Boehringer Ingelheim India’s holistic services help our customers design effective disease control programs, training and development of their teams on efficient vaccination protocols and improving the production

performance of their poultry flocks through our innovative products and services. Could you please share your views on Poultry Industry for our magazine readers?

Poultry is one of the fastest growing segments of the agricultural sector in India and is valued at $17 bn. India is currently the third largest egg producer at 105 bn eggs per annum and fifth largest poultry meat producer at 4.5 million metric tons per annum. Per capita consumption of chicken and eggs is still low in India compared to developed countries and many other developing markets. Though the live bird market still constitutes over 90% of total broiler business, the share of dressed and processed chicken is increasing by double digits every year and online meat sales have grown by 2-3 times in last two years. This presents a great opportunity for poultry producers to introduce new marketing and distribution channels to be able to meet the increasing demand of good quality affordable source of protein such as chicken and eggs. Disease challenges, lack of cold storage infrastructure and processing facilities, increasing feed prices and volatility in broiler prices remain a key concern for the poultry producers.

Animal Nutrition

DR. BERNHARD ECKEL, VICE PRESIDENT OF DR. ECKEL ANIMAL NUTRITION

“Chicken protein plays a crucial role in world nutrition. it is safe and healthy and the only meat accepted by all creeds and denominations. And chickens have an outstanding feed conversion rate. That makes chicken a champion of efficiency.."

What are your best-known solutions/products/services? As a pioneer in the industry, we have always been striving for the best solution. Being a pioneer implies going on unexplored paths. It can be challenging, but is very rewarding especially when you believe in what you are doing. At the beginning of our journey, more than 25 years ago, there was a lot of resistance to get rid of AGPs, as they were thought to be indispensable for animal performance. We believed in a livestock production without antibiotic growth promoters, and we proved that we were right. Nowadays, many countries have already banned or are planning to ban the use of antibiotics as growth promoters and as prophylaxis, due to issues related with drug resistance and ultimately safety for humans. Today’s consumers want to know what is in the food they eat. They make informed decisions for themselves and their families. The pressure comes from the bottom up and not vice versa. So the challenge for modern livestock production is to meet the demands of consumers, society and politics for quality, sustainability and animal welfare, and still to be profitable with their business. We were one of the first companies to offer products specifically designed for the 18 | PoultryReporter.com

improvement of animal welfare. This is what we provide and what we are best known for: Solutions that combine animal well-being with sustainability and profitability. Which industry sectors are your customers in, and which ones are growing fastest? Our products serve a wide range of species, from poultry to ruminants to swine to fish and crustaceans. Around the globe, the demand for animal protein is still growing, which is best visible in the growth rates of the poultry and aquaculture industries. What are your most recent product innovations? Only last month, we released our latest solution Anta®Catch, an innovative and highly effective new product. Intensive feeding with high protein and starch content often results in high endotoxin levels, which in turn impair animal welfare, health and performance. Anta®Catch has been designed from scratch to be a specific and especially effective solution for this problem. During the product development process, we aimed at finding raw materials with a high ability to adsorb endotoxins and to support the animals against the deleterious effects of endotoxin challenges.

Animal Nutrition

What are the major trends and developments affecting your category and your customers, and how are you responding? One recent development that is a challenge for all of us is certainly the Coronavirus pandemic. Apart from the threat for national and individual health, we have already seen production shut-downs, higher prices, shortages in raw materials and disrupted supply chains all over the globe. vivo and in vitro, against many microorganisms. Recently, the ability of Alquermold Natural to reduce the concentration of Campylobacter in laying hens has been evaluated in comparison with certain organic acids and formaldehyde, compounds commonly used in poultry industry for the same purpose. And we have been cut off from each other: For almost a year now, we have only been able to meet our customers digitally. Yet while we sorely miss them and will welcome the day when we finally will be able to visit them again, we are glad for the opportunities that technology gives us. So we can do our best to maintain production and deliveries as reliably as usual. And we keep in contact via video calls, online meetings and webinars to make sure that we care for our friends and partners as best as possible. The other development has been there before coronavirus and still will be after the pandemic has finally been fought off. It is the need to secure the future of our industry. A lot has been talked, written and said about how to fortify businesses against the effects of the crisis. But what will really work out in the end is the solution that has been known and been right before, though not generally acknowledged yet, let alone accepted: Sustainability. With almost 10 billion people to feed by 2050, we know that food production has to both increase and

19 | PoultryReporter.com

change. For this, we are faced with the enormous challenge of ensuring that we will have enough food for the world’s population, and that the food is healthy, nutritious and produced in a manner that is sustainable for humans, animals and the environment. In the case of animal production, this means effective resource management, efficient feed production, no waste in terms of energy and raw materials, and also healthy animals. And at the end of the day, it has to profitable, of course. What’s your strategy for succeeding in the current climate? We look ahead—and go ahead—as we have always done. With our products, we can help improve performance by increasing animal growth, consequently producing more protein to combat hunger. We can add to a positive impact on food safety and security by reducing the use of medication. And we can support the reduction of our ecological footprint by improving efficiency. Feed additives help avoid feed and food losses. Though they can always only be one tool among many, feed additives play a vital part in securing the health and stability of our societies, nations and industries. There will always be new challenges and new crises. The best we can—and must—do is to strengthen people and businesses against their impacts. Agriculture is the key industry to finding solutions to secure the future for our world. And feed additives with their contribution to safe feed, sustainable production and healthy food are a substantial part of this solution. with laying hens, recently wanted to adapt its production so that antibiotics would no longer be used in the laying phase. At the same time, less dirty eggs should be produced. Such a conversion is a challenge that many producers shy away from. At the same time, however, it is very interesting from an economic as well as from a sustainability point of view. Not only do you save on antibiotics, but you can also market the eggs better. As we have stated before, one of our aims right from the start was to make animal production as antibiotic-free as possible. So we have over 25 years of experience in this field. With our phytogenic additive Anta®Phyt, we were able to help the customer achieve his goal and make the switch successfully. Anta®Phyt is the phytogenic way to achieve better digestibility, gut health and a higher dry matter content in the litter. This lead to less dirty eggs and less antibiotics. What’s the latest news from your company? As mentioned above, we have just successfully concluded our latest major development by launching our new product Anta®Catch. Developing Anta®Catch took us more than two years and we were supported by several government funds, both local and from the European Union. These grants underline the fact that the public has a significant and justified interest in the development of an effective and reliable solution against endotoxins. Feeding solutions that enable farmers and producers worldwide to raise healthier, more resilient animals, cut down

medication, antibiotics and environmental pollution, and ultimately profit from it, are the right way into the future of animal production. Can you tell us about any areas where you’re currently making technical advances? Yes, we can reveal that there will be a technological innovation coming very soon: For one of our leading phytogenic products, we are working on a watersoluble solution which will be of particular value for poultry breeders and farmers. We shall to be able to tell you more in a few weeks’ time! Could you please share your views on Poultry Industry for our magazine readers? As we have seen over the last years and even decades, the poultry industry is a key factor for reliable food supply. Almost half the worldwide feed production is for poultry. Chicken is the fastest growing production species in agriculture worldwide. Chicken protein plays a crucial role in world nutrition: it is safe and healthy and the only meat accepted by all creeds and denominations. And chickens have an outstanding feed conversion rate, converting 1.8 kg of feed into 1 kg of meat. That makes chicken a champion of efficiency. We are happy and proud to serve this great and important industry with our product solutions, e.g., our phytogenic feed additives which can decrease the feed conversion rate by up to 4%.

Never underestimate the importance of a healthy gut! What are the functions of the gut? Digesting feed and absorbing nutrients

"A healthy and well-balanced microbiota is key for a healthy animal as the gut microbiota contributes to the intestinal integrity, the digestion of nutrients and supports the immune system..."

21 | PoultryReporter.com

Digestion of feed can be divided in two distinctive processes: (1) the mechanical digestion by chewing, grinding, churning and mixing in upper gastrointestinal tract (mouth/crop and stomach)

and (2) chemical digestion using enzymes and bile acids to break down feed material into its constituent components in the small intestine. Nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine which has a large inner surface area due to folds of the epithelial layer (villi) and presence of microvilli on the enterocytes within the epithelial layer.

Providing protection against pathogens and toxins Intestinal integrity- Intestinal integrity is the ability of the GIT to act as a physical barrier, preventing the translocation of pathogens and potentially harmful molecules such as mycotoxins and endotoxins. Intestinal integrity is considered to be mainly maintained through (A) the mucus layer, covering the epithelial cells, and (B) tight junction proteins, connecting the epithelial cells. Impairment of the intestinal integrity may lead to microbial translocation (pathogens and toxins such as endotoxins), possibly causing inflammation.

Business Aplications

Gut associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) The GIT is considered to be the largest organ of the immune system as more than 70% of the cells of the immune system are located there. The GALT comprises of set of cells such as mesenchymal cells, dendritic cells, lymphocytes and macrophages located beneath the mucus layer and the single layer of epithelial cells. The main function of the GALT is to recognize and respond to pathogenic stimuli, without mounting an inflammatory response when it processes antigens from food or the commensal microbiota. Harbouring a balanced microbial population The gut microbiota is a vast group of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses and fungi residing predominantly in the hindgut, and that lives in symbiosis with the host. A healthy and well-balanced microbiota is key for a healthy animal as the gut microbiota contributes to the intestinal integrity, the digestion of nutrients and supports the immune system. Various stress factors can affect the gut microbiota and cause an imbalance or dysbiosis in the

bacterial population by decreasing the beneficial bacterial population and increasing the unfavourable bacterial population. What is optimal gut health? Optimal gut health depends on the intestinal integrity, the mucosal immune system and the microbial population, and their interactions. Under ideal conditions, these components are in balance and most dietary nutrients are directed towards growth and production. However, modern production systems expose animals to various stress factors throughout their life cycle. These stress factors, such as pathogens, toxins, heat stress, vaccinations, feed quality and feed transitions, can lead to an imbalance between the intestinal integrity, the microbiota and the immune system. As a result, digestion and absorption of nutrients become ineffective and more nutrients are used by the immune system, at the expense of the zootechnical performance. Promoting gut health with feed additives The increasing genetic potential of our livestock and intensive production systems together with the clear and inevitable need to move away from anti-

microbial growth promoters requires alternative strategies to support and maintain an optimal gut health for improved animal welfare and performance. Nowadays, feed additives have a crucial role to play in strengthening intestinal health and reducing antibiotic use by: Improving feed digestion (feed enzymes) Reducing the presence of toxins, such as mycotoxins and endotoxins (binders) Supporting gut integrity (Immunomodulators, Phytogenic products, Acidifiers) Supporting gut development (Immunomodulators) Stimulating a beneficial microbiota (Immunomodulators, Acidifiers) Author-Kurt Van de Mierop ,M.Sc. – Nutrex nv ,Belgium

ggs are an important and fundamental foodstuff for developing countries. The greater the distance between producer and consumer, the more complex is the marketing organization required to ensure that eggs reach consumers in the form, place and time desired.

So Producers may decide to market their produce directly to consumers – direct marketing – or may choose from a variety of marketing organizations that make up a marketing channel. So here are major methods of marketing eggs: 1.DIRECT MARKETING: Egg producers who are situated a short distance from consumers may be able to practise direct marketing such as:

Sales from the farm, Door-todoor sales/street hawking, Sales to any local retail shops. 2. MARKETING INTERMEDIARIES: Wholesale distributor: Wholesalers usually have a good knowledge of the market, access to the best information on trends and prospects and working capital to carry business risks as required.

Wholesalers usually obtain eggs from central wholesale markets, assembly merchants, collectors and local country markets; however, in some instances they go directly to the producers. Eggs may be purchased directly or accepted for sale on a commission basis. Many wholesalers have their own

In 2020, the most prevalent mycotoxins globally are the Fusarium mycotoxins DON (65%) and FUM (64%), followed by ZEN (48%). North America

Risk in North America is extreme. DON is one of the main concerns in all species in North America. It was present in 72% of corn samples and in 89% of cereal samples. Average of positives for DON in corn (maize) was quite high with 808 ppb and even higher in cereals (1,721 ppb). Corn was also affected by FUM and ZEN with averages of 2,405 ppb and 323 ppb, respectively. DDGS (Dried distillers’ grains with solubles), a corn by-product, shows high levels of Fusarium mycotoxins. Co contamination was high, and 92% of the tested samples contained more than one mycotoxin. Everything you need to know about upcoming mycotoxin. Central America

Central America is at extreme risk. Nearly all (97%) corn samples tested positive for FUM at an average of 1,820 ppb and a maximum of 24,233 ppb. The byproduct corn gluten was highly affected by FUM, ZEN and DON with 100%, 75% and 69% prevalence, respectively. Average contamination is extreme for ZEN with 1,468 ppb. South America

Risk in this region is severe. Corn in South America is highly contaminated with FUM at 83% and an average of positives of 2,280 ppb. In wheat, DON is the mainthreat. It was found in 83% of the samples with an average of 1,584 ppb. Soybeans are affected by mycotoxin contamination. Most abundant was ZEN in 73% of soybean samples, followed by T-2

microbiome in humans and animals has increased tremendously. In poultry, we focus on achieving a healthy gut since a well-functioning gut is the key engine for growth, health and welfare of the birds. Agility of the microbiome is closely linked to gut health. Maintaining the microbiome agile by making sure the digestive tract is populated with a diverse and functional microbiota is crucial for the chicken to withstand the challenges as a production animal. Nowadays we are looking at more holistic approaches for obtaining a healthy gut microbiota that provides protection against pathogens and shapes the digestive physiology and the immune system in beneficial ways.
