There’s a ton more than meets the eye on sunny Moreton Island.

A

s you approach Moreton Island, just a few nautical miles east from the mouth of Brisbane River, you can feel a sense of calm come over you.

It’s only been minutes since you left the hustle and bustle of the city but stretched out before you is a sparkling blue ocean, long white tracts of sand and a belt of lush green bushland that reaches into the sky.

The first word that comes to mind is Wow! In fact, that word seems to come up a lot while staying at Tangalooma, the island’s beachside resort.

The walk along the jetty to check in pretty much sums up what’s special about the place.

When you’re just five foot two and feeling tall, you know you’re in a completely different environment. At least that’s the case for Cat Grant as she helps her diminutive Peruvian host ‘mama’ prepare a traditional Amantani meal on an island in Lake Titicaca.

Cat and her boyfriend Graham Cole found themselves learning Quechua and wearing traditional dress while on Tucan Travel’s fourteen-day Amantani tour taking in Uros, Amantani and Taquile Islands on Lake Titicaca, trekking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, and visiting the Amazon.

“I’d always dreamed of visiting Peru,” says Cat. “The depth of history is fascinating especially when you come from a country that’s only been around 150 years or so.”

The Inca culture, the history of the Spanish conquest, and the modern Andean cultures are reflected in the architecture of various colonial cities and Inca relics. “The four-day Inca Trail trek really brought this sense of history alive for me, with ruins dotted along the trail, and of course, the landscapes of the Andes themselves made me feel like I was living with the Incas; it was a surreal experience,” she says.

Cat was expecting the hike to be a challenge - which it was - but it’s certainly

do-able. “I never felt like I wouldn’t make it, even on day two with the big climb over ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’ at 4,200 metres,” she says.

Machu Picchu was everything you expect but so much more - it’s a cliché, but this place really does take your breath away.”

The Amantani tour also takes in the lush Amazon jungle. “It was fantastic to see capuchins swinging effortlessly through the canopy just five metres above our heads, watch a tarantula bask in the moonlight, and witness snakes, piranhas and a variety of colourful birds up close, with no bars between us. One of our group members even saw a jaguar-like cat on the trail.”

The couple had never been on a group tour before. “I was a bit nervous about things we’re used to travelling just the two of us, or with friends and family,” says Cat. “I wondered, what would the group dynamic be like? Would they have the passion for Latin America that Graham and I have?

Kimberly Bentley – Owner/Manager Kimberly hails from New York, lived in Florida for seven years, London for four years, and has

now been in Perth for 15 years.

Kimberly started her travel career with Thomas Cook in the UK and served with them for over ten years, including five years as manager.

Kimberly has now been with Harvey World Travel for 4 years and also owns Harvey World Travel Currambine.

Kimberly is passionate about sightseeing all the wonders of the

world, her current favourite being Iguazu Falls in South America.

She specialises in North America, keeping her travels there up to date as recently as December 2008 when she flew Emirates’ new A380 into New York.

Kimberly has also experienced cruising on the Rhine River in Europe (pictured above) with Scenic Tours in 2009.

Alister Munro – Senior Consultant Alister was born in Tasmania but moved to WA when he was 10.

He lived in the Pilbara for 9 years and has now been in Perth for 18 years.

Alister now has 16 years experience as a travel consultant and his specialist areas are ‘Round the World’ airfares and adventure travel, and he is also a keen photographer.

Alister loves travelling ‘off the beaten track’ and his experiences include camping in Ethiopia, Mongolia, Europe and the USA, swimming with Whale Sharks in the Gulf of Djibouti, and cycling through Vietnam and Cambodia!

He has traveled extensively throughout Australia and Europe, and also to China & Korea, Eritrea, Dubai, Vanuatu, Mauritius, New Zealand, and most of South East Asia.
