For the last 15 years, we have hosted the World Indoor Bowls Championships in our six-rink ‘International Arena’, so you’ll have the opportunity to bowl under the bright lights of this famous venue. We also have six rinks in our ‘Bowlers Bar’, where you can relax and have a drink whilst seeing how your friends are getting on with their game. In total, you can bowl at Potters on any one of 14 indoor or 7 outdoor rinks.

Outstanding facilities Our Bowls Breaks started many years ago with our first two indoor rinks, which can be found upstairs. Obviously with the popularity of bowls at Potters Resort increasing, we have added additional rink space and this continued investment in the game and our facilities is why an extremely high percentage of our bowling guests and clubs choose to return year after year.

These state of the art wireless scoring systems have been added on each rink, which link to a 42” screen where your scores will be displayed. Furthermore, we have also installed three master scoreboards which allow you to relax in the Bowlers Bar, whilst keeping up to date with your friends’ real time progress in the International Arena.

In addition, over recent years, we have made a considerable investment once more, bringing our facilities in line with, and beyond, the best in the land including quality new flooring and modern scoring facilities.

Handrails have also been installed on the rinks to help you and your friends on and off the rinks should you require assistance.

Whilst our outstanding facilities help to create an amazing bowls break, there is one thing however, that ensures like-minded bowlers enjoy their breaks with us more than anywhere else; the warm and friendly atmosphere. Whilst we welcome a number of clubs, we equally welcome many individuals all of whom share stories and memories of their past and present holidays. Many friends have been made over years, both on the rinks and whilst meeting up over an evening drink in one of our bars. We believe this is the factor that truly stands us apart...

To discuss your specific requirements or to book your next Bowls Break, please contact our friendly team on 0844 346 0292, or for club visits of 20 guests or more please call 0845 437 9891. See pages 6 & 7 for further information.

Indoor Bowls With our unequalled facilities and unrivalled experience, Potters Resort provides the most comprehensive Bowling Breaks in the UK.

During our Indoor Bowling Breaks, each player is guaranteed 4 games which are normally 12 ends. In addition to these league games, the top 16 teams (sometimes the top 8) will progress to the knockout stages of the Tournament. However, if you do not qualify for the knockout stages there are still plenty of opportunities to continue bowling, making use of the best facilities in the land. Prizes are presented after the Final, usually on Friday morning to The Finalist, Semi and Quarter Finalist Teams. Each team will receive a Potters Resort Prize Voucher which can be used off the balance of a future holiday. The value of the voucher is comparative to each stage of the Tournament. Prize values vary subject to numbers, but can reach a total value of up to £2400.

Every year, we host midweek bowling breaks from September to mid-May (excluding school holidays). Each midweek break can be enjoyed by over 500 bowlers and are the perfect way to play with old friends, and to make some new ones in the warm and friendly environment of the UK’s first Five Star Holiday Village.

No dress code is required for our Bowls Breaks, with your comfort being the main priority. Many of our bowlers prefer to play in traditional whites/greys or indeed their club colours, with no doubt a few ‘lucky’ outfits among them!

Potters Indoor Bowls Tournaments do not carry any entry charge, with all the organising done for you. Whether you make a reservation as an individual or as a party, all you have to do is book your break and come along, everything else is organised for you.

Bowls breaks at a glance... This schedule highlights the breaks on which our free to enter bowls tournaments are available. All breaks are Monday to Friday and feature entertainment from our very own Potters Theatre Company unless otherwise stated. If you’re interested in arriving early and staying on the Sunday night beforehand, please do not hesitate to ask our friendly Reservations Team at the time of your enquiry.

Associations and... C o mm i t t e d t o t h e c a u s e

to supporting bowls throughout the Country and Potters iswecommitted take great pride in our links with the UK’s main associations:

Bowls England

English Bowling Federation (EBF)

Potters helps to provide valuable funds for these organisations, with breaks here at the Resort dedicated to supporting both the relevant association and the individual clubs involved. Funds are then split between the two, raising the profile of both parties.

English Indoor Bowling Association (EIBA)

English Short Mat Bowling Association (ESMBA)

English Carpet Bowls Association (ECBA)

In addition to working at club level and through the bowling associations, we are also proud to work with the World Bowls Tour in contributing millions over the years to the sport of bowls which assists in the game’s profile, television coverage and marketing. For more on our association with the World Bowls Tour, see pages 12 – 15

Bowls Club Tours Although our own bowls tournaments are supported and enjoyed by hundreds of clubs every year, these are generally offered during the regular indoor bowls season only.

Despite this, many clubs will still come to enjoy a Leisure Break at Potters during the outdoor season. This allows them to enjoy a social week with their members and friends, making use of our five star leisure facilities and fantastic entertainment.

However, in addition to this and to make their stay a true bowls tour for the club, we can arrange matches against a number of local clubs whilst using Potters as a base for their accommodation, meals and entertainment. Matches can either be played at the clubs or of course at Potters making use of the fantastic indoor bowls facilities we have.

Group Bookings Throughout the year, Potters Resort welcomes bowlers from all around the country. On occasions we’ll also see clubs coming from the continent from countries such as Holland and Belgium. Many of these guests will come as part of a group booking organised by someone at their bowls club.

Our coach party of bowlers from North Nottinghamshire has enjoyed several successful weekend visits to Potters.

By coming as part of a larger group, guests can benefit from our fantastic group incentives structure which includes discounts for Bungalow accommodation, free places, reduced supplements for upgraded rooms and much more. On some breaks throughout the year such as the association breaks opposite, not only can the individual guests make a saving, but the club itself can also benefit.

Whilst we make use of the International Arena and other facilities in the morning, each afternoon we arrange for a local bowling club to join us for a friendly competition match after which we entertain our visitors with tea and coffee in the Gallery Lounge, courtesy of Potters.

We understand many clubs have a limited number of members and not all of them will travel on holidays or short breaks. We therefore welcome the idea of smaller clubs combining with others in their local area. Many organisers are already doing this, allowing them to enjoy the excellent benefits of bringing a group.

We have chosen to plan our visits as part of a charity fundraising weekend where we organise raffles for each team we play; our

Potters Resort is always keen to promote the sport of bowls, which often extends to schools in a club’s local area. We have hosted a number of junior competitions in the past and are always open to new events at a time most suitable for your club and its younger members.

If you are looking to organise your club’s bowling break, a possible tour or event or break for juniors, then please call our friendly Group Sales Team on 0845 437 9891.

members provide the prizes beforehand, and through the generosity of the group and our opponents, we have been able to raise much needed funds for two local charities. None of this would be possible without the wholehearted support and co-operation of the Potters Team. Nothing is too much trouble and their help and advice is invaluable, making every visit an enjoyable and memorable one. The only question our group members have is “when are we going to do it again?” C h a rle s Em se n , B a sse tl aw I n d o o r B ow l s C lub

Bowls Formats As the ultimate venue for bowling holidays, we like to ensure that whichever format you enjoy playing bowls in, you can enjoy a break here at Potters Resort. Please remember to check the format of bowls taking place on your chosen date (see page 5), as it is important we book the right one for you.

SHORT M AT B ow l s

Indoor bowls is perhaps the most popular format and played widely across the country, with many clubs participating in leagues and national competitions. Indoor bowls originated from lawn bowls traditionally played during the summer months - when the weather became too cold, the game could continue indoors! Our indoor facilities are second to none with 14 indoor rinks, an easy to use wireless scoring system and screens in our Bowlers Bar which ensure you can be kept up to date with your clubs’ progress wherever they are playing. All tournaments are organised by the experienced Anglia Bowls Team, and rinks are made up of four players. Don’t worry, if you haven’t got a team of four our helpful organisers will create one for you and if necessary will draft in local players to ensure your entry. Our tournaments guarantee 4 games, before moving on to the knockout stages. If you’re on the winning team on any one of our midweek breaks, you will also receive an invite to our annual Champion of Champions Event, where you may be lucky enough to contest the final on the World Bowls Tour’s blue rink during the World Singles Final weekend.

Short mat bowls is played on a temporary mat approximately 45 feet long and 6 feet wide. As well as the block in the middle there is also a ditch at either end, which is shown as a defined area on the mat’s surface. With this format growing in popularity given its flexibility, short mat bowling at Potters Resort is a regular event in our break calendar. It is enjoyed by a high number of guests, some of which even cross the English Channel to participate! Our short mat breaks feature both a pairs and triples competition and is very relaxed, so players of all standards are welcome. As well as the breaks featured in our brochure, we have recently hosted the British Isles Short Mat Championships as well as welcoming a number of private groups who regularly host their own short mat tournaments for their own members*. *If you cannot make the specific Short Mat Bowling Breaks and would like to play friendly short mat games on any of our other bowling breaks, then we will be delighted to arrange this for you. The mats will be available from Tuesday to Thursday inclusive, within our Large Sports Hall. If you wish to arrange this for a party/club please do discuss with us at the time of making your booking with our Group Sales Team.

C ARP ET B ow l s

Carpet bowls was devised as a variation to indoor bowls but on a much smaller scale. Whilst the principal aim remains the same, carpet bowls is played on a temporary surface approximately 30 feet long and 6 feet wide. The woods are also smaller, but still biased to allow players to avoid the 18 inch circular block in the middle of the mat. With mats easily transportable and stored, the game is often played socially in village halls or community centres. However, county associations tend to run their own competitive leagues, with its governing body, the ECBA (English Carpet Bowls Association) organising the national championships. Since we welcomed carpet bowlers to Potters for the first time, this format of the game has gone from strength to strength. Aside from the ECBA County Championships, you can also come along for the annual ECBA Festival in May, which celebrated its 10th year in 2013. Although a little less competitive than the County Championships which is by invite only, experience of carpet bowls is still required to take part.

In addition to our indoor facilities, guests can also enjoy the use of 7 outdoor rinks which have hosted various competitions in various formats in the past, including crown and flat green bowls. Although we do not advertise a specific break in these formats, our experienced bowls organisers will always be happy to discuss any requirements you may have, including hosting your own private events in these formats.

Having invested many millions of pounds in our bowls facilities, the number of clubs coming to us rise and rise, which creates a fantastic atmosphere, and with up to 500 bowlers participating during any given break...

Potters Resort really is the number one choice for your indoor bowling break. th e p ot te r fa m i ly

For those of you that may have just taken up the sport, our November midweek break offers the perfect break for clubs as well as individuals to enjoy, and is hosted and organised by the experienced Mike Welch and Alex Russell from Essex Carpet Bowls.

Your Tournament Organisers

Anglia Bowls

Our Indoor and Short Mat Bowls Breaks are expertly organised by the friendly Anglia Bowls Team, headed up by Mark Hedges.

Depending on rink availability, the team is also happy to assist you with some relaxed coaching for those of you not quite ready to take part in one of our tournaments (although these are very friendly and for guests of all standards). If this is something you would like to do, please feel free to have a chat with the team at the bowls desk on your arrival.

If you’re looking to join us for our November Carpet Bowls Break, you’ll be looked after by Mike Welch & Alex Russell. Mike and Alex have been arranging Carpet Bowls tournaments for a number of years, including breaks at Potters since this format was introduced.

For coaching and Q&A with some of the best bowling talent in the world, why not come along on one of our Bowls International Magazine Celebrity Breaks in April and December? Please see our Break Planner for further information...

Their organisation is greatly appreciated by our guests, with many regular guests returning year after year.

ur indoor bowls tournaments are very friendly and open to players of all standards - ultimately, we want our bowling guests to enjoy their sport within the warm surroundings of Potters, meeting many new friends along the way. Naturally of course there is a competitive edge, more so in the later rounds which feature a knockout format. If you’ve played well enough to reach this stage, there is a final to contest at the end of the Break which you may start to think about a little more seriously...

If you find yourself in the final 2 teams out of a possible 130, that really is some achievement. So we talked about how fantastic it would be to have all of our finalists with us for one break, where the most successful teams come together for the ultimate tournament, at the world’s ultimate bowls venue.

So in 2010, having welcomed a record number of bowlers, we hosted the inaugural Potters Champion of Champions Tournament, for the finalists throughout our 2009/10 season. This Break proved to be immensely popular and we are delighted to say this has now become a regular fixture in our Break schedule.

The format of this tournament is very similar to that of our usual bowling breaks. However, the final tends not to be contested on the morning of your departure. Instead, we invite the winning semi-finalists back once again as guests of the Potter Family to enjoy the World Indoor Bowls Championship’s Singles Final Weekend.

we invite the winning semi-finalists back once again as guests of the Potter Family to enjoy the World Indoor Bowls Championship’s Singles Final Weekend.

It’s during this weekend that the Potters Champion of Champions tournament reaches its conclusion, on the World Bowls Tour’s famous blue rink. That in itself is something very few bowlers will ever have the opportunity to experience. If you go on to win it, even better.

When the World

This is the bowls world’s flagship event and we are proud to say it has been staged at Potters since 1999 – played out on the famous blue rink in our International Arena to a televised audience of millions. Our association with the World Bowls Tour is something we are equally proud of and we work closely throughout the year to ensure the event surpasses previous championships in terms of standards and guest expectations.

From its inception in Scotland in 1979 – which featured the singles only – the event now stages not only the coveted World Indoor Singles Championship, but also other prestigious titles such as the World Indoor Pairs Championship, the Ladies World Match Play Championship and the Mixed Pairs World Match Play Championship.

Hosting these championships has attracted hundreds of thousands of bowls enthusiasts to Potters – not just to watch the world’s best players during the championships, but also to play on our rinks and enjoy Potters’ facilities and hospitality throughout the year. Q&A’s Your Questions Answered

Q How many woods do I need? A For our indoor tournaments, where you’ll be in a team of four, you’ll just need two. However, you may wish to use our facilities for roll-ups in which case you might want to use four woods. For short mat tournaments we would recommend bringing four woods as team sizes do vary. If you are taking part in a carpet bowls competition, Potters will provide all woods. Q Do I pay extra to play bowls? A No – at Potters you can play free of charge, either in our organised indoor tournaments, or for roll ups. (If you are looking to take part in the ECBA Carpet Bowls Festival in May, there is an entry fee payable to the ECBA directly). Q Is there a dress code? A There is no dress code when using the rinks, other than proper bowling shoes. However, most guests taking part in our tournaments will choose to play in whites/greys or their club colours. Q When does the bowling tournament start? A This really depends on the number of bowlers we have taking part. On particularly busy bowls breaks, it may be necessary to start bowling as soon as registration has closed on Monday afternoon. However, our tournament organisers will often get in touch with you if you are required to bowl early. In most circumstances, bowling will start on Monday evening or Tuesday morning.

Q Is there any additional bowling available other than the guaranteed games? A Guests are welcome to have roll-ups during tournaments, however, this is subject to rink availability. Q When do I register for the bowls tournaments? A You just need to inform the Reservations Team when making your booking, as well as confirm your registration at the bowls desk upon your arrival prior to 5pm or earlier if requested by Reception. Q If we don’t have a team of four, can we still take part in the indoor tournament? A Yes – at Potters we create friendly teams so anyone can join in. We also have local bowlers that are happy to come in and make up any teams that are a little short. Q D o Celebrity Breaks still have bowling tournaments for anyone to enter? A Yes – the tournament format is as per usual, with added extras on these breaks such as ‘Question & Answer’ and coaching sessions with the celebrity bowlers. Q Do you have a Mens and Ladies competition? A All Potters bowling tournaments are open to all, so you can have an all mens team, an all ladies team or of course a mix of both. Q Can I hire woods and shoes? A Yes – we do not charge for the hire and any items required can be obtained from our friendly Anglia Bowls Kiosk.

The following is a list of questions frequently asked by our guests. We hope this section answers some of the queries you might have, but of course, please feel free to speak to any one of our Reservations Team when making your booking, or any staff member while you are on Resort.

Q Will I get an opportunity to bowl in all arenas? A Providing we don’t have a private event where one arena is being used, both arenas are available for roll ups. If you are taking part in the tournament, we will make every effort to split your games between the Bowlers Bar and International Arena (and upstairs if being used). We will also try to ensure that you don’t play all of your matches on an end rink, so to be fair to all players competing.

Q I am looking to be taught the game of bowls – is this something you provide? A Whilst we don’t officially offer tuition, our bowls tournament organisers may be able to spend some time with you during your stay and are on hand during most midweek breaks between September and May. You can also enjoy coaching during our sports coaching breaks as well as pick up some tips during our Bowls International Celebrity Breaks.

Q Do Potters cater for wheelchair users who wish to bowl? A Absolutely – we have two wheelchairs specifically designed for bowls which can be pre-booked. If you have your own wheelchair which is designed for use on the Rinks you are welcome to bring it along. We have easy access to downstairs rinks by way of a ramp and hand rails.

Q Is the rink used in the World Championships the same rink I will be bowling on? A Sadly not – whilst they are both blue in colour, the floor in the International Arena is boarded over and along with the seating for the event, the World Bowls Tour bring their own portable rink. This is somewhat faster than the existing carpet we have.

Q If I am looking to run my own carpet or short mat tournament, do I need to bring my own equipment? A Potters have 20 short mats and 20 carpet mats and our Activities Team are happy to arrange these for you subject to rink availability. We would just ask that guests bring their own woods for short mat bowls. Please talk to us at the time of making your reservation as it is imperative that we arrange the rink space for your party at an early stage. Our experienced team will be delighted to help and guide you.

Q How long does the World Championship rink take to set up? A The International Arena is out of action around 10 days prior to the event. The floor is boarded over and the temporary seating is erected. The cameras, lighting, stewards, journalists and of course the players all start to arrive during this time, as well as the portable rink for the next 17 days of competition. When everything is taken back down again, the process is much quicker. The World Singles Final is played on a Sunday afternoon, and by the following Tuesday morning the Arena is ready to be used once again by our guests.

Potters Bowls Tournaments in conjunction with Anglia Bowls The Athena Beach Hotel is widely regarded as being the best bowling hotel in Cyprus with 18 outdoor and 6 indoor bowling rinks, many of which are exclusively reserved for the Potters Bowls Tournaments. Our tournaments are organised by ourselves in conjunction with Anglia Bowls which allows us to include the cost of the rink use during the Festival Week, saving you around £40 per couple and we can team you into ‘fours’ if required. On all Potters Festivals we guarantee all bowlers at least 3 Round Robin games in teams of 4, which can be mixed as it is an open event. In addition we also include Spoon Drives and Roll ups. Please ensure that you register with us as a Bowler when making your booking.

Bowlers of all abilities are welcome, and we can arrange coaching – so even a beginner can enjoy our Bowls Festivals in the sun. Our competitions will use 2 woods and dress code is completely optional. Bowls Tournaments are played over 6 days during the Festival week with prizes for the tournament champions.
