GROUP PROJECT A BIKE SHELTER FOR SHEFFIELD
C R O S S OV E R
WE ENTERED A COMPETITION AS A GROUP OF FOUR FROM TRADA, ENCOURAGING THE USE OF TIMBER TO CREATE A LARGE BICYCLE STORAGE FACILITY WITHIN A MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL PARK IN SHEFFIELD. THIS WAS TO INCLUDE A CAFE, COMMUNITY SPACE, BIKE WORKSHOPS AND STORAGE FOR A THOUSAND BIKES. SMALLER BIKE HUBS THAT ARE SCATTERED AROUND SHEFFIELD WERE ALSO PART OF THE DESIGN. THE BRIEF WAS VERY OPEN ENDED WITH NO MEASUREMENT RESTRICTIONS OF VOLUMES GIVEN.
SITE ANALYSIS IT WAS DIFFICULY TO ANALYSE THE SITE IN THE FIRST WEEK AS IT WAS TOO FAR AWAY FOR US TO VISIT. WE RESEARCHED EXISTING BICYCLE ROUTES WITHIN PARKWOOD SPRINGS AND ON A WIDER SCALE THROUGH SHEFFIELD, ACCESS POINTS, CURRENT SPORTS FACILITIES AND OUTDOOR AREAS SURROUNDING THE SITE. WE PRODUCED A LARGE A0 MAPS SHOWING THIS ALONG WITH VISTAS AND VIEWS OF AND FROM THE SITE. THIS REALLY HELPED WITH UNDERSTANDING THE TOPOGRAPHY AND CONTEXT OF THE SITE.
