Cool Colors Soothing hues that are calming, tranquil and refreshing. Cool colors visually recede, acting as a serene backdrop for your space.

Blue

Classic, cool and restful.

Blues can open up a room, keeping the feeling airy and refreshing.

Green Calming and harmonious. Green says balance and beauty, drawing from the shades of nature.

Violet

Restful and serene. Violet

can be regal, spiritual or delicate depending on its saturation and pink undertones.

Varying intensities of color also play a key role in making a statement.

Pastels Beautiful whites to faint hints of color. Watery blues, pale greens, refreshing violets. Pastels visually retreat and add a sense of openness.

Neutrals Calming, yet sophisticated. More than white, gray and tan. They’re any soft tone that blends into the background to create a subtle backdrop.

Midtones Darker than pastels, lighter than deeptones, and more muted than brights. Midtones begin to enliven a room with more color saturation.

Deeptones Warm and moody; rich and luxurious. Deeptones visually advance, adding rich intensity to a room that makes a statement.

Inspiration is all around you. Inspiration can come from so many different places. The world we live in. The objects that surround us. Everywhere we look, our world is filled with a palette of colors; from the warm, inviting shade of a room in candlelight, to the vivid tones of ripening fruit, to the cool colors of the seashore. Colors catch our eye. They spark ideas. They reflect moods. As you look at the colors of your world, choose those that help to create your own personal statement.

The Color Process To begin just the right

the journey of choosing

colors, there are a few key steps that will

help you on your way.

Define Your Space Note what elements will not be changing. First, you need to take into account everything that will be staying in the room, including flooring, window treatments, fabric, wallcoverings, countertops and brick or stone accents. This will help you to consider what colors are already part of the overall room scheme. Note the architecture of your space. What does your room say on its own? Is it modern, classic, colonial? Do you want to enhance the feeling of the space or create an entirely new feeling? Note the open transitions that exist into other rooms. Does this room open to other rooms or hallways? Color can change from room to room, but be aware how adjacent rooms may complement or clash. Establish a transition color scheme so all the rooms and spaces move nicely.

What is your inspiration for this space? How will the room be used? Consider the functionality of the room when starting to select color. Will there be a lot of reading done in this space? Will it be used for family congregating or more formal entertainment? Then, more importantly, ask yourself “How do I want to feel in this room?” “What mood do I want to create?” This is an important question that underlies what defining your home and making it “you” is all about. Arm yourself with ideas. Gather your favorite pictures, magazine clippings – that treasured vase with the rose cast. Now is the time to look at everything that will help bring into context what is important to

Choose Your Colors

Consider Lighting Sources

Select your dominant or base color. What is your main color family - blue, green, brown? Is it a cool or

exposures have more of a tendency to drain a color’s vibrancy. Take into account the artificial lighting used in the room. Incandescent bulbs tend to make colors appear more warm, while halogen light does the opposite. Lampshades also make a difference. A white paper shade gives off cooler light and a creamy, off-white shade provides a warmer light. Once you’ve viewed the colors in their actual environment you will get a true sense of the feeling they create.

Create a Mini Color Scheme Board Collect chip samples of the colors you’ve selected. If you need a larger area to view, buy small paint samples and paint your colors on an oversized board. Then gather samples of any fabric, flooring, or wall covering that you may use and lay the elements together, overlapping your colors. Now step back and look at the total palette you’ve created. This is the best way to determine if your selections truly create the look that you’ve envisioned with the rest of the elements in your room.
