MIXED USE
WHY US? Good design doesn’t just happen. It’s the result of the painstaking pursuit for perfection. Remember the last time you encountered a building that truly captivated you? Probably not. Because, we believe, most buildings start out as a vision and end up as “just a building”. Oftentimes, through the fault of no one… or everyone…those visions morph into something less than stellar. But why? We believe that there are architects and then there are designers. Architects seek the means to an end. Designers don’t seek, we search. At DAG we spend an inordinate amount of time listening and looking. No stone un-turned. First from the client, then the community and along the way the environment enters the picture. All the while, as we search, we begin to uncover bits and pieces of ideas that over time take shape. Not in a vacuum, but rather across a spectrum of places. Our search is informed by our deep experience in various building types. Each type has a pri-mary function: office buildings support commerce, residential celebrates life, hotels promote exploration, whether for business or pleasure, and retail causes commerce to happen. Some like to refer to a combination of these building types as “mixed use”. We, on the other hand, prefer to look at the uses as a delicate blending of needs and desires. Our task as designers is to look beyond the basics of creating a mixture of uses. Rather, we seize the opportunity to shape a building based upon our client’s vision, and the market’s needs, sacrificing little to gain much. How do we do it? It’s rather simple actually. We listen. We apply our knowledge. But most importantly, we throw away conventional thought, and instead we allow our design to captivate. Everyone.
