Home tour can spur home ideas, local designer says

O

ut with the old, in with the new. If there’s a season associated with that sentiment, it’s spring – time for cleaning, time for planting a garden, time for freshening up your space. If you have such a renewal in mind, the 2018 Flatirons Tour of Homes may be just the type of weekend infotainment you’re looking for. Over two weekends, May 5-6 and May 12-13, visitors will be able to see 22 homes, both new and remodeled in Boulder County and suburbs north of Denver. The tour’s offerings range from luxury dwellings to starter homes and include active living, lowmaintenance and green homes. Appropriately enough, that just the kind of breadth of design experience offered by Boulder’s Design Studio Interior Solutions, a sponsor of the tour. The tour can serve as a valuable tool for those looking to remodel or redesign their homes, says Design Studio CEO and Owner Judy Goldman. “It allows people to stand in the space, determine and pay attention to what works for them and what does not work for them,” she says. “Do they like a large kitchen island or a small kitchen island? It gives the an opportunity to stand in the space, walk around and stand in various spots. You expose yourself to the way the space feels. You can look with an eye toward what you lean toward and what you lean away from.” 8

And take notes! Goldman says that keeping a record of your likes and dislikes makes it easier to communicate with a designer when you are looking to remodel or redesign your home. “Go to a designer. Say ‘I liked all these things. How do I think about bringing that into my home,’” she advises. Goldman should know. Her firm recently moved into a brand new, 6,000-square-foot space on the corner of Spine and Lookout in Boulder. Goldman says Colorado is different than some other parts of the country when it comes to design. “The trend is to use space wisely, (rather than) want to be better than the Joneses,” she says. “It how you make your space work for the way you live with kids, dogs, outdoor sports. It’s designed for a person’s lifestyle.” That includes “making the home more liveable and bright, and bringing in the outdoors,” she says. “It’s taking advantage of the beautiful skies outside and the weather.” As you might expect in a place so influenced by the outdoors, Coloradans prefer a more natural color pallette, Goldman says. The relatively neutral background allows the designer to create a big splash in certain areas. Sometimes the design team uses murals for a special effect, such as when they did a bathroom wall of blues and whites that looked like a watercolor painting. Goldman adds that wallpaper is

back with new, stunning patterns, and multi-layer draperies can create a lovely layered effect that adds dimension to a room. “We can take a neutral palette and change the windows and art, and it changes the composition,” she says. Another tip from Goldman is to consider quality, especially when buying furniture. “If you go out to a chain store, the life of the furniture is 3 to 5 years. It’s made of plywood and cardboard,” she says. In contrast, a well-made piece of furniture lasts for many years, she adds. “You pay for reupholstery every 8, 12 or 20 years.” She says the idea of buying high quality items meant to last is especially appealing in eco-conscious Colorado where the thought of furniture taking up space in a landfill is distressing to many people. As for the kitchen, to many people the heart of the home, Goldman says customers are moving away from the austere, white look. “They want the kitchen to reflect who they are and how they live,” she says. One of the big developments in kitchens is number of materials that are now available, she adds. “Technology is changing lighting, backsplashes, countertops, flooring and cabinetry,” Goldman says. “It’s remarkable what’s happening.” For example, you can install glass that can darken when you tap it to shade against the sun, a technology that comes from aviation. Whether a client wants the latest technology or something more familiar, Goldman says the most important thing is listening to clients and helping them realize their vision. “We’re very client-centric,” Goldman says. “What they bring to the table is their desire.
