Shooter damages PRECorp substation, causes Sunday power outage Hundreds of Crook and Campbell county residents without power for several hours SUNDANCE, Wyo. – More than 270 Powder River Energy Corporation (PRECorp) members in Crook and Campbell counties lost electricity at 8 a.m. Sunday due to an act of vandalism which damaged one of the electric cooperative’s substations. Crook County authorities are investigating the vandalism incident that occurred in northwestern Crook County. According to the Crook County Sheriff’s Office, someone fired shots at the PRECorp substation north of Moorcroft causing damage to the main transformer there. PRECorp crews responded immediately to the outage and restored power to some of the customers at 11 a.m. and power was completely restored to all of the cooperative’s customers at approximately 3 p.m. Sunday. Several bullets, believed to be fired from a rifle, caused direct damage to the transformer. Although power has been restored on an interim basis, long-term repairs are necessary. Other shots also struck the substation, but did not cause immediate damage. The total cost of the incident has not been determined, but it may exceed $200,000 according to PRECorp officials. Official costs will not be known until a complete damage assessment can be made. -

“Vandalism of this nature is extremely dangerous to our membership,” said PRECorp Vice-President of System Operations Dave Sutter. “Our crews work very hard in all conditions to provide high-quality power, and man-caused outages such as this put them at risk, and create unnecessary hardships for our members.” Anyone with information that would help Crook County law enforcement solve this case should contact the Crook County Sheriff’s Office at 307-283-1225. Powder River Energy Corporation is a member-owned, nonprofit electric utility serving the five counties of northeast Wyoming including Campbell, Sheridan, Johnson, Crook and Weston.
