Dear Parent/Carer Happy New Year to all of our families, and we are very much back into the swing of things at Preston Lodge High School! It was a very proud moment to have our pipe band lead the opening night processions at this year’s Edinburgh Hogmanay celebrations, and we wish all our pipers and drummers the best for the coming competitive season. Next week S1s embark on a three-day outdoor activities trip to Lagganlia, near Aviemore. We believe that this is Scotland's most inclusive school trip, costing either £65 or £10 for students, and this venture means all of our young people will have experienced a residential school trip early on in their Preston Lodge career. Many thanks to the external funders who make this trip possible.

This is a challenging time of year financially for many families. Do contact Hannah Lennie, our new money advice worker if you would like a confidential conversation about the ways in which she can help improve family finances. We are confident that Hannah can make a real difference to the lives of many of our families. We are now preparing for our second round of school prelim examinations. I wish all of our students the very best of luck over the coming weeks and, as ever, do get in touch with us if you would like to discuss any aspect of our work. We look forward to working with you this year. Gavin Clark Headteacher

A Preston Lodge Hogmanay! Hundreds of thousands of people around the world have accessed Visit Scotland’s Facebook page to see footage of our wonderful pipe band leading Edinburgh’s Hogmany celebrations. Do take a look yourself.

Staffing Update We’ve had a number of staff changes recently, and I thought it would be helpful to give all families and update on where we stand. Next Tuesday we welcome Jim Matthews into our Pupil Support team as our new PT Inclusion. Jim has significant experience of Scottish and Canadian schools and we are delighted that he is joining us. At the end of last year we also welcomed two further staff into our Inclusion team. Gina Adams joined us as a nurture worker, funded by the local Area Partnership, and Sarah Horsburgh also joined us as a nurture worker, paid through the Pupil Equity Fund. We are confident that this strengthening of our Inclusion team will deliver tangible results for many of our students. In Mathematics Emma Bell took up post at Bannerman High School in December. Emma travelled to Preston Lodge from Glasgow each day whilst with us, and was understandably keen to reduce her daily journeys. We thank Emma for her service to the school and wish her well in her new role. We are currently advertising for a replacement mathematics teacher. We also say a big thank you to Katie Walling in our Science team, who has secured a post as a biology teacher at Peebles High School. Like Emma, Katie was keen to reduce her daily travel time and we are very grateful for the enormous contribution that she has made to our school. Katie leaves a real legacy in the S1 Lagganlia trip, which was a project that she very passionately took forward last year. In Humanities, Maija Aalto is currently covering Emma Liddle’s maternity leave, and in Languages we are currently advertising for a French teacher after Lyndsey Byrne took up a new contract at Craigmount High School.
