Adjudication The judges considered each entry for print quality and medals were awarded on the achieved result of the sample submitted.

Judges Brief To raise the standard and to promote the achievements in excellence of Australian printing.

Judging Criteria The objective of the judging should be to award no more than one gold, one silver and one bronze medal in a single category. However, there will be occasions where, because of variations in the dimension (whether creative, budget or degree of difficulty) of the entries with the category, more than one award will be appropriate. There will also be occasions where entries are considered to be below achievable standards and awards (either gold, silver or bronze) should not be made.

Whatever weight division, in fact whatever sport, everybody wants to be the winner. Whether you are the Super Heavyweight or Bantam weight, you are in the ring to win your bout. Generally the best boxer in the fight is the winner, but the best boxer isn’t always the biggest, nor does he necessarily have to have the biggest punch. The boxer that wins the fight has generally got his fitness right, done his research and has a good team behind him. Great similarities for what it takes to take out the medals in the National Print Awards. You can have the greatest verbage at the weigh in but if you can’t land a knock-out blow, then you are history. Proudly, there have been 32 KO’s this year all awarded with Gold Medals, with 32 Silver Medals and 29 Bronze Medals awarded. Congratulations to all winners and all other entrants who didn’t land the knock-out punch, maybe next year will be your turn. Luke Wooldridge has stepped into the ring to referee the judging process, filling some pretty big shoes after Rod Urquhart’s 11 year tenure, and he has performed very well. The competition was very tight and many of the rounds had to be decided by a point’s decision. There were also some TKO’s but Luke managed the whole process very well. The judges also need to be thanked for giving up a couple of days of their time and significant travel to complete the judging. The NPA committee have all been in intense training for the bout, and have again served the industry well. I’d like to thanks Tate Hone, Mac Barrot, Adam Todd and Bill Healey for having the stamina to see this event through, but the biggest thank you goes to Virginia Honeybone who has promoted the bout with extreme professionalism.

The awards will undergo a change of structure, going back to a direct entry format rather than the PICA gold medallists being the only entries. Another change will see a significant category review which will reflect the changes in disciplines our industry has experienced and is still experiencing. I’ve enjoyed the role as Chairman and truly believe that the National Print Awards is important to our industry and I wish the new team every success in showcasing the best of what we do. I hope you all continue to support the National Print Awards and enjoy the camaraderie that goes with it.

This is my first report as chairman of the judges, taking over from Rod Urquhart who stepped down as Chairman of the panel after eleven years of service. I can say that I now appreciate what a tremendous job Rod has done over the years and the systems that he left in place really helped to make my job a lot easier than it could have otherwise been. The judging of the 31st National Print Awards commenced on Tuesday the 11th of February. This was the sixth time that the 'Best of the Best' format was used and as per previous years, each State Printing Industries Association nominated a judging representative who was not involved in the state PICA adjudication process. The quality of the judging panel was first class and it was a pleasure to work with them. All of the judges were extremely well qualified and had previously judged the national print awards at some point. Their knowledge of printing is beyond question and together they brought a combined total of 295 years of industry experience to the panel. The 2014 judging team comprised of: Garry Barker – Victoria Mark Bloustien – South Australia Rod Jenkins – Western Australia Peter O'Hanlon – New South Wales Danny Roach – Tasmania Colin Straughan – Queensland It is a strict rule that only one entry from each state be considered for the National Award of 'best of the best however once again multiple gold medal winners were submitted. In fact there were more multiple gold medal winners submitted by the various states than in any previous year with twenty-nine examples of multiple entries. As a result the judges were required to spend a significant amount of time deciding the ultimate winner for the States before they could begin to judge each category. In some instances it was clear why multiple golds were awarded as there was little difference between the entries but this was not always the case and in one instance a single category had six gold medal winners. I won’t name this state…you know who you are! This year there were thirty-three categories, which mostly contained six entries. As usual at these events the entries were numbered so that the state and company details for each entry were kept from the judges. In the rare event that a judge had an association with an entry they stepped down from that category to ensure fairness for all. The judging

process is a slow one as every page of each submission is examined in meticulous detail. The judges were split into two teams of equal standing allowing each category to be examined without rushing the process. As you would expect, separating six gold medal winners was sometimes extremely difficult so the judges were looking for any imperfections in the print quality that would exclude a contender such as, but not limited to, hickies, picking, scuffing, cracking and of course misregister. No more than one gold medal was assigned to any category. The judges commented that the overall standard of entries was of equal standard to last year. Some categories, such as embellishment, were considered to be of a lower standard to last year while others were better than previous years. The most common flaw detected continues to be registration issues. The winner of this year’s judge’s award – 'The extraordinary Life of Sir Charles Lloyd Jones' was considered by the judges to be an excellent and flawless example of print quality. The standout category this year was book printing, limp bound with all of the entries of the highest quality. Not surprisingly the number of digital entries continues to rise and once again the common conception that digital prints are always in register was proven to be incorrect. I would like to sincerely thank the entire judging panel for giving their time and expertise to ensure the success of these awards. They approached their task in a serious and professional manner while providing attention to detail and significant industry experience. There was also some banter and good humour that made the task of reviewing so many entries enjoyable. I would like to pay special thanks to South Australian judge Mark Bloustien and Queensland judge Colin Straughan, who both announced their retirement from the panel at the close of judging. Their contribution of many years of service to these industry awards events is greatly appreciated. On behalf of the judging panel I would like to extend my congratulations to the staff at PIAA for their excellent work in sorting and coding the entries, recording the winners and generally supporting the judges queries. I would like to make particular mention of Virginia Honeybone whose attention to detail and organisation skills ensured the judging process was a smooth one that remained within the set timeframes. Queensland Since Sarah was young, she has shown an artistic and creative flair, which has led to her achieving her dream job in Graphic Pre-Press. Sarah loves what she does – especially working on wedding stationery, which has become the favourite part of her job. Sarah’s passion (apart from her job) is drag racing and driving her family’s modified dragster. Ultimately Sarah’s dream is to combine her passions of drag racing and graphic pre-press and own, design and print her own motorsports magazine.

Shah AUSTRALIA Manish was born and raised in Kenya and immigrated to Australia at the age of 16. In late 2005, Manish made a decision to join the family business, Quality Press. He was driven by a goal to succeed in business alongside his family. Having no knowledge of the print industry, Manish was given a short intense induction into production management and quickly became proficient in this challenging role. Manish is currently the Operations Manager at Quality Press and has undertaken projects such as ISO9001 quality certification, successful Lean Manufacturing implementation and FSC Certification along with other efficiency and environmental projects.

WALES Brad, a Senior Account Executive, has been in the industry for 10 years. He completed a cadet programme at BJ Ball that included: warehouse; samples department; internal sales; junior sales representative; sales executive. He is part of BJ Ball's Future Steering Committee – and proving his all-round leadership abilities – he is also captain of his local football side.

Australia Darius Kooth is a Digital Print Operator at Print Graphics Displays, Adelaide CBD, South Australia. His job covers design, prepress, typesetting, printing and finishing. He gained his trade certificate in Printing and Graphic Arts through Print Training Australia. Darius also attended the University of South Australia and graduated in 2006 as a Bachelor of Visual Communication. In 2013 he was awarded with the Ian Bowden Future Leader Award, as well as the Graduate of the Year Award, both representing South Australia. He is currently studying Diploma of Business (online) at TAFE SA while working at Print Graphics Displays.

John Billett

TASMANIA John is a print machinist with Foot & Playsted in Launceston. His ability to pick up the print process on several machines has enabled him to graduate to the position of senior printer on the Komori 6 colour and he is now an integral part of the shift process. John has progressed to take on the responsibility of Shift Supervisor. He was awarded the 2012 Tasmanian Printing Apprentice of the Year Award, as well as the Tasmanian Media Super Future Leader Award. In his spare time John enjoys the modification and restoration of cars and the outdoors.
