TPP talks challenge Canadian pork subsidies The15throundoftheTrans-Pacific Partnership(TPP)tradetalksheldin Auckland,NewZealandfromDec3-12 wassaidtobeatoughroundforCanadian officials. The11strongTPPpartnershipgroup includesAustralia,NZ,theUS,Brunei Darussalam,Chile,Malaysia,Peru, SingaporeandVietnam,withnewcomers CanadaandMexicoparticipatingforthe firsttime.CollectivelyTPPnationsrepresentamarketofmorethan658million peoplewithacombinedGrossDomestic Product(GDP)of$20.5trillion,accountingfornearly30percentofglobalGDP. Thisisasubstantiallylargertradingpower thanthe27nationEUbloc. AustralianPorkLimited(APL)CEO AndrewSpencersaid“Australianporkproducers,alongwithourcounterpartsinNZ andtheUSopposedtheentryofCanada totheTPPbackinJune,basedontheir continuedheavyuseofsubsidiestotheir domesticporkindustry. “Canadianporkproducers,bybenefittingfromsubstantialgovernmentsubsidy programs,enjoyanunfaircompetitive advantageoverhard-workingAustralian

Collectively,Australian,USandNZ porkproducersandtheirnationalrepresentativebodiessupporttheirrespectivegovernments’internationaleffortstoliberalise tradeandremovetradedistortingbarriers andsubsidies.TheTPPagreementisreflectiveofthoseeffortsandisconsideredan ambitious,comprehensiveagreementthat willactasablueprintforaneventualAsiawidetradeagreement. PresidentoftheUSNationalPork ProducersCouncil,RCHuntsaidthat Canada’sfailuretoreformitsconsiderable governmentsupportfortheirporkproducers putsnotonlyUSbutAustralianandNZ hogfarmersatamajorcompetitivedisadvantage;“Inrealitywecannotcompeteon alevelplayingfield”.

Alltech has officially launched Alltech-Chinese University/Institute Research Alliances platform during a press conference held in Beijing. As part of a 2011 survey conducted by Alltech it was shown that China is now the largest feed market in the world. Alltech is putting unprecedented resources into China, including transferring one of its Senior Vice Presidents and the son of the founder, Dr Mark Lyons, to China in January 2012. FeedingBio-Mostosowsreducespre-weaningmortality,increasespre-weaninggrowthrate,reducestheweanto-estrusinterval,andincreasespost-weaninggrowthrate. DrWallaceHenry,SMPigsLimitedintroduced WesternEuropepigproductiontrendsbyshowingthe meritsofthevariousenergyandproteindietarydescriptions.Everyproducerneedstounderstandtheeconomics ofchoiceandprofitabilityneedstobetheprimarilygoal, notjustpig productivity. WallaceadvisedtheaudiencethatChinese producersmusthaveaccuratenutrientspecificationsfor theirownfeedingredients. DrGretchenHill,professorofMichiganState UniversityintheAnimalScienceDepartmentdemonstratedtheimportanceofre-definingtheneedofminerals fortoday’spigproduction. AsamemberoftherecentNRCreviewshegave examplesofthelatestthinkingonPhosphorous,Copper, Zincandother minerals.Chinesepigproducersneedtobeconcerned aboutthesourceofPhytasewhenconsideringhowtoformulate,andmustunderstandthatallchelatedminerals arenotthesameandthedataofonecannotbeusedto supporttheuseofadifferentproduct. Althoughmineralsarestillconsideredtobecheap, theremaybeunintendedconsequencesofoveruse,and producersshouldconsiderreplacinginorganicsources withorganicallycomplexedones. DrDaiwenChen,VicePresident,SiChuan AgricultureUniversity,explainedthatChinesenutritional researchisnowfocusingonidentifyingtherealneedsof ChinesepigsinChineseconditions. DrChenintroducednewdataonAlltech’sActigen productinsowswhichshowedimprovementsinpiglets whenusingActigeninsowdietsandtheweaningpig. By usingActigenpigswerebetterintermsofweightgain, growthrate,withmoreimmunoglobulinsandimproved immunityintheanimal.

DrWalterTibbetts,CapeFearConsultingcoveredthetopicoffeeding weanedpigsinlargesystemsforlifetimeperformance.Tibbettsexplainedthat highly digestiblefeedingredientsifproperlyformulatedcanresultinincreased intakeswithincreasedpost-weaningdailygainsinhealthypigs. Somefunctionalproteinsourcesofferadditionalbenefitsbeyondthecontributionofthe aminoacids.   StudiesconductedwithlargeUS integratedoperationshaveshownthatNuProcanimprovemetabolism, increasecellturnoverrateandpromoteimmunedevelopment.Thenursery phasemayrepresentonlyashortstageofthepig’slife,however,itisoneof mostcriticalperiodswithregardtocost,meetingtheanimal’scontinually changingneeds,andperformanceinthelatterstagesofproduction. DrJianPeng,ProfessorofInstituteofHuazhongAgricultureUniversity, DepartmentofAnimalScienceandTechnologyindicatedthatfibercanbea vitalsourceofhealthandproductivityinsows.Sownutritionisasimportant fromanon-farmprofitabilitypointofviewasotherages,andoptimisingsow nutritionimpactstheperformanceandhealthofweanedpigs. Australia’scapacityforanimalhealthresearchanddevelopment (R&D)isfacingaveryrealandseriousthreat,andnotfromwhere youmightthink,accordingtoDrPeterHoldsworth,ChiefExecutive OfficeroftheAnimalHealthAlliance(theAlliance). “NotthatlongagoAustraliaboastedoneofthebestregulatory bodiesforanimalhealthproductsintheworld–theAustralian PesticidesandVeterinaryMedicinesAuthority(APVMA).Itssmooth operationencouragedinnovationandscientificprogresswhile protectingthehealthandwell-beingofanimalsandpeople,”Dr Holdsworthsaid. “Todayhowever,theresultsofamajorglobalsurveyshowthatin Australia,89%ofrespondentsseetheregulatoryenvironmentasa significantobstacletosuccessfulinnovation,comparedto53-86% elsewhereintheworld”. changethefocusofhisproject,”ProfDunsheasaid.  “Australiawastheonlycountrywheretheregulatorreceiveda negativeratingforitsimpactontheindustry’sabilitytoinnovate.  “Whenyouconsiderthatinjustfiveyears,theaveragetimeto developandregisteranewlivestockanimalproducthasjumped by70%andthecostby36%,thisresultisn’tsurprising,”Dr Holdsworthsaid. “Australiarepresentsjust4%oftheglobalanimalhealthmarket.Ifwearetoremaincompetitiveglobally,itiscriticalthatwe provideanattractivelocationforR&Dinvestmentandbringing newproductstomarket. Thisrequiresaresponsiveandefficient regulatoryenvironment.”  TheFederalGovernmentiscurrentlyundertakingaseriesof reviewsoftheAPVMA,focussingonitsstructureand funding. Outcomesofthesereviewsareexpectedinthefirsthalf of2013,andarelikelytocontinueoverthenextfewyears.

News Five things to take away from the Alltech Pig solutions seminar Howcanthepigindustrystayprofitablein thefaceofhighfeedcosts,increased governmentregulationsandconsumer demandsintensifying? ThiswasthefocusofAlltech’s10thPig SolutionsSeminar,heldinHannover, GermanyontheNovember12. FirstupwasProfessorDeniseKelly,of RowettResearchInstitute,withafascinatingpresentationontheroleofgutmicrobiotainguthealth. Themoststartlingrevelationcame fromhercurrentresearch:pigletsfromoutdoorrearedsowswerecolonisedbygood bacteria,mostlylactobacilli.Incomparison tothesewerepigsrearedinisolators, includingthosefedantibiotics. Thesewereoverwhelminglycolonised bydifferentbacteria,includingproteobacteriasuchasE-coli, whichshereferredto aspathobionts.Thesehadahuge,visible effectongeneregulationinthegut. “Whatwasinterestingisthatmostof thegenechangeswereassociatedwiththe immuneresponse.Thisdataindicatedthat theconditionsanimalswereraisedinwas havingaconsistentandlargeeffectongene expressionpatterns,”sheexplained. “Animalsraisedindoorsandinisolators withantibiotics,showedverysignificant up-regulationofgenes,governingthe inflammatoryresponse,andanimalsinthe outdoorgrouphadsignificantdown-regulationofthesegenes.” Inflammationisenergycostly,therefore theoutdoorpigshadalowerenergycost associatedwiththeirimmuneresponses whichcancontributetowardsimproved productivity. Thesecondtakeawaymessagewas fromDrHansSteinoftehUniversityof Illinois.Hispresentationfocussedon increasingefficiency,specificallyinrelation tophosphorus. Hismethodforcalculatingthestandardisedtotaltractdigestibilityofphosphorusinvolvedsubtractingthebasal endogenouslossesofPfromapparenttotal tractdigestibility.Thisisimportantfor mixeddietsasitallowsamoreaccuratecalculationoftheamountofPavailableinthe diet.Itmeansthatitispossibletoonly feedtherequiredamountofPthusreducingexcretionandbenefittingtheenvironment. Heexplainedthatsustainablelivestock productionrequiresprecisionfeedingof nutritionallybalancedingredientstodeliver thebestproductyieldatanaffordable price.Nutritionistsmusthelpcommunicatethesolutionstheyaredelivering. Leastcostmaynotbeleastimpact, whereisitmostefficienttoproduce,and balancinganimalwelfareandenvironmentalprotectionarequestionsLCAhelpsus understand.TheEnglishpigindustryhas developedaroadmap,settingouthowit intendstoimproveitsenvironmentalcredentialswhilebecomingmoresustainable. Thefourthpresentationcamefrom ProfessorMichaelBrummofBrumm SwineConsultancyandtheUniversityof Minnesota.Hisgaveanoverviewofthe stepsneededtoproducethepigofthe future,coveringnoticeabletrendsinpork productionthatcan’tbeavoided. Someoftheseincludethecapabilities ofgeneticsupplierstolinkgeneticpopulationsindifferentcountriesandhemispheresforgeneticimprovementdecision, increasinggeneticprogress. Inproductionunits,thismeansthat

nutritionalandhousingneedswillevolveat everincreasingratesastheexpectedanimal responseintermsofgrowthandproductivityimproves.Inproductionfacilities,we mustplanforthecontinuedincreasein slaughterweights. InNorthAmericaandEurope,thereis anincreaseddemandbyconsumersfor ‘traceability’intheirfoodsupply.Anew metricforporkproductionwillbetotal wateruseperunitofproduction.Thereare manychangescomingandthepigindustry mustadapt. Thefifthandfinalmessagefromthe PigSolutionsSeminarcamefromDrKate Jacques,fromAlltech, inherpresentation onthenewfrontiersinprogrammednutrition.Hertalkfocussedontheadventof DNAmicroarraymethodsinfoodanimal researchandhowitischangingthefuture foranimalnutrition. “Theabilitytochartgeneexpression affordsanewwaytomeasureresponseto dietarychangeandshedsnewlightonthe complexnatureofdigestionandmetabolism,”shesaid. “Perhapsevenmoreimportantly, followinggeneexpressionbroadenstheway wethinkofnutrientsandnutrient requirements. Now,inadditiontotheirchemical rolesasbuildingblocks,energysourcesor co-factors,wenowrecognisethatoften nutrientsfunctionasgene‘switches’with theabilitytomodulategeneexpression.”

PRRs found in switzerland Swissveterinaryauthoritieshaveculledall pigsonafarminEasternSwitzerlandasa PorcineReproductiveandRespiratory Syndrome(PRRS)infectionhadspreadto otherpigs. Thespreadofthediseasewasfound afterintensifiedchecksaslastweek,the farmwasidentifiedasPRRS-positive. Bloodcheckshadtestedpositivefor PRRSvirus,theSwissFederalVeterinary Office(BVET)confirmedattheendof November. Atthattime,intotalthreefarmswere foundpositive–onebreedingfarmand twopigletproducingfarms,inthecantons ofAppenzellAusserrhodenandAppenzell Innerrhoden.Thesethreefarmshousedin total5,099pigs–sevenofthemtested positive.

Immediately,72sowswereculledto containtheoutbreak.Additionalcheckson thesefarmsappearednottohaverevealed anyfurtherinfection. Theinfectionswerereportedtohave comethroughsementhatwasimported fromGermany–theinitiallyculled animalsweresowsthathadreceivedinfectedsemen.Intotal27farmshavenowbeen blocked,astheyallreceivedtheGerman semen,andarecurrentlybeingchecked.In total,bloodsamplesneedtobetakenof approximately4,000sows. Asaresultofthefindings,theBVET announcedthattheimportsofpigsemen, eggcellsandembryosisbanneduntilthe endofJanuary. Switzerlandhadnotpreviouslyhadany knowncasesofPRRSinfection.

TheGovernment’sAgriculturaland VeterinaryChemicalsLegislation AmendmentBill2012,introducedintothe HouseofRepresentativesbyParliamentary SecretarySidSidebottomjustbeforethe Christmasrecess,willmodernisethe APVMA’sfunctionsandmakethechemical assessmentprocessmoretransparentand easiertounderstand,heclaimed.

Forthefirsttime,theBillwillintroducemandatoryre-registrationforagriculturalchemicalssuchaspesticidesand veterinarymedicinesregisteredinAustralia.

“Ourreformsareaboutmodernising thesystemforindustryandmakingsure farmers,thecommunityandotherland holdershavethebestpossibleAgVet chemicalsavailabletothem,”hesaid. “Atthesametime,reformswillprovide greatercertaintytothecommunitythat pesticidesandveterinarymedicinesusedin Australiaaresafe.” MinisterLudwigsaidthereformswill encouragethedevelopmentofmoremodernandsaferchemicals. Thegovernmentisprovidingapproximately$8.8millionoverfouryearstothe APVMAtosupportimplementationofthe reforms.

InJunelastyear,Chinahadalready allowedalimitednumberofporkproducts tobeshippedfromtheNetherlandsto China.Atthattime,trottershadnotbeen included.Demandforpigtrottersishigh inChina,withtheChineseNewYearcomingupinthebeginningof2013. Theallowanceofexportingpigtrotters markstheendofamulti-yearprojectby theDutchministryofEconomy, AgricultureandInnovation,aswellasseveralDutchlobbygroupsandagricultural organisations.

Asresult,CMG’smarketshareclimbed from10%to95%enablingthebusinessto growitssupermarketsalesandexport30% ofitsproductiontobecomethemajor supplierofAustralianporkintoSingapore.
