Dear Parent/Carer Happy New Year to all our families! Straight away we are into a very busy period in school. S3-5 students are gearing up for important choices that they must make for next year. The process of ensuring all young people and their families find the right pathway is already well underway. S4-6 students are also gearing up for prelim examinations, which begin next week. To that end, we welcomed Tree of Knowledge and Leckie and Leckie into our school on Wednesday to work with S5 and S6 students on mindset for examinations. They set out an ambitious agenda for our young people as they move into a challenging few weeks.

In amongst the busy academic work we take time out on Thursday 26 January to celebrate Burns night. Do join us for one of the key events of our community year. Tickets are available from our school office. Our Burns Supper brings together all that is good in our school community. Speeches, poems and musical offerings from our students make for a hugely enjoyable night that we all look forward to. I very much hope 2017 is a positive year for you and your family, and we look forward to working with you . Gavin Clark Headteacher

Staff changes Congratulations to Pam McIntosh and Stuart Watt, who will job share the post of DHT Pupil Support during Yvonne Bink’s absence at Knox Academy until Easter. They take up post on Monday. Congratulations, too, to Ruth Dempsey, who has secured a PE post in the school. The other post that appointment created in PE will be filled by Kim Borthwick, who joins us from Falkirk HS on Monday. Emma Liddle fills Gayle Russell’s post whilst Gayle is on maternity leave and Jeni Allan, our PT Classroom Practice, returned from her own maternity leave on Monday to a four day contract. Sally Miller will retain one day a week as PT Classroom Practice for the remainder of the session. Look out for former pupil Shannon Harker in our office this week. Shannon has secured a post with us as a Modern Apprentice. Andy Arnot We were saddened to learn at the end of term of the untimely death of Andy Arnot. Andy was a much loved member of our History team at Preston Lodge from 1974 to 2010 (36 years), and he subsequently went on to become our chief SQA Invigilator. Many staff and students have very fond memories of Andy, and this was very obvious when a very large number of Preston Lodge staff attended his funeral on 5 January. Thank you, Andy, for everything that you did for Preston Lodge High School and, most of all, for its young people. School uniform We are likely to face some inclement weather over the next two months, and I would like to remind all families that we expect all students to wear full school uniform, other than in the most challenging weather conditions. Wellington boots can be worn, of course, when the snow is deep, but we would ask all families to support us in the wearing of full school uniform in all other circumstances. Thank you, as ever, for the very significant support that our families do give us in our attempts to ensure a level playing field for all of our students in what they wear. "Respect for All" Draft Anti-Bullying Policy Consultation East Lothian’s draft anti-bullying policy is available on the consultation hub and the council would greatly appreciate feedback from pupils, staff and parents. The consultation is open until the 31st January:

Tennis Are you the next Andy or Jamie Murray? Do you want to get involved in Tennis? All pupils welcome to come along to the new Tennis Club which is being run by the East Lothian Tennis Development Officer. The sessions will run on a Tuesday 3.45-5.00 pm in the Games Hall starting on Tuesday 24 January. If you are interested or have any more questions please see Active Schools Coordinator Mr Bennion.

Columba 1400 Academy A group of ten S2 and S3 students and 4 members of staff recently attended a Columba 1400 Academy in Staffin on the Isle of Skye. Leaving early on the Sunday morning, the excited group travelled by coach to arrive just in time for a scrumptious three course dinner! However, without further ado, our course started sharp on the Sunday evening. Columba 1400 is an initiative designed to help young people find their core values and appreciate their skills and potential. The group worked solidly throughout the week to all graduate successfully on the Friday morning. The leadership qualities of all of the participants shone through, and everyone gained a great deal from their experience. On the Monday, Skye was a gorgeous, crisp and sunny place to be as we departed for a long walk along the cliffs. A picnic lunch with some breath-taking views was the best part of the day! On the Tuesday, the weather turned dramatically worse and we woke up to cloud, fog, wind and rain – not great conditions for our search and rescue mission! However, search and rescue we did, and a great sense of pride and achievement was felt by all. Seeing our young people work together and problem solve in such horrible conditions was a real pleasure, and highlighted the resilience of the group. Wednesday’s weather was equally squalid and another, shorter hill walk near Portree was tackled. Thankfully, there was always an abundance of hot food, tea and cakes on offer to help us keep our busy bodies fuelled. On the Thursday, we opted for a beach walk where we spoke about how we felt about our values and how they could help us improve once we returned to school. Some brave participants even managed a paddle in the icy waters before heading back to the Centre. A surprise visit by Mr Clark on the Thursday kept some of the group quiet – but not for long! He joined us for our last few activities and commented on how well the Columba Graduates had tackled the challenges and how they had really gelled together well. In what was a busy, tiring, but immensely enjoyable week, new friendships were made and old ones made stronger. We worked hard, and found out lots of new things about ourselves and others. Now we are back in full swing at school, we are looking forward to using our new skills and strategies to help us all work to our best ability in all that we do. Pam McIntosh
