Schools Go Smarter.
Tired of the school run and of trying to find a parking space at school once you've battled through the traffic? A number of primary schools across Tyne and Wear are involved in Schools Go Smarter, a suite of measures designed to encourage children and parents to walk, cycle or take public transport to school. As well as being good for the environment, we know that taking exercise at the start of the day helps children get fitter and healthier and perform better in lessons. And cycling is really popular with children; 30-35% say it would be their preferred method of getting to school. Yet at the minute only 2% do so. Schools Go Smarter works with organisations like Sustrans to provide
practical advice and support to schools, parents and young people who want to make more sustainable choices. As well as paying for practical improvements, for example bike sheds and cycle paths, it also aims to build a ‘cycling culture’ within schools by holding regular events like free healthy breakfasts for children and adults who ‘bike it’ into school. Schools Go Smarter has also bought simple ‘balance bikes’ for pre-school children, aiming to get them into the cycling habit nice and early. Schools Go Smarter is funded by the Government which wants to reduce the congestion caused by the school run, as well as improving the environment and children’s fitness in Tyne and Wear.

Easter Fun at Beamish.
The Easter holidays are here and it’s time to get out and about for some family fun. And what better way to find out about Easter traditions and have a go at some than a day out at Beamish ? There’s something at our very own award-winning Museum to keep everyone enthralled – a ride on the trams or the steam train, a trip underground into the working world of pitmen, a visit to the sweetshop for a tasty treat! During the school holidays there a loads of eggstra activities in store. From 29th March to 7th April, take part in the Beamish Egg Hunt – pick up the details from the Entrance when you arrive and follow the clues around the Museum. Or be part of a Suffragette rally in The Town, join the debate and take part in the march – should women really have the vote ?
For the whole of Easter weekend there are lots of things to try. Have a go at painting an egg in the school, dyeing one at Pockerley Old Hall or making an Easter card in The Town. On Easter Sunday and Monday, join in the egg ‘jarping’ and egg rolling in the school yard, find out where it started and why we do it. In all of the homes around Beamish, there’ll be a focus on food for the whole of Easter weekend. There’s lots of cooking going on with busy housewives preparing for a family feast. Follow the smell of tasty hot cross buns to The Pit Village, sample simnel cake at Home Farm and in The Town or custard tarts in a pitmen’s cottage. Don’t forget, with a Beamish Unlimited Pass you pay just once and visit for a whole year free, so you can go back time and time again for a great day out in history.

DIY Science Life is a Science Centre full of exciting exhibitions, activities, shows and workshops. We’ve teamed up with Primary Times to bring you some fun facts and science activities to try at home. Look out for our column in every issue.
SCIENCE FACT: A chocolate secret There’s a chemical in chocolate called tryptophan. Tryptophan is used to make serotonin, which carries messages around your brain. Serotonin makes you feel happier. No wonder we like chocolate so much!
Try this at home TASTY EXPERIMENT You will need:Chocolate (broken into small equal pieces, a piece of foil and a freezer! Wrap up two pieces of chocolate in foil. Put one in the freezer, and leave one out. Now wait for a few hours. Hard, I know. Unwrap the warmer piece and put it in your mouth. Don’t chew! How long does it take to melt? Can you taste the chocolate flavour straight away? Have a drink to take away the taste, then try again with the cold piece of chocolate. Is it the same?
Chocolate has to melt before the taste can reach the parts of your mouth that detect it. Your mouth is warm enough for it to melt, but it takes a bit longer when it starts off very cold! Try it with chocolate broken into tiny bits or grated. How about different kinds of chocolate? This is the sort of experiment we like!
LOOK UP! What can you see in the night sky? A great group of stars to look for is the Plough. These seven stars can be seen on any night of the year (as long as it’s not cloudy). If you find the two stars at the back of the Plough shape, and draw a line through them straight up into the sky, you get to the North Star, Polaris. Polaris is above the North Pole, so you can use it like a compass to find where north is.!
Hope to see you at Life soon! There’s lots to do this Easter including chocolate workshops (29-31 March.) Life Science Centre, Times Square, Newcastle. NE1 4EP Tel: 0191 2438210 www.life.org.uk

Hello my lovely friends
Bonnie the Queen Bee of The Alnwick Garden here!
With these recent days of sun in The Alnwick Garden I’ve started to feel the spring in my wings again. When the weather gets warm enough my bees will start to give our hive a good spring clean. It is far too cold in the winter for this kind of work, so we will soon be making a start on it – it’s a good thing too, the hive is quite a mess! Our hive is big enough to hold up to 60,000 bees in the summer, but at this time of the year there may be only 10,000. But as long as there are enough of us we can snuggle together, keep warm and look after each other on chillier days. But now that spring is starting to appear it is lovely to feel the warmth of the sun on the side of the hive again! I hope you can soon get out and about outside to really enjoy the warm weather. If you look carefully you should be able to see the first signs of spring - the first lambs perhaps, or the birds singing louder than usual. But as well as this, you will notice the first flowers starting to appear (keep an eye out for snowdrops, crocuses and anemones in particular), starting to tell the story of the new year. The flowers raise their delicate heads up towards the sun so that we notice them and can land on them to collect their pollen. Pollen grains are like colourful little grains of sand and have lots of energy in them that we give to our young bees so that they can grow up big and strong! It’s a good job that there are a lot of flowers, as we will have a lot of young bees to feed during the next few months. Take care and enjoy the sunshine! Bonnie.
P.S. Next time I’ll tell you about sowing some seeds for your own garden.

Banning boredom this Easter! “I’m bored” - it’s a familiar cry in many households during the school holidays. That’s why North Tyneside Council has just launched a new information service to help parents and carers find out exactly what’s going on for kids in the borough this Easter and beyond and hopefully keep those cries of ‘I’m bored’ at bay! The new service includes a dedicated area on the council’s website which lists details of activities, clubs, classes, sports, play, youth groups and more, for children of all ages, right across North Tyneside. Just some of the activities on offer this Easter include an Arts Camp at Burradon Recreation Centre, where 8
to 13 year olds can try their hand at all sorts, from archery to circus skills to free running. The camp runs from 9.30 am until 4.30 pm each day and places must be booked in advance, please call 643 7442. Or if your kids are climbing the walls, why not get them climbing a real Climbing Wall instead? Hadrian Leisure Centre offers sessions on its climbing wall for eight to 15 year olds, with fully qualified instructors. Seven to 12 year olds can take part in dance workshops including Zumbatonic, or get Easter off to a bouncy start with trampolining sessions. Please call 643 2025 to book. Enjoy a day with the family at the

MOKO DANCE presents MOKO MIX: The Rock & The Suitcase Story.
MOKO Mix, a double bill of new and exciting dance for young audiences aged 7+ and their families, is coming soon to Dance City, Newcastle in April 2013 The Rock, devised and choreographed by Tamsin Fitzgerald, is a coming of age story about a group of mischievous and adventurous children who hang out at a dark, eerie clearing called The Rock on the edge of town. The discovery of a mysterious map leads to a strange and thrilling encounter that will change their lives forever. Completing the double bill is The Suitcase Story. From inside her charmed suitcase she conjures up an imaginary friend that no one but her can see. MOKO MIX is presented by MOKO DANCE, a fresh, innovative dance initiative led by Dance East dedicated to opening the eyes of young people to the power of dance.
