What is involved in a Traineeship? • All trainees complete valuable work experience that has real job role responsibilities for a period of up to 6 months. • Trainees are given an initial short preparation period in college and then progress to 1 day a week in college and up to 4 days a week in the work place. • Traineeships are flexible, learners are encouraged to progress into work or apprenticeships at the earliest opportunity. • Trainees spend time developing their maths, English and work related skills during their college study day. Traineeships are available to start throughout the year. For more information or to enquire about start dates please contact Rachel Baldwin on 01733 762144.

Core

Skills

Are you looking to become more confident in using everyday English and maths skills? Do you wish to develop your English and maths skills and improve employment prospects? Our English and Maths team at our Jobsmart centre are on hand to support your learning and prepare you for a range of English and Maths qualifications.

English & Maths (at Jobsmart) Classes are held at our Jobsmart oďŹƒces in the centre of town and also at various community venues in and around Peterborough. There is the opportunity to study English and maths qualifications from Entry Level through to Level 2. These qualifications will develop a range of key skills that will improve employment prospects and could lead to further study opportunities in the future. Lessons are available from Monday to Friday and attendance is for up to 3 hours once a week. There is the opportunity to study both English and maths and the most suitable programme of study can be discussed with

28

the Jobsmart team at the time of application and assessment of eligibility. After an initial assessment, learners are allocated a class according to their ability. Classes start in September and continue until June the following year with a range of assessments and examinations at the end of the course. It may be possible to complete the examinations early. The contents of all courses are based on developing practical English and maths skills. This prepares and equips learners with those skills needed to progress to work, to participate eectively in society, and to move on to other college courses. Enquiries to study English and maths at Jobsmart (and any assessments that need to be booked) should be done with Diane Holroyd on 01733 863069.

University Centre

Peterborough

Courses provided at UCP help students acquire knowledge and skills relevant to local businesses, industries and public services. The University Centre also provides services direct to the business community, aiding innovation, product and service development and the ‘up-skilling’ of the local workforce. Our portfolio of courses is constantly being revised and updated to take account of the emerging needs and aspirations of our local market. At UCP we are proud of our achievements and these successes are attributed to: • Degree success - Classifications remain high, with 13% of the 2012/13 BA (Hons) English Literature graduates receiving a First-Class Honours and 70% achieving a 2:1 • Employability - Our progression rates into employment or higher study are high with many students working in their chosen fields and developing their CV’s alongside their studies • National Student Survey results – The BSc (Hons) Computing and Information Studies achieved a 96% satisfaction rate in 2013 • Supportive environment - We are dedicated to your success and will do everything in our power to help you achieve your goals. Whether you need some extra help with your studies or just a supportive ear before and during your time with us, we have a number of dedicated members of staff to help you.

46

The ultra modern and contemporary £10 million University Centre located on Peterborough Regional College grounds, in a joint venture with Anglia Ruskin University, has a specially designed 92 seat lecture theatre, a range of multi-purpose/size seminar and teaching rooms, state-of-the-art computer rooms, a cafe and several social areas. In addition, those on Journalism and Media degrees have access to the state-of-the-art Media and Journalism Satellite Centre. Kayleigh Nicholls, Foundation Degree in Early Years, Playwork and Education student: “UCP was the best place for me to study as I live locally, so it allows me to study alongside working and raising a family. All the staff are friendly and supportive and the classes are small compared to traditional routes which means everyone gets more support and guidance than in a larger university. Many of the students here are mature students and with them they bring lots of experience from different areas, which benefit everyone in the class. The facilities at UCP are great: the library has lots of resources and if there’s ever anything you can’t find, the staff there are always very helpful and knowledgeable and help you find what you’re looking for”.
