Active Phonics is a series of three photocopiable resources covering these areas of phonics: Book 1 – Initial Sounds; Book 2 – Initial Blends and Digraphs; and Book 3 – Final Consonant Sounds. In each book the pupils are required to use visual and auditory discrimination skills with pictures and words to identify each phonic sound treated. Active Phonics – Book 3 introduces single final consonant sounds and final blends and digraphs. Where possible, pictures have been included to illustrate the phonic sounds. However, many final blends and digraphs are words which are difficult to accompany with an accurate picture portraying the meaning. Activities include: • colouring/circling/matching pictures ending with the single consonant sound, blend or digraph; • copying each single consonant sound, blend or digraph with school script; • following directions; • yes/no words; • rhyming words; • read and draw; and • adding own words to the given list of final sounds. Review pages are included at the end of each section.

Active Phonics Curriculum Links The English Language Revised Primary School Curriculum for Ireland acknowledges that reading is a complex activity which necessitates the child becoming proficient in recognising and identifying words. In order to master this skill speedily and fluently, the child needs information from many different sources. One very important cueing strategy is based on the child’s knowledge of letter-sound relationships. Active Phonics is a three book series aimed specifically at developing this awareness in children. It covers many of the content objectives of the Strands of the English Language Curriculum. They include that the child should be enabled to:
