s we enter our second full year of publishing Alternative Medicine, we are making some changes in response to suggestions from you, our readers. The first change you’ll see in 2013 is the inclusion of a food feature in each issue. We hope to expand this section because food truly is medicine. This section will discuss the relationship between diet and specific health conditions. We plan to include recipes in each issue and support the articles with even more information on our website. This month our food feature is focused on a gluten-free (or glutenreduced) diet. As writer Mark Sisson points out, a gluten-free diet can have benefits for many people, not just those with celiac disease. The gluten-free trend is happening in response to the grains farmers favor today. While these grains produce a higher yield (thus feeding more people using less land), the wheat produced contains higher concentrations of the problematic gluten protein than the wheat our parents and grandparents consumed. This is one of the reasons we will include an article on gluten-free in every issue of Alternative Medicine in 2013. Gluten is contained in many aspects of our diet (breads, cereals, and pastas) so eliminating gluten from our diet can be very difficult. And just because a product is labeled gluten-free does not make it good for you—there is an

entire new industry of gluten-free junk foods masquerading as healthy alternatives to regular junk foods. Food is an important aspect of living a healthier lifestyle. Most natural food is not harmful when consumed in moderation (yes, even bacon and beef are fine when consumed wisely). It is the additives in our modern food supply that are at fault. When I read a food label I have one easy rule: if I can’t pronounce the ingredient, or it the ingredient is longer than ten letters, I try not to consume the product. I am also a realist and I realize that if I want to consume fresh strawberries in Minnesota in January, I will not find them from a local grower. In the end, it is all about tradeoffs and making smarter dietary decisions. Another change that you will see this year is the expansion of our major feature article in each issue. These features will be a little bit longer and, again, related to content on our website. This will make it easier for you to find information on topics like heart disease, diabetes, or Alzheimer’s. These links will include resources for additional information, articles, books, and websites on the subject. We look forward to your continued feedback.
