Activities to Develop Reading Readiness

By J. Keys Prim-Ed Publishing www.prim-ed.com

Foreword It is important to recognise the first phase in a child’s language development is one of readiness. This leads a young reader to subsequent learning as comfortably and proficiently as possible—an important foundation, without which children can rush into literacy skills and achieve little success.

Emergent Literacy Skills – Book 3 is the third in a series of three books which takes an emergent reader from the readiness stage through to the first year of formal school and curricular requirements. The series gives many opportunities for children to:

pl e

develop an enthusiasm for stories and books; develop an understanding that meaning comes from print; develop a curiosity about words, how they sound, the patterns within words and how they are composed; develop an awareness of letter names and sounds and recognise familiar words and letters; explore and experiment with sounds, words and texts; extend their vocabulary; link sounds to words, naming and sounding the letters of the alphabet; read a range of familiar, common words and simple sentences independently; begin to gain an understanding of the elements of story, including main characters and events; and begin to gain an understanding of how information can be found in nonfiction texts.

Sa m

Each book in the series develops nine areas of competency:

discrimination – visual followed by auditory matching directionality sorting ordering, including alphabetical ordering sequencing concepts comprehension word recognition, including vocabulary development

Each of these competencies is developed from book to book, advancing the skills introduced and practised in the previous book. Other books in the series:

Teachers Notes Emergent Literacy Skills is a three-book developmental series.

Sa m

pl e

Book 1 in the series can be used with children before their first year of formal school. It is important to work with children on these activities, to encourage them to discuss the process they are using to answer the questions. Not only will this help the children to gain confidence in asking questions and discussing their work, it will assist the teacher or helper to understand what the children are capable of and to guide and direct their learning.

Vi

ew

in

g

Book 2 further develops skills from Book 1 and can be used with children coming into their first year of formal school. It continues to be important for an adult to spend time with the children while they are undertaking some of the activities. Certainly, it is important to introduce the activities with children in small groups. Read the instructions with the children and check they have understood what is expected of them.

Book 3 continues to develop the skills from Books 1 and 2. To complete the activities, children need to have developed a wider sight vocabulary, increased phonic knowledge and more advanced handwriting skills.

The activities in Emergent Literacy Skills can be used as individual or paired work activities. Many of the activities are also ideal for group work. The activity can be enlarged to A3 for group work. Prim-Ed Publishing
