Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was an Indian independence activist and politician who formulated the Hindu nationalist philosophy of Hindutva. He was a leading figure in the Hindu Mahasabha.

Serving as the president of the Hindu Mahasabha, Savarkar endorsed the idea of India as a Hindu Rashtra. He popularized Hindutva to create a collective "Hindu" identity as an essence of Bharat (India).

Every person is a Hindu who regards and owns this Bharat Bhumi, this land from the Indus to the seas

Champions of Freedom is a series celebrating national (INDIA) and international heroes who fought for the independence of their people and their countries. For six weeks from American Independence Day (July 4 th ) to Indian Independence Day (Aug 15 th ), everyday we would be featuring one national and one international champion of freedom.
