forward  today.  In  Dalian,  I  had  the  op-­ portunity  to  debate  with  students  from   rural   China   about   American   material-­ ism  and  learn  taiqi  daily  from  a  limber,   \HDUROGPDQZKRUHFDOOHGWKHFRP-­ munist  days  of  the  cultural  revolution.     :KLOHLQ+RQJ.RQJ,KDGWKHFKDQFHWR HQJDJHLQERWKFDSLWDOLVPDQGDFWLYLVP IURPZRUNLQJZLWKIDVWSDFHG¿QDQFLDO WUDGHUVWRUDLVLQJIXQGVIRUPLFURORDQV WR 6LFKXDQ IDUPHUV WKURXJK RUJDQL]HG adventure  races.  Even  as  a  third-­culture   kid   who   spent   her   childhood   in   Asia,   I   found   my   two   years   with   PiA   to   be   WKH PRVW H\HRSHQLQJ DQG UHZDUGLQJ

VHFRQG FRXVLQV MXVW NLGGLQJ VRUW RI  Whenever   people   ask   me   where   I   am   DXQWLHVXQFOHVWKHZKROHELW,WEULQJV from,  I  tend  to  say,  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Asia.â&#x20AC;?  I  was  born   LQ 6LQJDSRUH WR D 7DLZDQHVH PRWKHU and   an   American   father,   and   I   lived   LQ 6UL /DQND IRU D IHZ \HDUV :KHQ , was  about  8  years  old,  I  moved  to  the   86,KDYHPRVWO\JURZQXSLQWKH86 EXW,NHHSJRLQJEDFNWR$VLD²LIQRW to  visit  family  then  to  satiate  that  Asia   %XJWKDWDOORIXVDW3L$NQRZWRRZHOO $VDWZR\HDU3L$IHOORZ,JRWWRH[-­ perience  the  best  of  all  worlds:  lead  the   UHZDUGLQJOLIHRIDQ(QJOLVKWHDFKHULQ Dalian,   China,   for   one   year   and   then   LQWHUQRQWKHWUDGLQJĂ&#x20AC;RRUDW-30RUJDQ LQ +RQJ .RQJ WKH QH[W 2YHU WKH WZR years,  I  encountered  people  whose  life   H[SHULHQFHVHPERGLHGWKHZKROHJDPXW of  â&#x20AC;&#x153;ismsâ&#x20AC;?  -­  social,  political,  economic,   cultural,  you  name  it  -­  that  drive  Asia
