Mondays Youth Enrichment Fairy Tale Readers Theater

Grades 2nd-4th

Once Upon A Time... Are these magical words to your child? If so, they may enjoy this after school class. While enjoying classic literature, students will also build collaboration, reading, and story-telling skills. Each class will consist of a short Story Time, a new Fairy Tale Readers Theater (a short play requiring no memorized lines, set, or props), and some fun Improv theater games. As with all after school offerings, snack is included! Dates: Mondays: January 13 & 27, February 10 & 24, March 16 & 30, April 13 & 27, May 11 Time: 3:15-5:00 PM 2nd-4th Grade Fee: $45 for all 9 sessions

Join Happy Dancing Turtle staff members for some outdoor fun! We’ll meet select Mondays each month, beginning on Monday, January 13, 2020. In each session, we’ll explore a new part of nature through games, lessons, activities, crafts, and more! We will be mostly outside, so dress for the weather! Tuesdays Youth Enrichment - STEAM Club Invention is an immersive afterschool STEM program Castles, Catapults, and Coats of Arms™     

Grades 1st - 6th

Examines medieval life scientifically. Explores the effects of Archimedes principle by sculpting clay boats that float across a moat while supporting cargo. Allows children to apply science and engineering principles to the construction of a castle wall. Demonstrates and explore the concept of center of gravity and the effect of momentum. Explore the use of simple machines by creating a weight-bearing drawbridge.

This module weaves medieval history, basic scientific principles and hands-on creativity through the challenges presented in every session. While assuming the roles of lords, knights, craftspeople and serfs, participants work together to complete each task. We will cut, color, and create our own spring. Bunnies Tuesday 7th Fee: $5 Hippity Hoppity! It’s bunny time. So let’s hop to it and make some adorable bunnies out of different crafting material. Puzzle Pictures Tuesday 14th & Thursday 16th In this class we will take parts of puzzles and we will then fill in the blanks with our imaginative drawing, coloring, cutting, gluing and painting our way to a perfect puzzle picture. A work of art to hang on your wall. If you have puzzles missing pieces please bring them to class, they’re perfect for this project. Otherwise, I will have some. This is a two-part class to ensure everyone has time to enjoy the creative process. Fee: $10

Community Ed - Theatre

Princess and the Pea Auditions Open auditions for the Spring PR-B Community Theatre production of The Princess and the Pea, an original stage adaptation by Michele L. Vacca. Auditions will be held for adults and students (grades 5 and up) March 4 & 5 from 5:30-6:30 in PR-B High School choir room. You only need to attend one audition or to schedule an alternate audition by contacting janderson@prbschools.org. A variety of roles are available. Auditions will consist of readings from the script and improvisation exercises.

Rehearsals will be Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6:00-8:00 and every day 2 weeks prior to show open. A full rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions. Please bring a list of all schedule conflicts with you to auditions.

RREAL - Fun Science Fun in the Sun: Solar 101

Fee: $20 for all 4 sessions

Join RREAL staff to learn about solar energy! Students will be able to differentiate solar electric vs. solar thermal and will get hands-on learning experiences. Solar energy is now a part of PRB and students will learn and understand the basics of solar energy.    

Light: Take a dive into the sun, understand the energy the sun provides (light & heat energy), create solar book marks. Heat: Learn about solar thermal and its different applications, create solar pizza box ovens. Electric: Learn about solar panels and play with solar robots. Dog Training Sessions Ricky Tic Dog Training Intro to Rally This is a fun sport you can do with your canine companion. You will need a dog that likes to walk on a leash and work for your praise or treats. This class is open to all dogs of all ages and current vaccinations are required. Adult Enrichment & Education Knit Pub at Bites Grill and Bar Knit the “Pine River” Hat Fee: $35 (includes pattern, yarn, and instruction) Enjoy beverages and chat with fellow knitters as instructors walk you through the basics of the “Pine River” hat pattern, an adaptation of the Quintessential hat by Blue Sky Fibers. The hat is knitted in the round with striping. Students will learn basic techniques of knitting in the round, cable cast on, jogless stripes, and carrying yarn. The yarn kit, available at class, includes a pattern, the main color yarn, and three accent yarn colors of beautiful Blue Sky cotton and wool fibers. Students will need to bring 16: #5 and #8 circular needles and #8 double point needles. These are available for sale at Serenity Now Yarn and Alpaca Shop ahead of class time. Beverages and food are available to purchase at Bites. Winter is coming! Plan to spend a cozy evening knitting with us. Experience Level: Advanced Beginner-- students should know the basic of casting on, knitting, purling, and decreasing. Peg Looms (Beginning Weaving) Fee: $50 (Peg Loom included) Learn to weave on a simple peg loom. Looms will be provided at the time of class for participants to use and take home! Students will need to bring sharp scissors to cut through fabric and 1” strips torn from sheets or fabric, which will be woven into a short table runner or placemat. How To Make A “Toothbrush” Rug Fee: $18 A great recycling project using old sheets or other cotton materials that no longer serve their original purpose. You should be able to rip material and make 1-1 1/2 inch strips, approx 36 inches or more in length. (Preferably made before coming to class) Rugs can be made in whatever size and color you want, making small cuts, threading loops and pulling them tight. No sewing! Kids must have appropriate winter gear, only snowshoes supplied. We will play games/races on our snowshoes with a possibility of hiking in the school forest. Free Snacks! Lake Country Nordic Ski Club Lake Country Nordic Ski Club maintains four (4) cross country ski trails in Cass County. These trails are groomed and tracked during the ski season for classic skiing. The trails are located in the central part of Cass County: Cut Lake Trail, about 10 miles west of Pine River on County 2; Goose Lake Trail, about 4 miles west of Longville on County 5; Hiram Trail, about 8 miles north & west of Hackensack on County 6; and Washburn Lake, about 3 miles north and west of Outing on County 48. Cross country skiing is a wonderful winter activity to get out and enjoy the weather and the beauty of our north woods. Since the trails are Grant-in-Aid Trails, a Minnesota Ski Pass is required to use them. We play together in the classroom with casual conversation before having a short group time and a snack together. We wrap up with some time to move by playing in the Early Childhood Gym.

Happy Dancing Turtle continues to offer a class exclusively for Pre-K (4 & 5 yr. old) students! Sessions are held the 2nd Monday of each month, from 10am-11:30am, on the Hunt Utilities Group Resilient Living Campus. We cover a variety of topics, from healthy foods and gardening, to trees, animal habitats, recycling, and solar energy. We do go outside for a portion of each class, so please make sure kids are dressed for the weather. A snack is offered at the beginning of each class. There is no fee for this program, but registration is required. Session dates are Jan. 13, Feb. 10, March 9, April 13, and May 11. School Readiness & Early Childhood Family Education Early Childhood Screening If you have a child between the ages of 3 and 5, call to set up an Early Childhood Screening. This screening is required for entrance into both Kindergarten and the School Readiness Classes. This screening is free of charge and is provided by the Pine River-Backus School District. The screening consists of a height and weight check, vision and hearing screening, developmental screening, and immunization review. Kids Together Classes (Age 3 by September 1st) The Kids Together Classes are preschool classes for our three year old children. They run on Tuesdays & Thursdays, morning & evening classes. You can only enroll in one day AND you must also enroll in one of the family ECFE classes listed below as there is a parent education component of this class.

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) There are multiple Early Childhood Family Education classes available for families with young children at Pine River-Backus Elementary School. Each class includes many activities including crafts, music, stories, snack, and gym time. Classes also provide a parent discussion time for parents to talk together with our parent educator. It is a great time for you to participate in activities with your children. The children love sharing the school experience with mom, dad, grandpa, grandma or any other important adult in their lives.

School Readiness Classes (Age 4 by September 1st) We also offer a variety of school readiness classes for our 4 year old children. These classes will specifically work on all the necessary skills needed to be successful in kindergarten. How To Get Started…In order to best support your learning, we need to know your starting point. All ABE students take an assessment to determine their entry level skills. This assessment, the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is required for ABE enrollment. No prior preparation is necessary to take the TABE. ESL students will take a CASAS assessment. (Please call us to schedule your CASAS test appointment.)
