be worn at the school. 7

Frequently Asked Questions • Will there be a buy-back sale this year? – Historically, parents have organized this. However, in the last few years, no parent has stepped forward to organize the sale. If someone would like to do so, please contact us at info@prismeducationcenter.org to volunteer. We are happy to provide a facility and get prepared communication out to parents.

• If there is a buy-back sale, will old polos be approved? – Prism staff will review clothing submitted and will only approve clothing that is in good condition and meets the uniform policy requirements. Polos will be approved but they must visibly look like our uniform. No hoodies, jackets, fleeces, or cardigans will be approved. Additionally, no polos with multi-colored logos will be approved.

Frequently Asked Questions • What happens if my child shows up in non-approved clothing? – We will pull one from our store inventory and invoice parents. If something from the inventory cannot be found, we will contact parents to pick-up their child and obtain appropriate clothes from home. We may also elect to teach students how to wash and iron their own clothes in a non-punitive fashion if they chronically come in in dirty or wrinkled clothing.

• Do I have to buy a backpack from the Prism Uniform Shop? – No, students do not have to purchase a backpack from the Uniform shop. However, all backpacks must meet Prism’s uniform code. Prism’s uniform code states that backpacks must be solid colored without visible logos (no patterns, no logos, no characters including cartoon characters).

Frequently Asked Questions • There is an athletics pack on the Prism store. Is this required? – The athletics pack is not required as some students engage in athletics programs in their school uniforms—which are approved clothing. However, for students who wish to change clothes during athletics class or on-campus sports programs, only the clothing in the athletic store is approved. Generally speaking, however, K-5 students are not permitted to change during the school day for PE or Athletics class. Therefore this is not suggested for students in this age range unless they are in the running clubs. • Can my child try-on clothes? – Yes, students can come by every Thursday from 3:00-5:30 PM until school starts back to try-on clothes. Also, students can exchange most clothes for a different size within one-week of purchasing if the clothes have not been worn. Not all clothing options will be available initially, but please know if you order the wrong size, you can exchange for a different size at no cost to you. 36
