Narrative ----- Cucullu, Erin The Kindness of a Stranger; Harley Slaback Narrative; The Kindness of a Stranger; Erin Cucullu. College paper, 2001; 10 pages, double spaced; relates the experiences of Harley Slaback who fought in WW II and was captured by the Germans at the Battle of the Ardennes, or the Battle of the Bulge. While on patrol on December 16, they found themselves behind enemy lines and were captured, and 24 hours later marched to Bad Orb where they were held, interrogated, and lived in Stalag 9B with about 100 other men. Once finally released, the starving men were sent home by ship and reunited with family. Harley was starving, and took a while to recover at the Woods VA Hospital in Milwaukee. He then worked for a Wisconsin Telephone company for 18-19 years, before he was transferred to Florida, which is where he retired.

Pamphlet ----- Leicht, Don M. Humorous Events of a Century Ago in the Dells Area "This narrative of the early settlement of Columbia, Sauk, and Juneau counties relates mainly to humorous events that took place a century ago. It was at a time when roads in this section were only wagon tracks following a line of "blazed" trees. Creeks were forded and nearly all the people used ox teams; an era when differences of opinion were settle in street fight and barroom brawls, and acceptance of the law was not too widespread." "The narratives were taken from newspaper files of the State historical Society. Credit is give to Robert F. Fries for extracts from his book "The Story of Lumbering in Wisconsin."

Fonds/Collection ----- Ironton United Methodist Church Ironton United Methodist Church Documents pamphlets, photographs, photo album, Administrative Records, Bi-Laws, histories, newspaper clippings, print block plate, related to the Ironton United Methodist Church, Ironton, Wisconsin Western Wisconsin Conference was established in 1857 as a Circuit of churches in Ironton, Cazenovia, Sandusky, Town of Washington, Loganville, LaValle, Hills Prairie, Westfield and Field Prairie. In 1872 the Ironton congregation bought two lots from John Tour and his, heirs of Jonas Towe who had set aside the lots many years before for a church and parsonage. The Church was built in 1873 as the Methodist Episcopal church and used by Congregationalists. The bell was put in the belfry in March 5, 1875. It was wrung by Johnnie Hearn, a Seventh Day Adventist, the son of a professional bell ringer from a furnace was England. In 1876, John Frederick Smith, owner of the Iron works died and willed the church $500.oo for putting in a basement, furnace, and two coats of paint. In 1885 the summer kitchen of the parsonage caught on fire, destroying the kitchen and prompting the community to think about a community fire ladder and a fire chief. Graded Sunday Schools were organized in 1915, and in 1918 a tornado hit Ironton, leaving the church practically in ruins. The bell flew the full length of the church, landing in the Chancel and the roof was blown off. The church was rebuilt in 1919; the sides and east were what remained of the old building, the entrance and belfry were placed on the eft corner, while the pulpit was built diagonally across from the door, placing the seats in a semicircle.
