Housing studio Site : Pondicherry

Site area - 7000sqm Project brief

The aim of the project was to design the houses for French and Tamil people according to their culture. A large unit of 120sqm, medium unit of 80 sqm, small shops, guest houses and common gathering space were to be catered into design. Concept The design was envisioned to create green spaces between clusters. The units were arranged in a way for cross ventilation. The units on ground floor had an open and a semi open space. The entrances of houses were facing the main road.No vehicles were allowed inside the site. The shops and guest houses were kept near main road so it could be easily accessible by public.

Institutional studio Site : C.N. Vidhyalaya,Ambawadi

Site area - 2000-3000 sqm Project brief

House of sports The aim of the project was to design a center which promotes physical and mental develoment including individual and group based community sports. To revive old sports and games indoor as well as outdoor. The following sports like squash, boardgames, judo, boxing, pilate, yoga, gym, aerobics, table tennis, billiards, chess, carrom and arena for sports competition were to be catered into design. Concept As we had to design in C.N. Vidhyalaya, which is a lush green campus I came up with the idea of ‘Connection with nature’.The idea was achieved by making parallel walls and by creating a space which opens out into nature. The spaces opened into axial direction in which one axis leads to cricket ground and running track. There was not any specific entry of the building. The central courtyard was made so there could be visual connection between different activities. 11

As every element has its own identity and each element should be well defined. So, I made exposed concrete and brick building to maintain the integrity of every element. Stairs didn’t touch the wall as it is a separate element.

Working drawings Site : C.N. Vidhyalaya,Ambawadi

For working drawings, we had to resolve our institutional design in terms of structure, spaces and architectural elements. So, first I resolved the structure of the building as if beams and columns, junctions where the material changes. Then I worked upon elevation in which I decided to make a groove between column and beam junction to define it. As, I had exposed brickwork for which I had to match brick course line and detail out how skirting will be done. For verandah like spaces, I had given a dropslab for lighting and other services to run through it.

Parametric design(ongoing) Villa Contemporaire

Urban form

The aim of the studio is to generate design responses with evolutionary computation. The pareto-front(most suitable design) can be obtained by comparing and observing the values of different phenotypes. In this exercise, we have to redesign villa contemporaire by deciding new strategies. Aim To create units with different sizes. To create terraces at different levels by varying number of floors. To reduce exposure on walls by staggering units. To maximize shadow on ground by increasing overall height of the built. To create semi open areas in between units by completely removing some units. To divide the huge courtyard into two parts. 21

The fitness criteria are decided according to the context and enviromental conditions. The required outcomes are divided into five fitness criteria. Effective fitness criteria is average of all the fitness criterias. Maximize shadow

Maximize average distance between semi open spaces
