ARCHWAY GALLERY presents PICTURAFERRAMENTO: A DUET FOR PAINTING AND IRON WORK 2305 DUNLAVY (713) 522-2409 archwaygallery.com August 4—30, 2018
Ferramento: A Duet for Painting and Iron Work, featuring recent collaborative works by Michael Mistric and Richard Brian, on
view August 4--30, 2018. The artists will be on hand to visit with guests during the exhibition opening reception on Saturday, August 11 from 5 – 8 p.m. at the gallery and will talk about their work at 6:30 p.m. Pictura-Ferramento: A Duet for Painting and Iron Work is an exhibition featuring the recent collaborative works of painter Michael Mistric and metal worker Richard Brian in two and threedimensional formats. Mistric’s bold, colorful, and highly rhythmic abstractions in oil set the themes for Brian’s improvisations in metal, which frame or support the painted works. Each artist’s contribution harmonizes with the other’s, creating a dynamic and exuberant whole. The geometrical shapes, patterns, and
fluid curves silhouetted in black over strong colors that predominate in Mistric’s work spring spontaneously from his head to his hand without prior deliberation. Brian ris on these, using metal cutouts, mesh, and iron, sometimes in counterpoint to and at other times in completion of Mistric’s forms. Together, the artists produce works which generate a distinctly personal visual association for each viewer, while expressing their overall joy in the process of creation itself. Mistric has devoted over thirty years to the nursing
profession as a nurse and nurse practitioner and currently teaches nursing at several area universities. As the owner and founder of Accents in Iron, Brian has worked with the Design Industry in Houston and beyond since 1992 MIKE + DOUG STARN: BIG BAMBÚ THIS THING CALLED LIFE THRU SEPT 3, 2018 MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS 1001 BISSONNET CAROLINE WIESS LAW BUILDING www.mfah.org Mike and Doug Starn have reconceived their ongoing Big Bambú project for Houston, filling the Museum’s austerely graceful Ludwig Mies van der Rohe– designed galleries with a monumental wave of bamboo. An installation of some 3,000 poles lashed together, This Thing Called Life rises 30 feet from the floor of Cullinan Hall, cresting onto the balcony of Upper Brown Pavilion. Visitors are invited to cross a bridge of bamboo that winds from the balcony into the wave’s curl, then continue on the path deep into the sea of Big Bambú. The path extends to the
floor, where you can explore the bamboo eddies and currents at ground level. The sea has long been a part of the Starns’ lexicon: an emblem of great age, yet continually new and changing. Taking inspiration from the architecture of nature, the Starn brothers began to use bamboo in their studio in 2008. Their first public installation—on the roof of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2010—was experienced by more than 600,000 visitors, making it the ninth most-attended exhibition in that museum’s history. They have since created other iterations of Big Bambú around the world, but This Thing Called Life is the first public staging indoors, in active dialogue with an existing structure. The artists have been widely recognized for more than three decades for their conceptual photographic work, and this installation features three gigantic photographs of previous Big Bambú incarnations. Folding and draping o the wall and ceiling, these huge prints attest to the ongoing nature of Big Bambú, a process that never comes to rest, akin to life itself.
