Summer 2012

Traveller’s Choice Winner 2012 for families

I

t’s official, Potters really is the only place to be this summer

Thank you so much to all of you who have been busy reviewing your Potters break on Trip Advisor. Behind the scenes, we have been working hard to revamp the activities that we have available on resort for the summer and have made some exciting new additions which will make this summer’s holiday at Potters even better. Alongside the new Kid’s Clubs, which you can read all about on page 6, we have some great new activities for all the family including mum and dad. So, here’s just a peek at what’s coming to Potters this summer. We’ve transformed the Atlas Theatre into a huge cinema where, during the day, you can watch not just some new releases but some family classics too. And, just for grown-ups also have our new midnight movie offering. With lots of console games available, the Atlas Theatre will double as a Games Arena when we also offer the opportunity to play popular sport, dance and war games with other guests on our seven metre screen.

Sweden, The Abba Tribute were amazing. Just like the real thing. I couldn’t stop smiling or dancing

Make Potters Booking Lounge Your First Port Of Call…

For those looking for something a little more physical summer 2012 will see us launch our Potters Olympics giving you the opportunity to compete against Potters very own Olympian, Fatima ‘Buzby’ White-Break and many others as they Go For Gold and attempt to break a few resort records (and maybe even create some new ones!)

Back in the Atlas Theatre and throughout the summer, Potters Theatre Company will be entertaining us with some fantastic shows including, on midweek breaks, the spectacular “Sweden-The Abba Tribute” This brand new act, which features singers from a hugely popular Abba tribute act will recreate the 70’s with an evening filled with glitz, glamour, unforgettable choreography and classic hits. Sweden debuted recently when they supported Peter Andre and were a huge success. In addition, every Sunday night during the summer holidays the popular West End star Darren Day will be joining the team as a special guest star. There will also be a few familiar faces around the resort but, be warned, everything is not as it seems as we will in fact be holding lookalike competitions throughout the summer. This new event will see us inviting some of the UK’s most successful lookalikes to compete in the Potters 2012 lookalike of the year competition and is sure to provide lots of fun. And with stunt workshops on summer midweek breaks too, there is so much happening on resort this summer that we could go on writing for ever. Instead, we went to Sue Futter our Day Entertainments and Events Programme Manager for the final word and she told us “This is all really exciting and my team cannot wait to unveil all the new activities. Don’t worry, if like me you feel breathless just thinking about everything on offer though as there’s still the chance to relax and unwind in all your favourite on resort haunts” Thanks Sue! Now, what to do first...

Add to this a brand new remote control helicopter and car challenge where you can fly or drive your way through a race track and you’ll really get the competitive juices flowing. We’ll be looking for the quickest contestant of the year and to go head to head with our in-house champion. It is definitely not to be missed and a must for any racing wannabe!

A little over 12 months ago, Potters very own independent cruise experts, No Fly Cruising made their maiden voyage. And, as the only cruise specialists in the local area, the company has quickly outgrown their original office.

Now comprising of five team members and headed by travel guru Angela Waterman, No Fly Cruising, Potters Holidays and Resort Rebooking have moved to The Booking Lounge, located in the entrance foyer beside Reception.

Potters Really does have The Voice

’’

This new, contemporary-styled Booking Lounge has been exclusively designed by Jane Potter. Boasting beautiful, walnut furniture and pistachio green fabrics, the lounge has been transformed into a calming environment ideal for browsing resort brochures and reading the latest Cruise News. The Booking Lounge Sales Manager, Angela says the reason for moving location was simple. “Initially, we wanted to increase our presence in the local community and on the resort. But, we also wanted to create a relaxing atmosphere where we can talk to guests on an individual basis and take time to help them to rebook or find the perfect cruise or Potters Holiday for them.” Daily excursions to local attractions are also on offer within the Booking Lounge on all Midweek and Weekend breaks. Whether you’re looking for a thrill-filled day at Pleasurewood Hills or a tour of Great Yarmouth’s Sea Life Centre, Angela’s experienced team will be on hand to help you choose

lounge something that’s just right for you. But that’s not all. Angela explains, “As well as offering daily excursions to local attractions, you can also book your next Potters Break with us, whether here at Potters or at one of our partnering hotels in Cyprus. You really must come in and have a look around.” Opening hours for the brand new Booking Lounge are: Monday to Saturday 9am -5pm and Sunday 10am – 3pm. Alternatively you can call 0844 8569467 or e-mail holidays@ pottersholidays.com for more information.

U

nless you have been a stowaway on a tropical island somewhere (and in which case, lucky you!) you cannot have failed to have noticed that there is a brand new and very exciting talent show gracing our screens every Saturday night in the form of BBC1’s The Voice.

The premise while fresh and exciting is very simple. It is the search for the next great voice and with this in mind only the very best in UK talent were invited to attend the blind auditions in front of the A-list coaches. Each singer performed for them and the coaches had just the sound of the artist’s voices with which to decide if they would like to offer to coach and develop them. The competition is genuinely tough and has already seen former Potters Theatre Company member and West End Star Kerri Ellis rejected by the coaches who told her that her talents do not lie in pop music but really do suit the West End Stage, where we know that she will continue to have great success. A BBC spokesman told me “the coaches are so committed to finding that amazing voice and really are doing this for all the right reasons. Each one of them is confident that they have that special person to launch in to the pop arena” And, what coaches they have! With international pop superstar Jesse J, Script front man and Irish charmer Danny O’Donoghue, multi platinum selling artist and producer will.i.am and the legendary Tom Jones signed up to coach and develop the acts, this is proving to be a very credible show. And, if this is not exciting enough, we have extra reason to become avid fans as we have our very own Leanne Mitchell and Toni Warne appearing on the show. Regulars at Potters will be familiar with the talents of both of these amazing vocalists as they have graced our Atlas Theatre stage many times and we have high hopes for both of these home grown talents. Having beaten thousands of applicants to get through to the final stages Leanne is being coached

leanne mitchell

toni warne

by Tom Jones, who has co-opted fellow Welsh Wonder Cerys Mathews, former front woman of hit makers Catatonia in to help him offer support to Leanne as she continues to grow as an artist. Toni selected Jesse J as her coach and is under her creative direction. Jesse has brought in Ana Matronic from the Scissor Sisters to help her to bring out the very best in her acts and I am told that both ladies are having the time of their lives and working hard. They are hoping that they can count on your votes to take them further in the competition, so please do get behind them. This show is already a big hit in terms of viewing figures and the BBC told me “the show debuted at 10 million viewers and has grown steadily each week, reaching just over 12 million in a matter of shows which is amazing for any new programme” Amazing indeed, just like our girls Leanne and Toni. Come on ladies, everyone who has ever heard you sing in the Atlas Theatre will be rooting for you and we will of course be voting for you. You can watch the Voice on BBC1 on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

The coaches are so committed to finding that amazing voice and really are doing this for all the right reasons.

The Greatest Big Band Show on Earth

from docks to dance Profile on Charismatic Len Goodman Len Goodman has become a cherished fixture on Saturday night television with millions tuning in each week to see him delivering his, often very generous, verdict on the footwork of Strictly Come Dancing’s featured celebrities. Len’s background however couldn’t be further removed from the sparkle and glamour of the world which he now so successfully inhabits. Formally a dock worker, Len came to dancing relatively late in life at the grand old age of 20, far later in fact than many of the dance professionals that he critiques on our screens every week. This was largely because Len, who was born in the heart of London’s East End, actually dreamed of making his fortunes on the football pitch. It was this goal which inadvertently led him to a career in dance when he used the medium to try and aid his recovery from an injury which he sustained while playing football. Once the passion for dance had been ignited there was no stopping him and with a prolific career in dance spanning over four decades, Len Goodman is now celebrated as one of the most respected and indeed nicest men in his field, something which our entertainment manager Rachel Baade certainly found when she was lucky enough to work with him last year. Rachel told us “Len Goodman is so charming and is very charismatic. Nothing is too much trouble when you work with him and he is a true professional and, just as importantly, a true gentleman”

The SWR Big Band is one of the most famous swing and jazz orchestras in the world. The band formed in 1946 under the name the SWF Symphony Orchestra, taking their name from the Südwestfunk which was the prevalent broadcasting company of the era. In 1998, the SDR (Süddeutscher Rundfunk) and SWF (Südwestfunk) broadcasting companies merged to form SWR (Südwestrundfunk), which the band takes their name from today. The SWR band has performed in concerts regularly throughout the world for over 60 years and today, the SWR Big Band is fortunate to have a repertoire that looks back over six decades of music that helped shape its history. Working with famous names form the Jazz World

‘‘

Len Goodman is so charming and is very charismatic. Nothing is too much trouble when you work with him and he is a true professional

’’

With a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in dance and a string of other accolades, achievements and awards to his name, Len now balances his UK and Stateside TV career with heading up The Goodman Dance Centre, a well respected studio in Kent, offering classes in all forms of, what is now his first love, dance.

We are delighted that Len Goodman will be joining us at Potters along with Strictly stars Ian Waite & Natalie Lowe and Darren Bennet & Lila Koplova for our Stars of Dance weekend on 29th June.

scene including Sammy Nestico, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Don Menza , Frank Foster, Rob McConnell, Bill Holman, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Bob Florence, Phil Woods and Bob Mintzer, their style remains unique and fluid, adapting to new forms of jazz and swing music. With a growing reputation as one of the very best big bands around, the SWR is always well received whenever they play and they have performed for some of the biggest crowds in the world!

With equal pedigree and described by the amazing Count Basie himself as “So good it should be banned!” the Syd Lawrence Orchestra was founded in 1967 by trumpeter and arranger Syd Lawrence. This fabulous band has been thrilling audiences in Concert Halls, Theatres, TV Shows and Music Festivals all over Great Britain and Continental Europe for over 40 years. Renowned for its exciting blend of high octane Big Band Swing and Classic Dance Music, the Orchestra’s repertoire ranges from the wartime million sellers of the legendary Glenn Miller through the era of the great Count Basie Orchestra to the hit songs of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.

Since Syd took a well-earned retirement in 1996, his protégé Chris Dean has stepped up to lead the orchestra. Chris believes in leading the Orchestra with pace and good humour, performing the classics of the swing era in a way that entertains the audience. “The music is what people want to hear” says Chris, “information, they can get in books. They come to a concert to be entertained, not to hear a lecture”. Chris’ aim has been to increase the number of young musicians playing Big Band Swing. Recent changes in personnel of the Orchestra have proved the worth of this ambition. The “new blood” of some of today’s finest young jazz musicians has brought a new fire and drive to the Orchestra’s performances; the result is a barrage of well earned rave reviews. The SWR band will perform at Potters Leisure Resort for the very first time during the Big Band Festival, which starts on Monday 11th June 2012. Then, on the Big Band Weekend with Syd Lawrence on Friday 15th June, The SWR band and the Syd Lawrence Orchestra will combine to form what is being billed as ‘The Greatest Big Band Show on Earth;’ two of the greatest Big Band orchestras coming together for one phenomenal performance – we certainly won’t be missing that unique show.

We would like you to tell us who you would like to see performing on our stage at the Atlas Theatre and why in no more than 30 words. Who’s New:

Here at Potters, we love to keep you up to date with all the latest news and events on resort. And, with our brand new ‘Who’s New’ section, you’ll be introduced to some of our newest team members and find out who works behind the scenes to make your stay at Potters unforgettable.

Lynda Gotts-White

Lynda Gotts-White... is Potters new Sales and Marketing Manager. Although tucked away in a busy Marketing Office, she’s certainly no shrinking violet. With over 15 years experience in the travel industry and the lead singer of a rock ‘n’ roll band, she knows how to make herself heard! From revamping the Aphrodite Website to developing new sales and service training and local advertising initiatives, she’s certainly hit the ground running and in the process, stirring things up with her creative and at times, kooky flair! While dashing to her next meeting and trying to touch up her vibrant lipstick en route, she tells me, “I absolutely love working here. My role is so varied and exciting. I have a great team and it feels like home already.”

Summer 2012

Kids Club

Having talked to lots of families and children who visit Potters we tasked Claire Randall, our Daytime Entertainments Manager, with revamping the whole of our Kids Club offering.

dall n a ir e R a l C

Claire started by listening to customer feedback before going on to look at what is needed to ensure that every child has a great holiday with us. Having reviewed all her findings she has created four great new kids clubs, all of which have been designed specifically to appeal to their individual age groups. With years of valuable experience, gained at resorts across the country to draw on she has created fun filled activities and adventures for children and teens. Claire told me “It felt like it was time for a change and while we have always been really proud of the activities that we offer, I am very excited about our new clubs because I know that families will be really pleased with what is on offer”

So, here’s all the details...

bouncing boos The “Bouncing Boos” is aimed at 0 – 2 year olds and is more of a facility than a club as it offers children a safe environment to play in and get to know other children of a similar age on the resort. There are lots of activities and games to keep our youngest guests amused. Claire Says ”It’s also great fun to do things together and with that in mind we will be offering daily parent and toddler sessions on the Potter’s Panda’s Play Bus throughout the holiday season too!”

bamboozles The “Bamboozles” Club is for 3 – 7 year olds and with activities such as Circus Day, Boo Mania and Boo’s Bug Hunt to name a few young children really will be spoilt for choice. There are action filled activities and arts and craft sessions on offer too so they will be sure to sleep well after their fun-filled day. Claire Says “We have so much on offer but do make sure you keep an eye out for Potters Panda Play Bus sessions too as these are sure to be great fun”

inbetweenees

Suzanne Bean

Suzanne Bean... has a passion for good food. And with 27 years experience as a chef working in fine dining restaurants and event catering, she certainly knows her bangers from her brûlées. Now a Restaurant Manager at Potters, this bubbly, salsa dancing fanatic, oversees the running of Potters Garden and Gallery Restaurant and The Black Rock Grill. “My role is so varied and fast paced; it certainly keeps me on my toes.” Never one to shy away from an audience, Suzanne is always happy to stop for a chat or to demonstrate her latest dance moves. She admits, ‘I love the buzz of the resort and meeting the guest. It’s my favourite part.’ So, keep your eyes peeled for this sizzling señorita during your stay and remember, she’ll never say no to a boogie on the dance floor.

Andrew Broom

Andrew Broom... is Potters new Site Services Manager. With over 25 years experience in the building industry and heading all day-to-day resort maintenance and building alterations, he’s certainly a handy man to have a round. With an inquisitive and problem solving approach to his work and living by the motto “get the job done”, this keen freshwater fisherman is certainly not scared to tackle new projects head on (pardon the pun). When asked what he most enjoys about his role, he smiled. “Every day is different and it always brings brand new challenges to the table. It’s a very rewarding role to be in.” And, with our brand new toilet facilities almost complete and lots of room upgrades going on throughout the resort, he’s certainly joined the team at an exciting and busy time!

The “Inbetweenees” are 8 – 11. With tons of activities such as Crazy Golf, Wii challenges, Pop Challenge and T-Shirt Making there really is something for everyone. Plus, this is a great place to meet and make new friends to hang out and have fun with. Claire Says ”Don’t forget to check out our full activities programme for lots of fun stuff to do. There really is always something to do at Potters”

t – club The T Club kids are 12 – 15+. We know just how important it is to keep this age group engaged and entertained and with this in mind we have created activities and programmes such as Media Hour, DJ Skills, Ultimate Challenge and Graffiti Art just for them. With sporting activities and more sedate fun such as quizzes in the mix too there will never be an opportunity to be bored! Claire Says ”Hang out with people you’re own age and join us on an activity programme which has been designed just with you in mind”

I

was very excited when I was told that I had been chosen to interview Potters very own celebrity Panda BamBoo because I had heard that he had led a very interesting life! Settling down in the Bowler’s Bar over a coffee (for me) and a bamboo shoot smoothie (for him) I could tell very quickly that we were going to get along as he really is a cheeky chappie and is great fun to hang out with. Boo started by telling me all about his days as a panda cub in New York City. “I was actually found in a box in China Town by my parents Mr and Mrs Cobbler, the shoe makers”, he told me. “My mummy and daddy said that even then I was very smiley and that as a little bear, I was always singing and dancing” That’s probably why Mr and Mrs Cobbler sent BamBoo to the New York School of Performing Arts, to learn all about what he loved to do best, entertain people. Bamboo told me, “I was the only panda there and it was a real struggle to get any leg warmers to fit my chubby panda legs. Some of the other students laughed at me, especially the hyenas. And, the monkeys used to shout ‘Boo’ when I walked past them in the corridor. It always made me jump!” I started to sympathise with Boo but he cheekily added “I must admit, I used to play lots of practical jokes too and was often told that I was a naughty little bear” At this point, Boo covered his mouth with his paw and giggled and I have to admit he has a very infectious panda laugh! “Anyway”, he added “the hyenas and the monkeys just made me more determined to be a really good entertainer and I promised myself

that when I grew up I would always be a good bear, I would be kind to everyone and I would always, always try to make people laugh” I told Boo that this was a great thing to aspire to and he told me “that’s why I came to Potters. I love it here as it is such good fun. And, there are always lots of children to play with in the summer.” “I think that Potters loves you too” I told him, “As they have named some great Kids Clubs after you!” Boo giggled again and remembering his comment about what makes him jump I promised that I, for one, would never shout “Boo!” when he walked past. “Oh no” he said “it’s fine now because although it still makes me jump, I know that people are only doing it because they like me” Yes Boo, they really do!
