Athletic Nation founder Dennis Mulgannon and regional franchiser Jeff Wettschurack welcome former Charger fullback Lorenzo Neal to Fountain Hills. (This article originally appeared in the Fountain Hills Times, Arizona)
Almost one year after opening in Fountain Hills, local gym Athletic Nation recently hosted a big name in the NFL. Lorenzo Neal, 16year NFL veteran and former San Diego Charger fullback, dropped by to pay regional franchiser Jeff Wettschurack and associates a little visit. Wettschurack, who operates the Fountain Hills Athletic Nation facility, said he feels it was the facility’s approach to physical fitness that attracted Neal’s attention. With the Fountain Hills branch being the only Athletic Nation in Arizona, this men-only franchise started out of San Jose, Calif., when founder Dennis Mulgannon decided to take a hassle-free, no frills approach to personal fitness. Utilizing personal trainers and two one-hour workouts per week, the Athletic Nation regime calls for free weights and good old-fashioned workouts as opposed to overly complicated
equipment and routines. “I think Neal’s career is starting to wind down and he is looking for a business he believes in to get involved with,” Wettschurack said. “He really likes the concept of our gym and I think he wants to become a part of that. He believes in our methods and toned-down approach.” In town to check out one of the newer facilities, Neal spent the day in Fountain Hills and mingled with local patrons. According to franchise salesman Elza Gennicks, Athletic Nation and partner Powerhouse Franchising made the move to Arizona for its huge athletic population. With 14 facilities across the country, Gennicks said Athletic Nation is just beginning to branch out.
