The  key  to  creating  inviting,  livable  outdoor   rooms  is  to  put  the  same  thought  and  care  into   the  furnishings  and  dĂŠcor  that  you  put  into  your   interior  spaces.  Of  course,  comfortable  seating   areas  for  reading,  relaxing  and  socializing  are  of   utmost  importance.  Colorful  accessories  and  ac-â€? cent  lighting  elements  are  also  vital  to  creating  an   inviting  space.  Here  are  some  other  things  to  con-â€? sider  when  setting  up  your  outdoor  living  rooms: ČˆDedicate  a  space  to  be  in  the  moment  –  a   place  for  peace,  calm  and  mindfulness.  It  can  be   as  simple  as  a  bench  in  the  garden. Makers & Shakers

Quick-Change Artist Nora  Fleming’s  serveware  with  interchangeable  decorative  “minis   have  helped  to  make  entertaining  easy  and  memorable.

W

hen  Nora  Fleming  launched  her  eponymous  company  with  her  brother,  Jon  Neidlinger,  in  the  fall   of  2004,  they  literally  changed  the  way  people  could  entertain.  Fleming  had  the  innovative  concept   of  creating  serving  pieces  with  holes  that  allow  for  decorative  ceramic  pieces  –  called  “minisâ€?  –  to   „‡‡ƒ•‹Ž›•Â?ƒ’’‡†‹Â?ƒÂ?†…ŠƒÂ?‰‡†‘—–ˆ‘”˜ƒ”‹‘—•‘……ƒ•‹‘Â?•ǥŠ‘Ž‹†ƒ›•ƒÂ?†–Š‡Â?‡•ǤÂ‘Â†ÂƒÂ›ÇĄÂ?‘”ƒƪ‡Â?‹Â?‰ȋ–Š‡ …‘Â?’ƒÂ?Â›ČŒ‘ƥ‡”•ƒ’’”‘š‹Â?ƒ–‡Ž›Í–Í”•‡”˜‡™ƒ”‡ƒÂ?†Š‘Â?‡nj†¹…‘”„ƒ•‡•ƒÂ?†Í?Í”†‹ƥ‡”‡Â?–Â?‹Â?‹•ǥƒÂ?†‹•…ƒ””‹‡†‹Â? some  1,400  stores  –  mostly  independent  gift  boutiques  –  nationwide.  Fleming  has  cultivated  many  fans  who   have  become  collectors  of  her  minis,  which  feature  cute  names  as  adorable  as  their  designs.  Here,  she  shares   Â?‘”‡ƒ„‘—–‘”ƒ Ž‡Â?‹Â?‰ƒÂ?†Â?‘”ƒƪ‡Â?‹Â?‰Ǥ

Q.  How  did  you  come  up  with  the  idea  for  serveware  with  interchangeable  attachments? I  owned  a  paint-â€?your-â€?own  pottery  studio  in  Naperville,  IL.  As  I   saw  people  come  in  to  paint  platters  month  after  month,  holi-â€? day  after  holiday,  I  thought  there  might  be  a  way  to  simplify   creative  entertaining  by  changing  out  the  little  decoration  on   –Š‡’Žƒ––‡””ƒ–Š‡”–ŠƒÂ?—•‹Â?‰ƒÂ?‡Â?–‹”‡Ž›†‹ƥ‡”‡Â?–’Žƒ––‡”‡ƒ…Š time.  A  little  creativity  and  a  drill  took  care  of  the  rest!

nora  fleming  BPA-free  melamine  servers  with  “welcome,  friends!   and  “surf’s  up!  minis.

Q.  What  was  your  professional  background  prior  to   starting  your  company? I  have  a  degree  in  political  science  from  the  University  of   Michigan.  I  freelanced  as  a  writer  at  a  creative  agency,  Mad-â€? †‘…Â?Â‘Â—Â‰ÂŽÂƒÂ•Č€Â… —ƼÂ?‹Â?ÂŽÂ?Š—”•–ǥ ÇĄ™Š‡”‡ ‘™‡ƒŽ‘–‘ˆÂ?› success.  They  really  developed  me  into  a  creative  thinker  and   ‡š’ƒÂ?†‡†Â?›ƒ„‹Ž‹–‹‡•ƒÂ?†…‘Â?Ƥ†‡Â?…‡ĥƒÂ?ƒ”–‹•–Ǥ Q.  You  co-own  the  company  with  your  brother,  Jon.   Who  does  what,  and  how  is  it  working  with  your   brother? Working  with  my  brother  takes  advantage  of  the  best  of  both

of  our  talents.  He  handles  the  business  end,  while  I  head  up   the  creative  department.  Although,  as  the  years  go  by,  he  has   developed  a  fantastic  creative  edge,  and  now  we  collaborate   on  most  projects  both  on  the  business  and  design  ends. Q.  How  has  your  line  expanded  over  the  years? We  have  expanded  from  “justâ€?  platters  to  include  home-â€?dĂŠcor   pieces  such  as  our  utensil  holder  and  tissue-â€?box  cover.  We   also  partnered  with  JK  Adams  in  Vermont  on  our  black-â€?walnut   servers.  In  2017,  we  introduced  melamine  bases  as  well.  On   the  minis  side,  we  carry  licenses  for  a  dozen  collegiate  football   helmets.  We  also  have  a  line  of  pillows  –  the  same  idea  as  our   bases  and  minis,  but  with  pillows  and  panels. here  are  a  few  things  worth  noting  when  choosing   the  perfect  wedding  gift  for  a  bride  and  groom.  Since   the  majority  of  couples  are  in  the  25-â€?to-â€?35-â€?year-â€?old  age   range  and  have  been  together  for  a  while,  little  is  needed  for   a  start-â€?up  apartment  –  no  toasters  for  this  group,  no  sterling   to  shine  or  crystal  to  hand  wash!  Millennial  couples  are  busy   beginning  a  career,  buying  houses,  vacationing  and  living  in   the  moment. Present-Day Etiquette

Don’t Forget  to  RSVP! Yes,  you  DO  need  to  RSVP  to  an  invitati0n  whether  or  not  you’re  attending   the  event.  Here’s  what’s  proper  and  why. By  Maralee  McKee

E

very host  would  like  the  guests  they  invite  to  an   event  to  RSVP.  When  guests  do  not  respond  by   the  RSVP  date  –  or  not  at  all  –  it’s  frustrating  for   the  host  trying  to  anticipate  attendance  for  the  function,   whether  it’s  a  wedding,  dinner  party,  shower  or  casual   get-‐together.  An  RSVP  from  a  guest  is  not  only  a  social   duty,  but  also  a  way  to  show  their  appreciation  for  the   invitation  to  the  event  –  whether  they  plan  attend  or  not.   Here,  etiquette  expert  Maralee  McKee  explains  the  rules   of  RSVPing. What  does  RSVP  mean  exactly? RSVP  loosely  translates  from  French  as  “Please  Re-‐ spond.”  It’s  an  easy  request.  It  just  means  that  the  hosts   are  asking  us  to  let  them  know  whether  we’re  coming  to   their  party  or  event  so  that  they  can  plan  seating,  food   and  anything  else  they  need  to  arrange  for  our  needs. How  quickly  should  we  RSVP? Within  24  hours.  Yes,  just  one  day!  The  same  day  you  receive   the  invitation  is  best.  A  fast  response  signals  that  you’re   excited  to  be  included  in  the  event!  Think  of  it  like  this.  If  I  held   up  a  $100  bill  and  asked  whether  you  wanted  it,  I  doubt  you’d   wait  for  two  weeks  (or  forget  entirely!)  to  let  me  know  you   wanted  the  money. Can  I  wait  until  the  “RSVP  By”  date  to  respond? You  can,  but  it’s  like  showing  up  late  for  the  party.  Fifty  years   ago,  no  one  put  “RSVP”  on  invitations.  Why?  Because  it  was   considered  really  rude.  Asking  people  to  RSVP  meant  that   hosts  didn’t  trust  that  people  would  do  the  right  thing  on  their   own  without  a  special  request  from  them.  But,  times  change   and  etiquette  evolves  to  keep  up  with  current  sensibilities  –   and,  in  this  case,  necessity.  Sometime  in  the  late  1960s  or  early   1970s,  people  started  adding  “RSVP”  to  their  invitations  as  a   reminder  for  people  to  respond.  More  recently,  things  in  the   RSVP  world  have  slid  further  downhill,  and  now  most  requests   list  an  “RSVP  by”  date  because  people  are  slow  to  (or  just   don’t)  RSVP.

PrintsWell “Confetti  Sparkle”  foil-‐pressed  reply  card.

What if  you  don’t  know  whether  your  schedule  is  going     to  allow  you  to  attend? Go  ahead  and  call  the  host  to  acknowledge  the  invitation  the   day  you  receive  it.  Then  ask  whether  it  would  be  an  imposi-‐ tion  if  you  waited  to  respond  until  you  know  your  schedule.  If   you  can  explain  what  the  event  is  that  you’re  waiting  to  hear   ƒ„‘—–ǡ‰‘ƒŠ‡ƒ†ƒ†Ž‡––Š‡Š‘•–‘™ǤDz›•‹•–‡”‹•ƪ›‹‰‹ some  time  that  week  for  a  visit,  and  I  don’t  know  the  dates  for   •—”‡Ǥ••‘‘ƒ••Š‡„‘‘•Š‡”ƪ‹‰Š–ǡ ǯŽŽŽ‡–›‘—‘™Ǥdz ˆ‹–ǯ• personal,  you  don’t  need  to  mention  it. Do  I  have  to  respond  to  every  invitation?  What  about     parties  at  people’s  homes  where  I’m  supposed  to  buy   something? Yes,  even  sales  parties  should  receive  your  RSVP  within  24   hours.  Typically,  sales  solicitations  don’t  need  to  be  responded   to,  but  since  this  one  is  being  hosted  by  someone  you  know,   it’s  gracious  to  let  her  know  whether  she  should  set  out  a   chair,  provide  refreshments,  and  do  things  just  for  you!  It’s   also  very  helpful  to  the  person  selling  the  product  to  know

A timely  response  is  our  outward  expression  of  our  inward  consideration! ‡PRESENT presentmag.com

how  many  catalogs,  samples  and  such  to   bring  to  the  party. What  about  writing  “Regrets  Only     on  invitations? People  are  no  better  at  telling  you  they’re   not  attending  than  they  are  at  letting  you   know  they’re  planning  to  join  you.  So,  you   won’t  get  a  better  count  asking  for  “Re- grets  Only.  “Regrets  Only  is  reserved  for   huge  invitation  lists  (fundraisers,  corporate   events,  etc.),  where  one  person  would  be   overwhelmed  by  the  amount  of  correspondence  it  would  take   to  keep  track  of  who  is  and  isn’t  coming.  For  events  with  fewer   than  250  attendees,  the  standard  RSVP  applies.

Lastly,  when  a  friend  RSVPs  and  shares  that  she  or  he  can’t  at- tend,  the  most  gracious  thing  is  to  say,  “You’ll  be  missed! Maralee  McKee  is  the  founder  of  The   Protocol  School  and  MannersMentor.com,   a  social-skills  blog.  A  sought-after  etiquette   expert  who  has  prepared  individuals  to   meet  kings  and  presidents,  she  presents   modern  business  etiquette  training  for   small  businesses  and  Fortune  500   companies.
