PRIDE STEERING GROUP WELCOMES YOU TO PRIDE 2019 Whilst the annual Pride In Newry Festival is in its eighth year, and while it is always organised by volunteers, this year’s Festival will be on a different scale and largely a ’not to be missed’ ‘one off’, following a successful bid by the Newry Rainbow Community committee to host UK & Ireland Pride 2019. This is not only a first for Newry but it is a first for the island of Ireland. The event remains completely free and welcomes everyone. The Pride in Newry team hope with your support, we can make this unique Pride Festival the most spectacular ever, coming as it does on the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York. We are asking everyone to join us to help make Newry’s one and only UK and Ireland Pride Festival the most spectacular and memorable festival ever held in Newry keeping Newry, Mourne & Down as a return to destination for LGBTQI visitors from all parts of the Island and indeed the world. The global #stonewall50 celebration campaign includes New York, Vienna and Newry. An incredible achievement for our dedicated, entirely voluntary Pride in Newry team. As Pride In Newry takes place on 31st August it will be the perfect large scale event to close the Pride season. The key Pride In Newry themes remain as we continue to offer 10 days of free festival events, one of the most colourful parades on the island, a free outdoor festival concert with international acts including B*Witched, Heather Small, Claire Richards, Saara Aalto, Donna Marie and many more, as well as a full sized funfair, community village, food stalls and a bar, all aimed at showcasing the diversity of communities and cultures in Newry and its surrounding area. The event closes for the first time with a spectacular fireworks display (A first for the Island of Ireland) and the official pride after party returns to Bellini’s. Participants from as far away as New York (USA), Toronto (Canada), Vienna (Austria), and Sydney (Australia) have already confirmed their attendance as well as organisations from all over the UK & Ireland which will give Newry’s one and only UK & Ireland Pride 2019 festival a truly international flavour - Think Eurovision for free with even more rainbows! In recent years, the Festival has had significant media exposure including BBC, UTV, Q Radio, Irish News, Belfast Telegraph, Gay Times, Attitude, GNI, GCN and many others covering. This year, Channel 7 News, Australia are attending to report on the festival and a BBC documentary is being filmed due to be screened in September. The event would not be possible without the ongoing support of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Tourism Northern Ireland, Newry Business Improvement District, Unite the Union and many others… For more information see prideinnewry.com or follow ‘Pride In Newry’ on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Issuu and Instagram. DR MICHAEL WARDLOW, EQNI. WELCOMES YOU... Welcome to the Festival Dr Michael Wardlow, Chief Commissioner, Equality Commission for Northern Ireland It is fantastic that UK & Ireland Pride Festival has come to Northern Ireland. This is a great opportunity to celebrate with the LGBT community across these Isles – we must also use it to highlight some of the challenges still facing LGBT people in Northern Ireland. We’re committed to working for equality for Northern Ireland’s LGBT people. For the next few years we will be focusing on inequalities in education, including those facing the estimated 30,000 LGBT children in our schools and colleges. We recognize that bullying based on prejudice is a persistent and widespread problem and one that has effects that last long after school days are gone. This year we supported an event ‘Are the LGBT Kids all right?’ where we learnt a lot which will inform our work to support a change in the culture in schools. There have been positive changes, including the strengthening of the voice of LGBT people in Northern Ireland. The equality and the respect that they deserve, alongside the rest of society, is beginning to take hold. The death of writer and journalist Lyra McKee focused more public attention on the struggles of young LGB people than at any time I can remember. We’ve also seen the strength of public opinion grow in favour of equal civil marriage, which is of course now a right in every part of the UK except Northern Ireland. Welcome to Pride and enjoy the festival! It’s a time when all of us have a chance to speak up for equality, respect and dignity for all people gay and straight. 15

UKPON CO-CHAIRS WELCOME. As Co-Chairs Gian & Mazz, we are thrilled that the members of the UK Pride Organisers Network chose Newry to be the official host of the UK & Ireland Pride event for 2019. This is an opportunity not only to celebrate Pride, but to highlight the inequality and challenges that the LGBT+ community in Northern Ireland are faced with every day. In the year where the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots is remembered and celebrated, we can see around the World today the significant progress made towards equality. Yet it seems progress in Northern Ireland has stalled. In the rest of the UK, marriage between same-sex couples is a right that the law protects and recognises. Northern Ireland however remains the only country in Western Europe not to have legalised same-sex marriage. There is legislation in the rest of the UK dealing with gender recognition and recognising the right to abortion, yet these rights are not protected in Northern Ireland. Over the last year, we have seen the LGBT+ community targeted by an increasing number of attacks. We have seen the alarming statistics that shows figures reported for homophobic and transphobic hate crimes doubling across the UK. In a society where there are daily incidents of abuse and discrimination, we must remember the tragic loss of Lyra McKee. Now more than ever, it is time for LGBT+ communities around UK and Ireland to unite against this behaviour. We are proud to join the team in Newry on 31st August 2019 for UK and Ireland Pride to promote a society where inclusivity and diversity is celebrated. 17

Help us bringing WorldPride to Sydney! #SydneyBid2023 32

EDITORIAL

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has officially launched its bid to host WorldPride 2023. If successful, WorldPride 2023 would be the first to be held in the southern hemisphere. The first WorldPride was held in Rome in 2000. In June, New York will host WorldPride while the 2021 event will be hosted by Copenhagen. Sydney Mardi Gras is well known for its spectacular Parade and Party. What is less well known is that the organisation has been delivering a world-class arts and cultural festival for decades.

Sydney Mardi Gras proposes to combine WorldPride 2023 with the 45th Anniversary Mardi Gras Festival. The proposed program will feature not just the 45th Anniversary Parade but a 17-day Festival including a First Nations Gala Concert and a sunset beach party at Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach. The proposition looks to be a world-beater – who could resist being in Sydney for such a unique experience? Not surprisingly, Sydney Mardi Gras’ bid has the full backing of government as well Mardi Gras’ long-term corporate sponsors. It’s time for WorldPride to be truly global, to move from its comfort zone and come face-to-face with communities that do not enjoy the rights that we take for granted. Sydney Mardi Gras have the experience and capacity to raise WorldPride to new heights. Let’s get behind it.

Sydney Mardi Gras’ bid reflects a compelling approach to connect Prides around the world with those in the Asia Pacific region. LGBTQI communities in this region experience some of the worst human rights abuses in the world. Let’s not forget that it was only due to a global public outcry that the Sultan of Brunei put a hold on introducing death by stoning for gay sex.
