14 March 2011 Dear Alison Thank you for your letter of 23 February enclosing a letter from your constituent Mr Mark Ayres who is campaigning to eradicate homophobia from football. I too believe that an individual’s sexual orientation should never be a barrier to people taking part in – and enjoying – sport. I know the Football Association are currently working to: - Ensure every door is open for members of the gay and lesbian communities to participate and progress within football. - Combat all forms of homophobic language and behaviour – whether by spectators, players or other participants. We wish to create a supportive, open and inclusive environment by supporting the professional clubs and through the FA’s County network, which reaches out to every community in the land. I know the FA will continue to work to outlaw homophobic behaviour. As the guardian of the game in this country, the FA is uniquely placed to tackle issues such as homophobia. Thank you, again, for writing, with best wishes
