What You Need To Know About Your Aging Parents

As the owner of Silver Linings Transitions, a move management company, I see the challenges we adult children will face as our roles shift to caretaker.

A vivid vision of mine was visiting my great grandmother in the “nursing home” seeing all the geriatrics sitting in the lobby eagerly waiting for someone to visit. Even as a young child, I could identify their anguish.

Today, senior living is about vibrantly living. Once you begin touring senior communities, you will feel more like you’ve stepped into a resort rather than a hospital. Communities offer something for nearly every budget, personality and lifestylefrom pickleball, to gardening to fine dining.

As our parents age, we adult children worry about our parents and how we will address their care needs while managing our own families and responsibilities. Life in a senior community is a solution to this challenge providing quality of life for parents and allowing adult children to resume our role as their child spending quality time together rather than completing tasks.

As a move manager, I am often the first person who meets with a family after they’ve made a decision to move to a senior community. The most common concern I hear is “how will I downsize and what will happen with all of my things?”

Enter Silver Linings Transitions. We handle all of the logistics of a move starting with a customized floor plan of what will fit in the new home. Working from the plan, we help sort through belongings determining what will be kept and handling the sale, shipping or donation for the items that won’t fit.

Next we schedule and oversee our vetted movers, coordinating all the details of the move with all parties involved. Typically, the majority of the packing is done the day before the movers arrive and our clients sleep in their own bed both packing day and move day. While we are overseeing the movers and unpacking the home, our clients enjoy a day out returning to find their entire home is unpacked, organized and decorated. We also recreate favorite spaces and make sure the new home feels familiar and “homey”.

As the title suggests, we never know when a fall or an accident will happen. In my experience, recovery from these accidents becomes significantly harder as we age and can often be the difference between living independently versus relying on care.
