Law Enforcement & Society with the Miami Police Department
8 Handwritten Letter by Albert Einstein
A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Thank you for making this past year one of the most impressive for The Florida Holocaust Museum! We’ve been very busy teaching and delivering resources about the Holocaust and other genocides throughout our community and the State the Florida. In addition to the thousands of students who visited the Museum to tour our permanent exhibition History, Heritage and Hope, Teaching Trunks filled with resources were sent to Bay, Brevard, Broward, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Miami-Dade, Okaloosa, Osceola, Polk, Pasco, Pinellas, St. John’s, Sarasota, and Sumter counties this year as well as to Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Texas. There has been a refining and expansion of the Museum’s much lauded Speak Up, Speak Now!® program, this year held in the Sarasota, Manatee, Pinellas, and Hillsborough counties. Teacher Workshops were held at the Pinellas County School District, Hillsborough School District, and Tallahassee Community College. Law Enforcement and Society: Lessons of the Holocaust program is collaboration between the The FHM, ADL and the USHMM. This year, Curator of Education Urszula Szczepinska worked with St. Petersburg, Tallahassee, Gainesville, and Clearwater police departments. Additionally, the Museum held its first off-site program for the command staff of Miami Police Department in April. The program was held at the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach using The FHM’s new virtual tour of our permanent exhibition. Since 2014, we have trained all officers from Tampa Police Department and St. Petersburg Police Department. We have also trained command staff from Miami PD and representatives from Clearwater PD, Tallahassee PD, Gainesville PD, Largo PD, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, TIA (Tampa Airport), Gulfport PD, Dade City PD, Temple Terrace PD, Bradenton PD, Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI. In May, we held our Anne Frank Humanitarian Awards ceremonies to honor the extraordinary students who are living the Museum’s mission and making their schools, their communities and the world a better place. On a serious note, the Museum has taken a variety of steps to ensure the security of students and visitors who come to the Museum including increasing security protocols at the entrance with the installation of x-ray equipment and the posting of a trained armed guard. The entire staff and docent core have gone through multiple Active Shooter trainings led by the St Petersburg Police Department. Next fall, we will be showcasing an expanded version of the Museum’s popular original exhibition, Beaches Benches and Boycotts, about the Civil Rights Movement in Tampa Bay and Sarasota, as well as an exhibition about Anne Frank that includes the first virtual reality tour that allows visitors to explore the secret annex where Anne Frank was hidden. And thanks to Richard Rappaport, who has signed an agreement to underwrite an annual antisemitism lecture at the Museum, The Rappaport Family Lecture on Antisemitism will be held each year on October 27th as remembrance of the Tree of Life shooting.
PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS We worked with a number of partners on public programs and projects including: The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s Research Department on the project “Stories of Holocaust Survival: An Economic Perspective,” to preserve the memories of Holocaust survivors on the economics of daily survival. “Legacy Week 2019,” USF St. Petersburg and the Florida Humanities Council to host Dr. Susannah Heschel, Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College and daughter of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, confidant and friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. St. Petersburg Celebration of the Arts and the St. Petersburg Chapter of Hadassah to present USF Professor Sara Munson Deats who spoke on Why The Merchant of Venice is not an Antisemitic Play. The Center for Strategic and Diplomatic Studies (CSDS) at USF and Hillels of the Florida Suncoast to present Dr. Fariborz Mokhtari, whose book In the Lion’s Shadow chronicles the dramatic story of a courageous Iranian diplomat who saved thousands of Iranian Jews from the hands of the Nazis during World War II. USF to present Dr. Golfo Alexopoulos speaking on the 100th year anniversary of the birth of the great Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Feeding Tampa Bay in support of those impacted by Hurricane Michael by offering half priced admission for patrons who donated needed items. Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services and the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee to hold special holiday events for Holocaust Survivors in Tampa Bay and Sarasota.
Cultural arts performances included: Judgement at Nuremberg with Stageworks. A Tribute to the Last Waltz in partnership with the Palladium Theatre. The Florida Orchestra in presentation of A Child of Our Time, a piece composed by English composer Michael Tippett as a response to Kristallnacht. The Soap Myth starring Ed Asner and Tovah Feldshuh with the Tampa Jewish Community Centers and the Sarasota Opera. MGM Studios for a special showing of the movie, Operation Finale. 3
EXHIBITIONS AND COLLECTIONS This was a year of blockbuster exhibitions at the Museum including: Operation Finale: The Capture and Trial of Adolph Eichmann. Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution. The Museum was also chosen alongside Holocaust museums in New York, Chicago and LA to present the museum premiere of the virtual reality film, The Last Goodbye, featuring survivor Pinchas Gutter’s visit to the site of the Nazi death camp Majdanek in Poland, created by USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education. In addition, Stories of Survival: The Florida Holocaust Museum Remembers opened on the Museum’s third floor. Created by Curator of Collections & Exhibitions Erin Blankenship, the exhibition profiles 10 different Survivors and their varied experiences both in the Holocaust and after they immigrated to the US.
Collections, Preservation, and Research Center Serious headway was made on the Museum’s new Collection, Preservation and Research (CPR) Center. While there is a lot more to do before this project is complete, the collection storage area is now climate controlled and is now hosting some of our objects and artifacts. The next step will be purchasing and installing professional racking and object storage solutions. This new space has allowed us to start accepting new art and artifacts into our collection again. We added an estimated 1500 objects during this past year. Highlights include the extraordinary art and artifact collection from Toby Fluek and the Sam & Inge Lewkowitz Collection. If you would like to support the CPR Center through naming opportunities, please contact The FHM’s Development team at 727.820.0100 ext. 251 or ext. 274. 4
NEWS FROM MARKETING Carlos Santana Visits The FHM On April 17th, The FHM hosted a special visitor, Carlos Santana! Santana performed the following day at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg and stopped by the Museum to see the Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution exhibition, which features some of Santana’s own memorabilia, including a guitar and worn satchel. This exhibition, on display through June 30th, explores the extraordinary life of renowned music promoter Bill Graham who helped launch and promote the careers of countless rock & roll artist, including Santana. It also traces the indomitable spirit of a man brought to the United States as an 11-year-old Jewish refugee fleeing the Nazis, fueling a lifelong passion and advocacy for justice. Michael Igel, Board Chair of The FHM, accompanied Santana on the tour of the exhibition and described the experience as “thrilling.” “We had always heard that Bill had a profound impact on Santana’s life, and that they shared a father-son relationship. From the beginning of his tour of the exhibition, it was clear that their bond was exceptionally tight. For the first part of his tour, Santana seemed reflective, and spent most of his time soaking in the artifacts from Bill’s life. He even mentioned to me how terribly he misses having Bill in his life,” Igel said. “Every so often, he would share an interesting, personal tidbit about an item. As we progressed through the exhibition, he became energized, and started sharing all sorts of wonderful stories about Bill, his life and their life together. At one point, my wife Melanie asked, ‘Do you feel like you’re at home?’ He quickly replied, ‘I never left,’” Igel continued. “I am so pleased that we had an opportunity to show Santana that he is a material part of the story that has given us the ability to teach the lessons of the Holocaust through the lens of rock n’ roll. He loved it.”

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Jim Locke Jim Locke began his volunteer commitment to The Florida Holocaust Museum on February 1, 2016 by sending the Museum a brief email saying: “I am a resident of Tierra Verde and Florida for 24 years and recently retired.” He closed that email with an offer to “help wherever needed in the afternoons Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.” A week later he was scheduled to start volunteering. If you visit the Museum on a Monday afternoon, you will find Jim helping to monitor a gallery or explain the use of our audio wands. For each of the past three years Jim averages about 120 hours of service here at the Museum. A few months after starting as a volunteer, Jim casually mentioned that he was traveling to Paris just to take photos. When he returned and shared several great photos we knew that “volunteer photographer” would be an appropriate additional new volunteer assignment for him. He has been helping with photography at many of our special events ever since. If you’ve been on one of the Museum’s special events in the last couple of years, it’s likely you saw Jim Locke behind a camera taking photographs of the event’s participants. Jim came to Florida from Westchester County, New York where, after graduating college, he joined his family’s mail order business called “Casual Living.” In 1989, the business was sold to a Tampa company and Jim agreed to spend a year in Tampa as a consultant to the new owners. After one year in this area, Jim said he realized this definitely was his new home. He bought and managed a travel company, but after about fifteen years, Jim decided that it was time to retire. After about a year of “retirement,” Jim decided to become more active in his community and began volunteering with Southeast Guide Dogs. Jim said he had visited the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington and was interested in this period of history. His motivation to volunteer here at The Florida Holocaust Museum was also shaped by a family member who was held in a P.O.W camp in Germany and another relative who is a Holocaust Survivor. Jim said he is moved by many of the special events he has photographed for us, but is particularly glad to have been a part of “To Life” and our “Kristallnacht” events. He added he had an opportunity to speak with one of our Survivor speakers earlier this year and became even more committed to supporting the Museum’s mission. We need volunteers! For opportunitites and information, please contact John Sanguinett at 727.820.0100 x245 or email@example.com

NEWS FROM EDUCATION Law Enforcement & Society with the Miami Police Department “This is about humanity, it’s about knowing what can happen if we turn a blind eye to bad behavior. As law enforcement officers, we are faced with dilemmas often where tough decisions are made on a daily basis. Strong ethics training programs are important and necessary to ensure awareness and promote sound decisions.” On April 10, 2019, The Florida Holocaust Museum provided the first Law Enforcement and Society: Lessons of the Holocaust (LEAS) program for Miami Police Department. LEAS was established by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in 1999 in Washington D.C., and is suitable for recruit, in-service, and command professionals in law enforcement at the federal, state, and local levels. This unique ethics program has reached over 130,000 officers from the United States and 94 countries worldwide. Since April 2014, The FHM in partnership with the ADL and the USHMM has been teaching the Law Enforcement and Society: Lessons of the Holocaust program to police agencies in Florida. The Tampa Police Department was the first law enforcement agency in Florida to adopt this highly acclaimed course as part of its curriculum and in 2016 we started training the officers from St. Petersburg Police Department. We have now completed training all the officers from Tampa Police Department and St. Petersburg Police Department but will continue offering additional sessions for recruits and new hires.
Yael Hershfield from the ADL and Ursula Szczepinska from The FHM discussing the program with Miami PD command staff.
The program in Miami was the first LEAS session in South Florida and we offered it in response to the request of Chief Jorge Colina. The FHM and ADL partnered with Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach which took on the role of the host site. The program was attended by the command Miami PD command staff at Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach. Credit: Commander Freddie Cruz staff of Miami PD. The agenda included a tour of the Memorial conducted by the Memorial’s Executive Director Sharon Horowitz and educator Danny Reed. The tour was followed by a history session with Ursula Szczepinska, “I strongly feel that all members of The FHM’s Curator of Education & Director of Research, who discussed the law enforcement should receive this role German police played during the Holocaust. Officers examined archival training. It would benefit officers that photographs while learning about the process during which German police officers turned from neutral are in any spectrum of their career.” professionals into some of the worst perpetrators. The second part of the program was led by Yael Hershfield, ADL’s Deputy Regional Director, who focused on the role of law enforcement in a democracy in the U.S. today and the lessons we can draw from the past. During the program Ursula Szczepinska launched a new virtual tour of The FHM. The tour is a result of a partnership with USF Tampa under Barbara Lewis’ leadership. Thanks to this new educational tool, we are able to offer LEAS to police agencies outside of Tampa Bay.
The FHM’s Curator of Education and Director of Research Holocaust Memorial’s Executive Director Sharon Horowitz gives a tour of the site to Miami PD.
“One of the most important messages from the program was that we must learn from historical events. We need to be aware that as police officers we play a vital role in the community. Police officers take an oath to protect and serve, not only to protect property but most important to protect people’s civil liberties and to serve with dignity and respect for all individuals.” 6
THE FHM’S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS Speak Up, Speak Now!® in the Greater Tampa Bay Area “I think it is important to be an upstander because there is so many times where we see someone being bullied or we see something wrong happening and we know that it is wrong, but sometimes we just decide to stay quiet about it. But I think it’s important to be the change that you want to see.” -Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences Since October 2018, The FHM’s Speak Up, Speak Now!® (SUSN) program has been presented to approximately 800 students from across five schools in the Greater Tampa Bay Area. The FHM’s educators, assisted by Museum volunteers, have generated thoughtful dialogue with students on subjects including universal human rights, the pervasiveness of racism and prejudice in our world today, and the power of being an upstander all through the lens of Holocaust education. Students from Athenian Academy in Clearwater, Sarasota Middle School, Sarasota School of Arts and Students at Sarasota Middle School Sciences, Dunedin Highland Middle School, and IMG ask Holocaust Survivor Ed Herman a question about his presentation. Academy in Bradenton engaged with presentations on Holocaust history, Holocaust-era poetry and art Students at Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences working on their art projects. responses to the Holocaust, identity and indifference in Night and other writings of Elie Wiesel, Holocaust memorials, Japanese-American and African-American experiences during World War II, and the 1936 Nazi Olympics.
“Students in school need the “SUSN” program because today racism, bullying, and discrimination is an extremely huge part of the way kids treat others here in this school, so I think it would really benefit them and help them understand that it is not a joke and they need to take it seriously.” -Dunedin Highland Middle School Every program was tailored to compliment what the students were covering in their classes and included an art component. Students also met with a Holocaust survivor and talked with that survivor about their experiences during the Holocaust. We would like to extend our gratitude to Alexandra Band, Vice Chair External Affairs on The FHM’s Board, for connecting the Museum with Sarasota Middle School, and to Jessi Sheslow and The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee for helping to coordinate speakers for the program. Our final program of the school year took place back at Sarasota Middle School in early May. We worked with 168 history and ELA students presenting Holocaust history and working with the students on an art project.

Thank you for your support:
The Speak Up, Speak Now!® program was incredibly successful this school year and working with all of these bright and talented students has been rewarding for all of The FHM’s educators. We are looking forward to what the next school year will bring!

NEWS FROM EXHIBITIONS & COLLECTIONS Handwritten Letter by Albert Einstein The FHM will unveil a rare letter handwritten by Albert Einstein on June 28, 2019! The letter will go on view in the Museum’s permanent exhibition, History, Heritage and Hope, located on the first floor. Earlier this year, the letter was donated by past board chair and longtime Museum volunteer Irene Weiss and her brother Peter Cohn. The handwritten letter became on open letter printed in der Aufbau, a journal printed for German-speaking Jews which was founded in 1934 in New York City. It was published on November 16, 1945 to coincide with the seven-year anniversary of Kristallnacht. The letter was a plea to the Jewish community of the time to render assistance to Survivors of the Holocaust while calling on Great Britain to open immigration quotas for Survivors to emigrate to Palestine. The letter is a handwritten draft of the printed version, complete with Einstein’s edits and signature. Siegfried Kurt Glaser, grandfather of the donors, assisted Einstein in its composition while both were working at Princeton University in 1945. The two had originally known each other before the war in Germany and Glaser was also a refugee Original letter written by Einstein. The FHM to the United States. Permanent Collection, donated by Irene Weiss and Peter Cohn. Most people know that Albert Einstein was a physicist and Nobel Laureate, but he was also a German Jewish refugee. While on a visit to the U.S. in 1933, he opted to remain here instead of returning to Germany after the Nazi rise to power the same year. Taking matters into his own hands, he and his wife personally vouched for other Jews seeking to flee Germany and at the same time helped found the International Relief Effort which still exists today. The FHM is looking for original objects, documents, and photographs that tell the stories of those who suffered during the Holocaust. For donation inquiries, please contact Erin Blankenship at email@example.com.

Loss and Affirmation: Illustrations and Drawings by William Pachner — Opening July 27th
William Pachner was born in Moravia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (later Czechoslovakia) in 1915. He left his home and family to pursue a career in commercial illustration in the United States in 1939 only a few days before the Nazis occupied Czechoslovakia. Pachner moved to Chicago and became the art director at Esquire Magazine. When America entered World War II, he felt compelled to take a more active part in the war effort and left his position to enlist in the army but was rejected. Instead of returning to the magazine, Pachner devoted himself to free-lance antifascist illustrations for Colliers, Cosmopolitan and other popular magazines of the day. Untitled. William Pachner. Ink and gouache. The FHM Permanent Collection, donated by Ann and Charles Pachner.
When the war ended in 1945 and he received confirmation that his parents and brother were murdered, Pachner said: “Never again will my hand be hired. From now on, I shall use whatever gifts I have to bear witness to my experience.” With a family to support, he left the well-paid world of commercial art and became a studio artist.
Turning to his work, Pachner used pen and paper, paint and canvas to communicate his grief and his reaction to man’s inhumanity to man. The artworks made during the period directly following the war convey feelings of despair, anger and bitterness. Following these, his work focused on human connection, comfort, and affirmation. This collection was donated in 2016 by Pachner’s children, Anne and Charles Pachner. The works are markedly different than those by the artist already held and exhibited by the Museum and were painted during World War II and in the years immediately following. 8
This exhibition opens to the public on July 27, 2019 and will be on view through January 5, 2020.
DONOR SPOTLIGHT Lois and Peter Pardoll Lois and Peter Pardoll have played an essential role at The FHM since its founding. Larry Wasser was made the director of The FHM in downtown St. Petersburg in “an old abandoned bank building” and asked Lois and Peter if they were interested in being Founding Members of the Museum. Both agreed that The FHM’s mission was important to them, and they wanted to be a part of the vision. They became members in 1998. Lois and Peter are Life Members, Docents, and Lois served as a Board Member, the Board Chair, and on the Advisory Committee. The Pardoll family’s passion for Holocaust remembrance and education was sparked when they participated in The International March of the Living, an annual educational program, bringing people to Poland and Israel to study the history of the Holocaust. They participated in 1996 and 2000. The hope of the program is to inspire participants to fight against racism and injustice by witnessing the atrocities of the Holocaust. The experience Lois, Peter, and their children had during the March of the Living impacted them to make a difference in their own community, prompting them to become very involved in The FHM. Lois and Peter helped raise money for students in South Florida to attend March of the Living through the Museum every year. Lois and Peter’s goal is “to help bring Holocaust awareness to first the area [of Tampa Bay] and in short order, the state of Florida and beyond.” In addition, Lois and Peter founded the Pardoll Family Lecture Series at The FHM. The series was created to “bring Holocaust education, all human rights and genocide information to the public, free of charge,” said Lois. From lectures about the Freedom Riders in the Civil Rights movement in 1961, to World War II Japanese American Incarceration, the Pardoll Family Lecture Series has opened dialogue for these difficult events in history. For Lois and Peter, education is at the heart of why they support the Museum. Since they had family members who died during the Holocaust, it is especially important to them that these horrific events never be forgotten. “The museum brings awareness to injustices in the world, to me and my husband it is very important since the mission is to fight against that and educate the young,” said Lois. Lois and Peter met at Camp Blue Star, a Jewish summer camp in North Carolina. Today, they reside in Treasure Island, Florida. The Florida Holocaust Museum is very thankful for their dedication and support. To learn more about giving opportunities and ways to support The FHM, please contact Debra Marcus at 727.820.0100 x274 or firstname.lastname@example.org.

Stories of Survival: The FHM Remembers On display now
While each man, woman and child who survived the Holocaust experienced incomprehensible loss and suffering, each account is different. The FHM is dedicated to recording and retelling the experiences of Holocaust Survivors. To that end, we are still recording interviews with Survivors and their families, collecting original documents, photographs and objects from the Holocaust and sharing these invaluable resources with students, educators and our visitors. This exhibition shares just a few of their stories.
The Sam and Inge Lewkowitz Collection On display now
In the latest special exhibit of objects from The Florida Holocaust Museum’s permanent collection, the stories of Sam and Inge Lewkowitz are highlighted. Sam Lewkowitz and Inge London were forced to the edges of society by the Nazis during World War II. Sam was forced to flee Germany to Shanghai, China. Inge was trapped in Berlin during the war and was constantly under the eyes of the Nazi regime. After the war they met in the United States and married, beginning a new phase of their lives. Central to the mission of The FHM is the program to collect, preserve, and make available to the public the historical record and artistic and interpretation of the Holocaust and other genocides. For donation inquiries, please contact Erin Blankenship, The FHM’s Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at email@example.com. 11
FALL & WINTER HAPPENINGS
In October, The FHM presented a special program with Rolling Stone photographer Baron Wolman. Wolman was Rolling Stone’s Chief Photographer when the magazine was first published 50 years ago. This was a unique opportunity for the public to view his iconic photos and listen to him speak about his memorable encounters with Bill Graham and rock stars of his time.
This fall, The FHM’s Board Chair Mike Igel gave philanthropist and community leader Bill Edwards a tour of Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution. This extraordinary exhibition is on display through June 30th.
This December, The FHM brought its Speak Up, Speak Now!® program to Sarasota Middle School for the first time! Thanks to Assistant Principal Stacey Loos and Dr. Jennifer Jaso, we were able to work with close to 300 students. We discussed with the students some of the main events during the Holocaust and helped them discover how relevant this history is today. Students had a chance to meet with Holocaust Survivors: Helga Melmed, Marie Silverman, Betty Grebenschikoff, Rifka Glatz, Ed Herman, and Jackie Albin. 12
On November 9th, The FHM held its annual Kristallnacht commemoration service and candle-lighting with Holocaust Survivors. Included in the commemoration service was musical themes played from A Child of Our Time.
In November, The FHM received a large donation of personal care items for those impacted by Hurricane Michael from the University of South Florida’s Upward Bound Program! The Museum joined with Feeding Tampa Bay in support of those impacted by Hurricane Michael.
This winter, The FHM sent one of its Teaching Trunks to Ivy Schamis at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. Schamis is a teacher at the school and teaches a semesterlong History of the Holocaust course for juniors and seniors. Pictured above are students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School working with resources from The FHM’s Teaching Trunk. What an honor to have known Walter for even a small part of his life. I met him six years ago when I first interviewed for my position and was overwhelmed by his passion and pride in the institution he had founded. But what really struck me were the people he had brought together to help make his vision a reality. Not only were the people I was meeting extraordinary, their respect and deference to Walter was clear. Just before his 90th birthday, Walter accompanied me to Tallahassee to visit with the Governor and the Legislature. When we walked into the Capitol building, Walter bloomed. The years fell off of him and I could see the man he had been in his youth. That same deference and respect our community leaders had shown was apparent in our state leaders as well. So many of our legislators asked to take a picture with Walter. I had always been told that Walter was the reason that Florida was one of the first states to mandate Holocaust education in the public schools. It was his efforts, his intelligence and charisma that drove home the importance of Holocaust education in today’s world. That day, at 90 years old, that same intelligence and charisma was evident to all. One of the last things Walter said to me was “You’re doing a good job, honey. Keep it up!” I keep those words in my heart. Myself, along with the entire staff of the Museum, are committed to furthering Walter Loebenberg’s vision and the mission of The Florida Holocaust Museum. We are honored to have known and learned from Walter and are continually inspired by his passion to remember those who suffered and died in the Holocaust. We will continue to encourage Holocaust Survivors to share their stories, build an institution where people of all races and creeds could learn the terrible consequences of unchecked hatred and prejudice, educate future generations on the lessons of the Holocaust, and create a better future for All.

“Your story moved me, emotionally, in a way only a witness of the Nazi horrors could. The Holocaust was not what it is now before you spoke to us… It seemed more like just another event, a dot on a timeline. Now, I see that it is more than that. It was intolerance towards millions of people, mass genocide for no reason other than their religion. It is alarming to think this could happen again. But, it could. There is intolerance all over the world, even here, in the U.S.” - Student 16
