EDITOR’S NOTE: THE BEST OF TIMES

T

his is it… the magic issue of FishMonster/Island Jane Magazine. There is no better time of the year down here in the Florida Keys and Key West than May and June. Everything is perfect! Warm weather and light breezes coupled with the massive migration of spring bring out the passion in our writers and captains. Captain Mike Bartlett out of Key West gets flat out silly with the anticipation of full throttle tarpon season not only because of the tarpon but because of the bonefish. It seems everybody is after the Silver King leaving the Gray Ghost up for grabs!

Captain Tony Young out of Islamorada puts together some underwater intel about the habits of certain types of grouper. Terms like ”eye contact” and “pursue” help paint the picture of an amazing hunt… underwater. Captain Beau Woods out of Stock Island also paints a grouper picture from the deck of his center console. The words he uses will thrill you before you even get the rod in your hand. He’s a trendsetter in descriptive words that’s for sure. Here’s to a summer filled with adventure and big fish. Thank you all for your support of FishMonster/Island Jane Magazine!

‘Tis the Season for

Tarpon and

Bonefish!

M

ay is here, and that means it is officially tarpon season, yeaaah! The next two months are the busiest of the year. We’ll be out every day spending long days on the water chasing the Silver King. No matter the weather (unless of course we get a tropical storm or there is lightning cracking all around) we’ll be out there jumpin’ poons. Most of what will be written about and posted on social media pages these next few months will be stories, photos and videos of giant tarpon rocketing out of the water, blistering drags and close up headshots - and rightfully so, the tarpon is one of the most, if not the most spectacular fighting and beautiful fish that swims the oceans. Early morning sunrises with happy tarpon slowly rolling in slicked out conditions and giant slabs of silver jumping high in the air during the mid-day sun are wonderful sights to see. But there is one aspect of tarpon season that often gets overlooked... fishing for bonefish. That’s right, bonefishing in the middle of tarpon season. My favorite phone call or email is from someone who wants to go fish for bonefish in May and June. Not only is bonefishing really good right now, nobody is taking advantage of it! I get it, its all about tarpon right now but bonefishing is a nice break from poling the oceanside flats every day, especially after getting beat up by the occasional ‘breezy’ day.

There will inevitably be a couple of days when there aren’t that many tarpon pushing through or, for a variety of reasons, we just can’t get one to eat. Bonefish are always there to save the day. It’s a nice break from being frustrated with tarpon to putting a fly in front of a school of bonefish, and they are more than eager to eat your offering. Though the main plan for the day may be to fish for bonefish, I will still get out early and do some tarpon fishing. No point in missing an opportunity for some spectacular fishing. The idea is to jump a few tarpon, get at least one to the boat (we’ll need it for the flats grand slam), then off to the bonefish flats. The great thing about many of the flats I fish for bonefish, there is usually tarpon moving through close by. So even though we are fishing for bonefish, tarpon never stray too far from my mind. Anglers from around the world will descend upon the Florida Keys in May and June for their chance to hook and land a monster tarpon. Whether on fly or spin tackle; live, dead or artificial bait; flats, channels or bridges; we will all have tarpon on our minds and in our dreams. Just remember, tarpon aren’t the only fish to target right now. There are plenty of bonefish working the flats, just waiting for your fly to land in front of them. Wishing all the tarpon guides and anglers out there tight lines and handfuls of silver!
