FOREWORD

BAHRAIN AND SPORTS INFLUENCING THE GCC AND THE WORLD Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth. In Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, we are dedicated to providing all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned.

“HEALTH IS A LIFESTYLE AND I CHOSE IT.” HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa

I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skill helps individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity

to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare

to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which has an immense traditional value, although we must not forget that there are other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. I welcome PowerUp’s continued support in all areas of sports. I hope that more and more people will support local teams and sporting initiatives in their communities; educating the youth on the benefits of healthy living and a healthy lifestyle. PowerUp is a good source of information to get you started.

NUTRITION

THE CLEAN FIFTEEN By Dawn Morales (Certified Group Fitness Instructor and Holistic Health Coach)

Tr ying to find a spot on the trendy health food bandwagon is not that easy. “Go organic, they said, it’s better for you!” But whenever you go to the organic aisle, your jaw drops at the prices of bananas just for your breakfast bowl. Does this sound familiar?

O

rganic foods are more expensive, and although we should invest in our health, we shouldn’t skimp on the healthy conventional foods (yes, they exist) for fewer organic items to cover your whole diet. A good way to go about this is to stay updated on The Environmental Working Group’s Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen. The Clean Fifteen is the EWG’s list of least contaminated produce. Meanwhile, the Dirty Dozen contains the most pesticide-contaminated produce which are the ones you should swap organic for.

SKIN CARE

HE ALTHY SKI N ALL SUMMER LONG It is easy to neglect our skin in summer – especially in the scorching heat. The warmer, more humid weather and prolonged exposure to the sun rays can bring with it a fair share of skin related problems. The hottest time of the year needs a cautious skincare routine for you to enjoy it to the max.

T

here are several things you need to do to best take care of your skin during this sunny season. Dr Mohamed Moukhtar, Medical and Scientific Affairs Manager at LEO Pharma GCC, has mined out a few of them.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE SUN One of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to safeguard it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems — as well as increase the risk of skin cancer. For the complete sun protection, you should use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 that can

DR MOHAMED MOUKHTAR

The most important skin care routine that everyone should follow at all times regardless of their skin type would be to moisturise regularly and drink plenty of water. It is also highly recommended to use sun protection when staying under the sun for extended periods of time.

filter out a out of ra s, seek shade when the sun’s rays are the strongest, wear sunglasses that block ra s and wear protective clothing that covers your skin.

DON’T SMOKE

Smoking makes your skin look older and contributes to wrinkles. It also narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin, which decreases lood ow This drains the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are essential to skin health. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin the fi res that give our skin strength and elasticity. Also, the repetitive facial expressions you make when smoking — such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke — can contribute to wrinkles.

TREAT YOUR SKIN GENTLY

- Daily cleansing and shaving can take a toll on your skin. To keep it gentle, you should limit bath or time and use warm water rather than hot.

EAT HEALTHILY

A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins.

MANAGE STRESS

ncontrolled stress can ake our skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin and a healthy state of mind, take steps to manage your stress.

ALWAYS UP FOR A GOOD PADDLING We knew we were up for a per fect day at Beach Culture when we learned about Stand Up Paddling. We enjoyed the per fect scener y and had an amazing view of under water and saw things one could never see from land. Here are their top five tips that will make a difference to your future paddle boarding sessions.

1

YOUR LEASHLINE IS YOUR LIFE-LINE!

Make sure you have a leash on to prevent losing the board as it may drift away from you when falling in the water on a windy day. Being stranded in the water and having to swim back could be quite a fun work out but not necessarily very convenient nor safe.

2

ALWAYS PADDLEBOARD AGAINST THE WIND

The purpose is for you to come back quickly with the wind in case of emergency. A lot of people enjoy ‘downwinders’, where you paddle at high speeds with the help of the wind, but

just make sure you have someone to pick you up at the second point. Get a group together, and you’re ready to go!

THE HANDLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BOARD IS THE BEST AREA TO STAND AROUND

3

Put your feet next to each other about shoulder distance apart, preferably facing forward!

CORRECT STROKE SAVES YOU A LOT OF ENERGY

4

This will get you riding like a pro! Before initiating the stroke, make sure you stretch your arm open all the way

out as if you’re punching someone right in front of you. Make sure your blade is facing forward and is deep in the water. Push downwards with your top arm as you initiate your stroke.

FALLING MEANS YOU’RE PUSHING YOUR BOARD’S LIMITS TO THE MAX

5

This means you are learning something new every time you fall. The next time you go out for a session, your muscles would have memorised that balance point and with a bit of focus, you probably won’t fall again! For more information: Beach Culture Tel. +973 77363677

omen had long been present on the margins of cycling club culture. Cycling clubs have a reputation as being competitive, unwelcoming and sometimes a bit scary. But this was not the case with the club called the Cycling Bees. The group started in December 2016 when Sarah AlSammak and Dana Zubari used to train for Ironman and ended up doing more fun rides where they stop and take pictures of lovely places in Bahrain.

FRIENDSHIP AND SUPPORT

Admit it, having a wide social network of people to eat cake with between rides is kind of awesome. When Cycling Bees started posting pictures and fun videos of their rides on social media, a lot of interest rose up. Many of those interests were for females who want to start cycling, but looking for a group to join, or routes to go to and advice on cycling. The group then decided to take those requests seriously

and started taking them out for short rides until the group grew. The group has grown dramatically, from 2 riders to 20 riders by end mid of February 2017. The female riders were all beginners and would like to explore Bahrain on a bike in a fun way. Cycling Bees do not leave anyone behind during rides. They would always regroup and wait for the slowest rider and stick together. Riding aside, the group is known for their coffee/karak/breakfasts stops which make some of them motivated to get on a bike and ride! The rule is, no breakfast, no rides!

IT’S A ‘BEE’ THING

Cycling Bees aim to increase riders’ road confidence, encourage women from all backgrounds to join and to show them being a Hijabi girl doesn’t mean they can’t ride a bicycle. Part of their routine is a ‘Jump Shot’! It’s a bee thing! Cycling Bees rides on Saturday mornings. They

usually start from different locations and do different routes. The group focuses more on the enjoyment of the ride and the satisfaction of a better ride with great friends than the speed they are travelling. Be aware of the bees- if you don’t put their sticker on the car they might sting you!

The name ‘Cycling Bees’ came from Sarah’s bike (president of the club) – her bike is bright yellow and black and looks like a bumble bee! he i e was o ficially called a Bee during Ironman Bahrain 2016 where she participated as a team called Betty and the Bee

BASKETBALL

The women of today have come a long way on what they were branded to do to what they do now. It is clear that female athletes have well established themselves in the sports world. From dictated by the society to be quiet, obedient, attractive nurturers, these women are becoming a legend of their own. They proved that in the end, winning does not depend on being male or female. Watch them as they break down barriers and stereotypes in the sporting world.

BASKETBALL

W

omen’s Basketball today has changed. Views about women’s physical appearance, athletic ability, and participation in sports, are evident through their increased involvement in the field eople s perceptions may have not changed much but as more and more women play basketball, the more the society is accepting that they are gold at what they do. The A CO ladies tea commenced in 2012 and was officiall registered with the Bahrain Basketball Association in 2013. We had a conversation with two of the A CO asket all Tea , and their passion for the sport is contagious.

ON HOW IT STARTED

Zahra Ghanbari: The very first sport pla ed was net all when was living in New Zealand. Netball and basketball are somewhat si ilar However, had to stop playing when my family decided to move to the A When started school, had no friends, and it eca e ver lonel then decided to join the basketball team (having no experience playing basketball), and it really helped me in socialising

and making friends. The team pla ed with eca e a fa il throughout my school years, and that’s all thanks to the beautiful sport of basketball. Arwa Hossam Ali: oined the asket all tea in first ear of universit t was like love at first ga e Fro that o ent, knew wanted to make this my main game and be the best in it. Basketball gave me the chance to show all my skills more than any other sports, that’s why for me, it’s unique.

ON GENDER STEREOTYPES

Zahra Ghanbari: Generally, people assume that basketball is a men’s sport. One of those people is dad However, didn t let that get to e oined the basketball club in the U.A.E at an early age and continued it when oved to ahrain oining A CO ladies basketball team. Lucky for the female basketball players in Bahrain, there are many supporters of the Fe ale Basketball League. Arwa Hossam Ali: don t focus on the stereotypes. nstead, seek for an inspiration continuousl look up to the people who have achieved what would

like to e in the future use this as an inspiration prefer no gender ecause honestl believe that any individual can achieve anything if he/ she ust have confidence in it.

ON TRAININGS

Zahra Ghanbari: have a full-ti e o , ut make sure to attend most of the practices. We practice three times a week. Our practices are not only filled with practising basketball, but our coach

(Murteza Mohammed) also makes sure that we have our share of cardio, strength exercises, and circuit training, all while practising our defence, offence, dribbling, and more! Arwa Hossam Ali: f ou really want something, you will do everything in your power to ake it work t all takes time management and a consistent schedule. We have training three times a week that lasts an hour and a half t s an intense practice as we train for particular skill followed by a few minutes of ga e ti e Our training is tough but fun to share with co-pla ers which alwa s look forward to.

ON ADVICE TO WOMEN IN SPORTS

Zahra Ghanbari: ractice reall does ake perfect f you keep trying, practising and devoting your time to basketball, you can become something big. Arwa Hossam Ali: My advice is always to work hard and to never give up after a failure. The more you fail, the closer you get to succeed.

THE COACH SAYS… THE BEST THING ABOUT THE TEAM

Coach Murte is proud to be coaching such a well-driven and successful team. He described them as respectful and hardworking. “They care about each other, and they push each other to greatness!” he said.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

The areas that need improvement is the team’s shooting skills. The team has to be more exposed to leagues which will make them

I prefer no gender because I honestly believe that any individual can achieve anything if he or she just have confidence in it. Arwa Hossam Ali gain more experience. The more they play and practice, the more they become skilled.

COACHING AN ALL FEMALE TEAM

Coach Murte doesn t go easy with the team. Gone are the days when we think that women are feeble. There is no difference in gender when it comes to basketball players, and they all get the same treatment.

BOXING

MOVE LIKE A PRO BOXER It’s no coincidence that people who love boxing rock killer physiques. Boxing for fitness is now a thing. It burns tonnes of calories and tones your entire body. But before you launch into a training regime, check out these basic moves to get you started.

T

he boxing stance: The boxing stance is the base of any good boxer. The key is to put yourself in a position where you can throw solid punches with both hands, while also being able to defend. Hands up, elbows tucked in, feet shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent and back heel lifted.

turns as you approach the full extension of the punch with the pal facing the oor on impact. Visualise a snap with your elbow and hand hitting the target, rather than a full arm movement. Make sure to lead the jab (and all other punches for a matter of fact) with the knuckles! The beauty of the jab is that it can be thrown from nearly any position.

THE JAB

THE CROSS

The jab is the bread and butter punch of boxing; used offensively, defensively and in establishing range. Extend the front glove while staying in the boxing stance. The hand

34

POWERUP | JULY 2017

The cross, also commonly known as the straight, is a primary power punch. While being very powerful, it often leaves you vulnerable to a quick counterattack. The

BOXING

motion is very similar to that of a jab. However, you will be throwing the rear hand. The key difference here is to turn that back foot and sit down on the punch as this is where the power and the force are generated; with the twist of the foot that leads a twist in the hips.

REASONS WHY BOXING IS AN EXCELLENT WAY TO WORKOUT BUILDS ENDU R A NCE A ND STA MI NA The high-intensity movements coupled with lower intensity recovery periods significantly develops strength.

THE HOOK

The hook is a ver e i le punch the can be used at all ranges but is most effective at mid-to-close range. From the boxing stance, rotate the lead foot and simultaneously rotate your upper body while throwing the punch. Make sure the elbow makes a 90-degree angle with the palm of your hand facing your body. Swing into the punch and make sure to recover immediately after hitting the target. Get that hand back up right after throwing the punch!

THE UPPERCUT

The uppercut is probably the most improperly thrown punch by many beginners. Everyone wants to have a powerful uppercut, so they try to exaggerate the movements; with the result looking like something out of Street Fighter rather than traditional boxing. To throw an uppercut start off in the boxing stance however instead of extending your lead glove forward (like the jab) or at an angle (like the hook), lower your glove. Then rotate your body while simultaneously raising your glove towards the chin of your opponent with your glove facing your body. Just like the hook, don’t get lazy and make sure to get that hand right back up to protect yourself after throwing the punch.

TOTA L BODY WORKO U T

And the most important part of boxing, keep training! Practice makes perfect and once you get the technique down, continue drilling these punches to try to develop them.

DR. SAQER AL KHALIFA

President, Bahrain Triathlon Association and Assistant Undersecretary for Youth Authorities and Centres of Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs

eing committed to this prestigious event, I have managed to convince three of my cycling friends to join: Abdulla Abdul Salam, Ebrahim Touq, and Sara Al Salam. It is summer time in Bahrain. We’ve never done a Grand Fondo before, and not to mention that we don’t have mountains around to train in. Where and how to train were the biggest factors we were facing. Time went by, and we reached Alta Badia, the village famously known for cycling in summer and skiing in winter. This area is suitable for hiking and rock climbing as well. One thing I noticed? ver od is fit and health in Alta Badia. I cannot even put into words how beautiful this place is. Without any hesitation, I can say that I have never ever in my life seen a more beautiful place than this. You wouldn’t believe it is real until you actually move closer to the mountains. It is

B

As the world is getting smaller through increasing means of communications, I found out about the 31st edition of the Maratona Dles Dolomites. It is basically a Gran Fondo, a cycling event somewhat equivalent to a Marathon for running. Searching further into this event, I found out that it is where most of the action of the Giro d’Italia takes place, in the Dolomites Mountains part of the North Italy Alps, also a United Nations Heritage Site.

40

POWERUP | JULY 2017

more beautiful than any poet can describe. The event has three different distances to choose from, a short (50km), a medium (106km), and a long (138km). In my own words, hard, harder, and hardest. During the first four da s, we tested our legs in some of the nearby mountains to assess where we stand in finishing one of the three distances above. Immediately we found out how difficult this was going to be. There is nothing we can do to improve our chances of completing the long option we originally came for. There were a lot of factors that no matter how much you try, training in Bahrain is just not enough. The country cannot mimic the altitude and uphill gradients. However, we did not give up. We decided to fit our ikes with ountain specific gears that allows the bicycle to go slow, but the legs to spin faster, easing off the pain while climbing the mountains towards 2200 meters of elevation, about seven times. Because of the strict cut-off times, none of us was sure before the race what sort of distance we will end up competing. The organisers allow you to choose while you are competing in the race. So many questions and so little answers we had for this challenge. You need to be

SPORTS & BEYOND

as light as possible carrying yourself and pedalling up the mountain. However, you have to take all the necessary gear with you. Rain cover, spare tubes, food, drinks, and perhaps even a phone (We live for that perfect Instagram photo today right?) The race began, Sara was up in the second wave in the female category, and the rest of us in the third wave. We needed to pace ourselves yet meet the cut-off times to be allowed to continue towards the long distance option. With more than 9000 other ‘lucky’ participants, we climbed the first mountain. It was so packed that we had to almost halt in some uphill turns at 14 percent gradient. We look up and down the mountain and can see thousands of participants all over the mountain, something that gives chills to the skin.

I had a lot of information displayed on my Garmin device, but the most important one is time. We started at 6:50 am, and I needed to pass through the turn towards the long option before 11:45 am. I had five mountains to climb first. Going up I wanted to take off all my clothes because of the body heat, and coming down I wanted the thickest blanket to cover myself in. The temperature was around 12 in the bottom, and 7 Celsius on top. But coming down the mountain at almost 90km/hr was not something pleasant. Actually, the whole going up and down thing was confusing for the brain to plan, it was all new. I was able to make the cutoff time and reached exactly 11:00 am. I made the turn and felt relieved. Now, the real challenge begins. Yes,

after all this time, the scary mountain of going 10km for an average of 10% gradient was approaching. Here I began. I wanted to shut my mind. I thought of what would I do if I won the lottery, and then find myself on top. Nope, it didn’t work. Every pedal was painful, and my lower back started hurting a lot, while my energy started fading. After about an hour, I reached 6km and needed to stop for a breather. Gradually, I was able to get to the top, stopped an ambulance and asked for some Ibuprofen for my back. The toughest mountain was done and dusted, time was good, and here I knew I was on my way to finish. I reached the finish line after 8 hours and 21 minutes. I was so proud of myself, especially that I was wearing the Bahrain Merida outfit. Hundreds

of myself, especially that I was wearing the Bahrain Merida outfit Hundreds of c clists and spectators shouted time and time again at me with “Bahrain” and “Nibali” which gave e a significant boost throughout the race. Sometimes it is small things that matter, and this time, everything mattered. Sara completed the short distance in a fantastic position, finishing mountains ahead of many locals who actually train in the mountains themselves. She said that “Nothing is more beautiful than climbing the Italian Alps and this trip is definitel one to do ever year! I am very proud to e the first Ara fe ale to participate and represent Bahrain.” Abdulla had a mechanical problem, but he anaged to finish the medium distance. Ibrahim, on the other hand, who never did a full IRONMAN or any other endurance event before, made it through the long distance in 9 hours and 10 minutes!

“I WAS SO PROUD OF MYSELF, ESPECIALLY THAT I WAS WEARING THE BAHRAIN MERIDA OUTFIT. HUNDREDS OF CYCLISTS AND SPECTATORS SHOUTED TIME AND TIME AGAIN AT ME WITH ‘BAHRAIN’ AND ‘NIBALI’ WHICH GAVE ME A SIGNIFICANT BOOST THROUGHOUT THE RACE.” Ebrahim said at the end that “what we did was a great achievement by itself because we weren’t used to the high altitude and trained in a hot and at area a ver proud to e one of the first four Bahrainis to do this Maratona competing against more than 9000 world class cyclists.” I am writing this with mixed emotions, just before boarding the plane back to Bahrain. This place is beautiful and difficult to leave, ut there is no such place as home. Alta Badia, we will be back!

CYCLING

All eyes are on France from the cycling world. Year after year, the toughest cycling event in the world gets better and better as it provides memorable moments which keep ever yone on the edge of their seats wanting more. Team Bahrain Merida’s journey to the top is full of promises, and we are here to witness them! Read on what the spor ts director of Tour de France, Philippe Mauduit, has to say as the battle of the biggest cycling event of the year begins.

Tell us about your journey to becoming a sports director.

you joined? What are the aspects that need improvement?

It started with my grandfather, uncle and father as they were cyclists themselves which have led me to become a cycling enthusiast. Aside from the blood that I have inherited from my heritage, I also got the greatest passion for the sport. When it was time for me to stop racing, I then got a proposal from my last team management to become a sports director. I refused at first as was also teaching full time. The team didn’t give up and came back just after a few weeks to convince me to try for a few months. Finally, I cracked and accepted the proposal. Twenty years later, I still have the same love for the job.

We have to remember that Team Bahrain Merida is still new in world class cycling. However, we are the first team in cycling history who have made a podium in a rand Tour for its first ear of existence(Giro d’Italia). It is something even the biggest team in cycling history has never achieved before, and I am very proud of that. I have not instituted any changes as it’s not my way of handling things. I’m part of one of the most prestigious teams in the world and our progress in the hierarchy are only due to teamwork. Every single one of the members of the team brings something to the table with vast experiences and ideas. Together, we try to build our future with the same passion for “our” Team. Of course, there is always room for improvements, not only because Team Bahrain Merida

is new but because that’s the essence of human progress. Shortly, we will have to improve on a global level by adding one or two key riders who will be able to support Vincenzo Nibali directly on race where Vincenzo will take part but also in important races where he will not be. This will give more consistency and regularity on our achieved results. We will also have to optimise our team’s training camps. The results on the roads prove that we have done a good job so far. We also have to keep the focus on the young talents we have in the team. They show progress every month, and these advances are what we have to develop in the best way possible as they are to become the future of the team.

What is your day like as a sports director? Before each race stage, what final moments are like for you? A Sports Director day usually starts at 6 o’clock in the morning. We make sure that all the demands and information we have planned the evening before were well understood. We then have one more look at the ap and profile of the race We check the latest weather forecast and updates to modify the quantity of food and beverage to prepare for the riders.

At around 8 o’clock, the riders go for breakfast. We visit them to get feedbacks on their recovery from the past racing days. This will help to define the roles of each one during the day. One hour before the race, the team riefing egins e plaining to the riders the strategies of the day with the tasks and goals assigned to each rider. When the race starts, we drive the car behind the peloton. We look at the map all day long to give more insights (when will the climbs start, which percentage and

“We are the first team in cycling history who have made a podium in a Grand Tour for its first year of existence.” how long will it be etc. and we support riders with our internal radio communication. When necessary, we adapt according to whatever transpires on the race as we

get more information from the radio tour which riders don’t have. When the race finishes, we all go back to the bus. We then give interviews to the media and prepare the de riefing When we arrive at the hotel, we visit each rider to debrief about the day. We talk to the mechanics to discuss the profile of the following stage. We also brainstorm on the materials and equipment we will use the next day. We then prepare the plan, design the map, look at all road details and prepare the riefing which takes 3 hours more or less. In the evening, during the staff dinner, we have a full discourse about what is expected of the team the following day.

Tour de France is considered the pinnacle of a racer’s cycling career. What is the strategy of the team on this year’s Tour? We have to be honest and fair, it will e difficult to start Tour de France as excellent as we did in the Giro d’Italia. We couldn’t start with the same riders as they need to recover from a harsh and long race in Italy. We will initiate the Tour de France with a mixed team of young talents who have to develop together with the experienced riders who will guide them along the road. Because of that, we will have to adapt to the goals and strategies each day depending on how the riders did the day before. Sonny Colbrelli will make his debut on the Tour de France and will fight against all the est sprinters in the world for the

first ti e All the world stars of the Sprint will be there, and of course, we will support him with Borut Bozic, Grega Bole, Ramunas Narvadauskas and Yukiya Arashiro to achieve the best possible result. On the other side, we will have Jon Izaguirre who has shown excellent abilities in mountain races supported with Janez Brajkovich, Javier Moreno, Tsgabu Grmay in the hills.

Ion Izagirre recently had a breathing problem during the Tour de Suisse. What are the measures being taken to prevent this circumstance from happening again? Allergic reactions for some riders are a real and dramatic problem. We don’t have many possibilities to avoid this as most of the medications to treat them are not allowed during the race. In this case, the riders have to keep fighting hard Nonetheless, we help them with particular attention on a diet and recovery treatment, but this is not as effective as the edicine t s difficult to prevent them as it will also depend on the nature around us. In the Tour de France, we change regions almost every day, and as this happens, the agriculture and plants change as well.We will be anticipating those bad days by having a defending strategy which will help on saving energy for the good days.

If Izagirre is not ready or can’t perform on expected level, what is Plan B for the Tour? Who will take the role of the leader, and how will goals change? We will then have to focus on a more aggressive team strategy where we will have to take part on breakaways, and chase stage wins with all

“It’s on hard days we make the future brighter. Please keep on supporting us as you always have done.” riders. All stages will not be favourable for us so we will have to play smart and focus on the circumstances that count.

There are potential 9 sprinter’s finishes. Will you send Sonny Colbrelli to try to win each of those, or will you select few that fit him better, and save his legs for the other ones? Sonny is still in learning process He will have to fight for the victory each day to improve and learn for future. A bunch sprint is a gambling game. You can start your sprint 1/10 of second too early or too late, and you are first or th on the line This will not only depend on you

but also on all moves in the bunch in last 3 kilometres of the race. He has to learn how to read those steps with the help from Borut and Grega fighting against the est sprinter teams in the world.

What should the fans expect from Team Bahrain Merida on the Tour de France? What is your message especially to the fans from the Kingdom of Bahrain? First of all, we are extremely proud to represent the Kingdom of Bahrain, and we feel the support from the fans. We have discovered about the culture and the sport in the kingdom during our training camp as we have seen people riding

with us last January. We know the interest for the sport is growing fast and that people practice more and more as they discover how riding improve health and wellbeing, as well as the support to Team Bahrein Merida, is growing in parallel. Tour de France is by far the most demanding and the hardest race in the world. It will e our first e perience there, we know we will suffer a lot, but also know that we will have good times. The only thing I am certain of is that whatever it is, good or bad days, our team spirit is indestructible because we are highly motivated. It’s on hard days we make the future brighter. Please keep on supporting us as you always have done, even on bad days. We will make you proud as we are proud of your support.

DIPPING YOUR CAR While it’s a cheaper and an effective way to upgrade your precious car, let’s examine the pros and cons before you decide to dip it, shall we?

Pros: Much cheaper than paint

P

plasti Dip is a relatively new product that can be used to change the colour of your car temporarily. It is a liquid form of the material used to vinylwrap vehicles. It dries into a e i le aterial that protects the paint underneath. If done correctly, it is not only an e cellent tool for decorating the outside of your car, but also helps aintain the finish on the body and trim. Plasti Dip can withstand freezing te peratures and e tensive direct sunlight without warping or melting, so it is highly durable. It is also easy to remove and peels off when needed. It is an awesome way to upgrade the look of your car. Here are some of the enefits and few on how to get the best results out of a Plastidip.

PLASTI-DIP ON CARS You can use Plasti-Dip virutall an where e cept areas that get very hot such as the engine bay or around the

brakes and wheels.

1

BLACK-OUT GRILLES

This is one great way to transform the look of your car

2

BLACK-OUT EMBLEMS

Use Plasti-Dip for a more stealth look.

3

BLACK-OUT WINDOW OR CHROME TRIM

You can use this to easily cover your window trim.

4

WHEELS

You can use this if you’re considering having your wheels powder coated black

5

THE ENTIRE CAR

This is a great (and cheaper) option to repainting. It can be done regardless of whether your paint is brand new, or in a rough shape.

Less prep work required. Needs to be smooth and clean but not to the extreme you need with paint. If you don't like the colour, you can always peel it off. Much easier to clean up mistakes or overspray Easy to fix if it gets scratched

Cons: Limited selection of colours Not quite as durable as professional paint job with a clear coat Temporary, by design and definition

We know it’s hard to believe, but this is served healthily! This is one of the smartest choices at Organitta if you are craving for a traditional dish. Tasty marinated chicken with biryani rice and fresh vegetable served with special biryani sauce on top which was made healthy so you don’t have to worry about those extra calories and fat.

In the fast-food world, it’s hard to find a eal under calories that don’t contain the leanest of proteins, chicken. That’s why we’re ecstatic about this famous Chinese dish. It is served as “oilfree” chicken fried rice, no additional oil added. Yum!

This is not a meal to disrespect. Whip up this mouthwatering creation and savour the slices of wellmarinated beef cooked with capsicum topped with zero trans fat cheese and served with side dish of your choice.

Waf es ade health Game! Made up of multiple types of protein, cooked with non-sticking spray and served with strawberry, banana and topped with sugar-free maple syrup, this is a must-try.

The high-end salon is well-maintained, and as you step into the building, the interior decor gives you a sense of relaxation in a classy atmosphere. Dessange uses an organic Green Bar soap to scrub your body. The therapist applied the soap all over our body. For a few minutes, we relaxed in a steamy atmosphere to open up our pores and prepare our body for the removal of dead skin cells. Unlike the traditional Moroccan bath, the therapist scrubbed our body lightly, gently and thoroughly; to ensure that the skin receives complete exfoliation. They then cover our body with a plastic wrap for 10 minutes that helps detoxify and

revitalise the skin. After rinsing, we were treated with a relaxing massage for 30 minutes using essential oils. The therapist was very polite and asked us how much pressure she can apply for the massage. She then worked her way on removing the lumps and relieving muscle tensions from our body. A warm shower after the treatment made us feel even more invigorated and refreshed. What sets Dessange’s treatment apart is that it uses unique ingredients during the immersing process. It takes up to 35 to 40 minutes to feel totally reborn. The prices are very reasonable for a luxurious treat. It is a place where your money is worth spending. Highly recommended to women out there who wants to be pampered.

EXPERT TIPS

MYTHS BUSTED 1

THE APPLICATION IS PAINFUL

Veneers are applied after the patient is given a local anesthetic to eliminate pain and discomfort.

THE ENTIRE TOOTH MUST BE FILED DOWN BEFORE VENEERS CAN BE PLACED

2

TOOTH BE TOLD: LUMINEERS VS VENEERS Beautiful smiles can make a significant impact on your life. There is no doubt that people with bright and healthy teeth demonstrate high self-esteem and radiate confidence. If you’ve ever envied these per fect smiles, you may have found the myriad of cosmetic dentistr y options a bit bewildering. No doubt you’ve heard about Lumineers vs. Veneers.

P

orcelain veneers are often confused with lumineers because the two are similar in many ways. Both veneers and lumineers are manufactured of thin porcelain and are used for similar purposes. They both are used in cosmetic dentistry to correct teeth imperfections. However, there are also differences between the two and the most important being the procedure and the changes made to the original tooth; lumineers do not alter the structure of the tooth and therefore might be a better long term solution

66

POWERUP | JULY 2017

Dental veneers are custommade shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their colour, shape, size, or length. The placement of porcelain veneers is typically a painfree procedure. Dentists usually numb the tooth and the surrounding area before removing the dental enamel. In many cases, this amount of coating is so small that patients do not even require anaesthesia.

Lumineers have the same function as the porcelain veneers and provide the same enefits to the patient The placement doesn’t involve the peeling of the enamel of the tooth and therefore might be a better long term solution than veneers. When placing lumineers, the structure of the tooth remains unchanged. Lumineers are much thinner than veneers; they are as thick as a contact lens, but this does not make them less durable. Given that lumineers are placed without the tooth being altered, they do add to the overall structure of the

While some reshaping is usually needed before placing veneers, most of it is minimal. Dentists and team will always try and conserve as much tooth structure as possible.

3

VENEERS CAN GET PUT ON IN ONE VISIT

Getting veneers is a multi-step process to make sure you get the exact smile of your dreams. After a smile analysis and working with one of our local dental labs, you’ll have the opportunity to try on temporary veneers to make sure the look and feel is perfect.

VENEERS ARE UNNATURALLY WHITE AND NOTICEABLE

Modern veneers can be beautifully customized to match the thickness, shape, and natural color of your existing teeth.

tooth. However, the additional enefits are well worth it the tooth is still protected by its natural enamel, even if the lumineers need to be taken off.
